Picture-A-Week 2021 - Week 38

 Share

Recommended Posts

Pictures taken between Monday, September 13 and Sunday, September 19.

Fall is nearly here. Get out and take more pictures. Share!

Rules: See above

That's it. This isn't a contest.

All photos taken this week are welcome (not just cruising).

Prizes will not be awarded. Discovering the joy of photography is the prize.

The idea is to get folks out using their cameras for more than vacations and toddler birthdays.

Post one. Post many. Up to you.

Have fun with your camera and share your fun with others!

7:00 AM Saturday morning saw young Jackie at her first "away" competition at the 42nd Annual Pasadena Open Championships in Pasadena, CA. Sort of a big deal for a five-year-old but her coach thought that she was ready to compete outside of her home base. She had apparently done well in the compulsories (technical skills) the day before, but the WiFi was down at the rink and her placement was unknown. She took to the ice early Saturday and her routine was smooth and wobble free. The judges thought so too since she ended up with yet another first place finish. Gold medalists have adopted the old tradition of biting gold to test its purity and Jackie followed suit. Her win was 100% pure gold but the cool-looking medal was significantly less so.

Gold-ish...

Dave

What level was she competing at? One of the basics or has she started testing pre-pre yet? Can she do a triple axel yet? 😁

Yeah, I miss skating and can't wait to start back this week.

Got out this Saturday to the local wetlands - hot as usual.  I decided to bring the slightly lighter and smaller 100-400mm lens rather than the monster 200-600mm lens - and because this lens focuses closer and because it's easier to swing around for in-flight shots, I decided to concentrate on more bugs this session, not just birds...especially the fun challenge of capturing closeups of dragonflies in flight:

A glossy ibis, showing how the iridescent brown feathers show other colors in sunlight, giving them their name:

Tiny little bird - almost hummingbird sized - the blue-grey gnatcatcher:

Large wading birds generally don't put their bodies in the water - taking advantage of their long legs to stay above the surface - other than quick dunks to bathe.  This little blue heron apparently decided the heat was a bit much, and dropped down into the water up to its neck - and stayed there for a good 5 minutes just enjoying the cool soak:

A green heron stalking its way across a low branch over the water, repositioning for a new fishing spot:

The paper wasps are back - busy building their thick paper-like nests on all the pond apple trees over the water, laying their eggs and sealing things up.  Best not to disturb them much, as their stings HURT:
