The Diamond Princess isn't good example to look at how the virus spreads. How about the Glory or Valor sailings in March out of New Orleans. The virus was spreading rapidly in the city at the time and there was 1 death but no major outbreak traces to either ship.

One actually has to test people to determine infection rates. That is why the Diamond Princess is a good example. The Japanese tested everyone multiple times. And, follow-up testing was done as passengers returned home.

Except the outbreak wouldn't have been as bad if they didn't quarantine the passengers on the ship.  The other ships passengers didn't need multiple tests and then follow up testing because no one was sick.  The outbreaks mostly occurred when ships like the Diamond Princess were blocked from disembarking their passengers.  Ships operating normally had very few passengers that ended up getting sick.

There is simply no data to support this. Departing passengers were not tracked. Nor was any contact tracing done. For all you or I know the 2500 or so passengers off either of these ships may have resulted in ten or twenty thousand infections.

Contract tracing was done for every positive test so if it came from a cruise ship it would have been traced back and all the cruise ship passenger cases have been been widely circulated.

There is a article in the dallas morning news about cruising. I was surprised to read that carnival turned up the heat on their washers and dryers to sanitize germs. I hadnt seen this posted. Carnival must be discussing it's new plan with someone.

I read the article in the Miami Herald. A key recommendation was reduced capacity. If this is actually implemented it will fundamentally alter the cruise business. Since the costs to run the ship are largely the same no matter how many guests are on board, the key to profitability has always been to pack the ships to the brim.

 

If capacity is reduced, one of two results will occur: prices will rise sharply, or earnings (stock prices) will fall sharply. It's pretty simple. Actually both could happen.

 

Prices may be low at first to lure scared cruisers back but it likely won't last unless the capacity controls never materialize. In that case, packed ships with social distancing protocols would make for a pretty miserable cruise experience. Especially in bad weather lots of people would have to be confined to the cabin at times. Not an appealing thought.
