OnTheJourney Posted September 11, 2020 #1 Share Posted September 11, 2020 (edited) Can't do it on a ship right now, so let's try it here. Think of a song with sailing / cruising-related lyrics and post them. Then we guess the title. Googling=cheating!! I came across this (GREAT) song last night and it thoroughly took me away to a different place. Partial lyrics (can't list them all since it would quickly reveal the title): Got out of town on a boat for the Southern IslandsSailing to reach before a following seaShe was makin' for the Trades on the outsideAnd the downhill run to Papeete Off the wind on this heading lie the MarquesasWe got eighty feet of waterline, nicely making wayIn a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call youBut on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away...... 🤔 First person to identify the title gets to explain what all the nautical stuff refers to....lol Edited September 11, 2020 by OnTheJourney

Making for the trades is heading to an area of the ocean where the normal seasonal wind direction allows for easy sailing i.e. the wind is going in the direction in which you want to sail. Downhill run is sailing with the wind on the stern of the boat. Of the wind on this heading means if a helmsman steers the boat further away from the direction in which the wind is blowing, she will reach point to another destination i.e. the Marquesas. Eighty feet of waterline refers to the length of the hull of the boat that sits in the water. Nicely making way refers to a good sail. The boat is speedily and efficiently progressing to intended destination. Midnight watch is the darkest time of night and includes the midnight hour such as the 11 pm to 2 am watch. Watch is when a specific crew member is responsible for the operation of the boat and maintenance of a specific course. There you are...
