Rare rafinmd Posted August 17 #5126 Share Posted August 17 There's a bit of a story behind today's sunrise. In 2003 I attempted a totally overland circumnavigation of the globe, taking a freighter from Montreal to Europe, rail and ferry connections to Helsinki, the trans-Siberian to Beijing, Crystal Harmony to Vancouver via Dutch Harbor, and rail back home. Unfortunately, SARS got in the way and I had to fly home from Beijing, but I was still fascinated by Dutch Harbor. In 2007 I planned another trip, flying to Fairbanks, working my way down to Homer, and then the Ferry Tustemena from Homer to Dutch and back to Kodiak. On August 17, 2007 I left Fairbanks for Denali. ctjon Posted August 17 #5128 Share Posted August 17 While we are doing sunrises - this from the totally other end of the US - from the West Quoddy lighthouse in Lubec Maine. This is the most Eastern location in the US. It was at 5:30 am on Thursday Aug 15. Not seeming to some but this city in Maine is also the closest US city to Africa because it sticks out so far east.

Roy, when that Grand Panama Canal cruise was first put online (November 2015 based on drib's database), it was V8218, and then it changed to OCS180 That photo was taken by the Crystal Computer Lab Guy (CCLG) using someone's phone/camera from the group. drib only orchestrated the event from home using the live view from the Crystal web site. Below is the best of the ones he captured, and you can see CCLG on the far right. If you zoom in, you can see the phone and various other accoutrements in a pink case! I have several other images from this sequence that I may post later depending on ... well, you know. I noticed that the live views are back! I definitely understand why the Computer Lab view is not one of them. Many of the ones I captured in the course of this cruise - including Crystal Bach and Mahler and Esprit - when was the last time anyone has mentioned Esprit! - are still in my archives, and maybe I'll post a few of those too. Regards, Auf-d in Peace Actually, I like the photo from Roy’s post of June of 2023, better. It must’ve come directly from that pink-cased phone. The only trouble is that Terry is in the shadow. I do agree it’s great to see CCLG in this one, direct from the now-only-history web cam in the computer room. This has been fun, @Auf-d in Peace! Thx!

KenzSailing Posted August 19 #5134 Share Posted August 19 There's a famous passage in Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises" where a character is asked how he went bankrupt: "Two ways, gradually, then suddenly." I'm starting to feel that way about the condition of my various bodily joints.

Rare May B Posted August 21 #5138 Share Posted August 21 What a great and diverse group of photos! Thanks for the memories! I never thought of the Dalmatian coast as having anything to do with the breed of dog. Further research tells me, that’s where the breed of dog originated. Ok, I’ve learned my new thing today. Pretty great, considering it’s only 6 am.
