In the late '70s on a transatlantic on QE2 I met Rod. In the gym on QE2 of all places. He was there with two bodyguards (today they would be called personal assistants). Rod chatted with all us passengers while his bodyguards worked out. Very friendly and approachable unlike current celebs. Wow! Cool story.... No not called “Sail Away” Not even in the title. It was popular enough that I would think most CC’ers have heard it, and perhaps even sung along with the chorus, like me until today, not knowing the song title. I was stumped on the title, but can hear the chorus in my mind. The artist goes by a single name, and the title is hidden in the lyrics.

Great music trivia question, since so many know the tune but not the title. Hoping its a trivia question on a not too far in the future Viking cruise, or a tune playing when we sail out of a distant port.

We can at least listen to our favorite "sea songs". If we were to use song titles to describe the state of cruising I think I would start with: "I can't get no (Satisfaction)". 😱🍸 LOL! Listening to all the suggestions for cruising out of Florida while ignoring the Covid 19 problem, I would go with the title "Fools Rush In."

OnTheJourney Posted September 18, 2020 Author #92 Share Posted September 18, 2020 (edited) Wow...indeed a terrific song. We visited the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum during a road trip around the Upper Peninsula in MI. They have the bell from the Fitzgerald on display. Here's what I suspect is a relatively unknown one...If you know the ship it refers to, that's also the title. October was looming The fish it was scarce They just weren’t there for some reason “We’ll gather the crew,” Skip Billy Tyne said, “And we’ll make one last trip for the season.” Edited September 18, 2020 by OnTheJourney

I have a vivid memory of the 1980 race, which featured one of the most intense electrical storms I had ever experienced. Gord's 45 foot wooden sloop, the Golden Goose, was hit by lightning, lost all radio and electronics and forced him to withdraw. His yacht was gorgeous, a pleasure to see 🥌

Rare aungrl Posted September 18, 2020 #96 Share Posted September 18, 2020 Okay, here's a pretty obscure one, but something tells me this group might know it! Pretty lady, look at me, I'm a sailor from the sea. I can take you anywhere, You can join me if you dare. And she said: "Sailor, come with me. Is it lonesome on the sea?" (Humming because I can't remember the next two lines!) Love is harder than a diamond And as soft and pure as gold. And as sweet as any secret Any sailor ever told.
