UK coastal waters cruise travel insurance

Cover for cruises in UK waters for UK people. This is a minefield once you get into the policy wording. Many cover medical treatment abroad but specifically exclude treatment and repatriation in UK, you have to read the small print in the actual policy not the headlines.  They assume UK means on land and don’t necessarily cover travellers needs in UK waters. 

Cover for You have updated their information for UK only cruises. First company I have seen who have done this.

This is not a recommendation merely pointing out the detail you need to clarify with your own insurers.

I’ve discovered this too.. whilst my annual policy advised there would be cover for Covid-19 under the Emergency Medical Expenses and Repatriation section of the policy only up to £10m.  This means that if you contract Coronavirus abroad you would be covered for medical expenses and repatriation only. 

Define “abroad” 🤷‍♀️?  Assuming the ships will go into international waters to allow shops  and casinos to open; is that “abroad”!!?!

 

This is giving me a headache!!

My cover was through a NatWest bank account. They told me in a phone call all UK treatment would be covered by NHS so no medical cover. They couldn’t grasp the concept of a ship at sea in UK waters

The Post Office insurance isn't any good either for the same reasons as above - and more.

 

To be fair, not something I normally say, it's early days for the insurance industry to get its collective act together to produce a policy for a completely new product.

I presume for the coastal cruises with UK only passengers if there's a covid emergency or any other emergency  they would put into a UK port. You would then be entitled to NHS treatment. They must of had talks with UK govt officials and need to be clearer as to what the policy is.  My annual insurance is through my  Nationwide account, I know they've made changes due covid but I haven't checked out the fine details as probably sticking to UK only holidays this year.

I have this from Staysure. Whilst there is cover, the limits (my BOLD) render it close to useless IMHO.

 

The persons named on the Staysure Validation Certificate for the abovementioned policy shall be covered up to the limits shown in the table of benefits within the policy wording document for pre-authorised Emergency Medical and Repatriation Expenses incurred on a ?Staycation? cruise solely around the British Isles.

This cover is subject to the normal terms, conditions and exclusions shown in the policy wording document and only applies where ?Cruise Cover? is shown on the Validation Certificate. The cruise must start and end during the period of cover shown on the Validation Certificate.

All Emergency medical and repatriation costs likely to exceed £350 must be pre-authorised by calling the 24hour Medical Emergency helpline shown on your policy documents. Any costs exceeding £350 not pre-authorised may not be covered by this policy.

Pre authorisation of larger sums tends to be common. Again the actual policy wording is key. There maybe times in an emergency when pre authorisation may not be possible (heart attack) as immediate treatment is needed.
