There are known dangers with all these occupations. Yet the employers do have a duty to protect employees from unnecessary risk. Some of this is enshrined in legislation, some in common law. Even the military is big on workplace safety, especially on the battlefield. Or are you suggesting that construction and mining companies can simply ignore work site safety practices?

This discussion reminds me of the indoor business smoking laws my state passed. Don't get me wrong, I actually prefer being able to walk into bars and they aren't stinky and full of smoke. However, I would also love the option of being able to go to a nice cigar bar and enjoy a bourbon with it. Options are nice vs living in a world of outlawed activities. I believe there is a huge different between giving those choices and having safety practices.

These laws were designed largely to protect the employee. This is just one of many arguments of who gets to decide for others in the name of "safety". No one is forcing anyone to work at say a cigar bar if they don't want to. That doesn't mean any and all safety should be thrown out of the window. I would be all for certain regulations, such as venting requirements. I also can go to many casinos who seem to handle it just fine. Special exemptions for big money when suddenly, safety takes the back seat.
