anadi Posted February 18, 2006 #1 Share Posted February 18, 2006 Any tips for the barbeque on Cococay? Are there lines? Is it better to get there right when it starts, or wait a bit? Is there plenty of seating to eat? How about the fly situation? We are going mid-April. Thanks
QTBabyNurse Posted February 18, 2006 #2 Share Posted February 18, 2006 Personally, I always like to get to the BBQ when it first opens, because I get a little uncertain about food that sits out for awhile. The food at CocCo Cay's BBQ is VERY good....and is kept on ice (in regards to the salads).....I never saw many flies around the island. ENJOY~wish I was going too! Inshape Posted February 19, 2006 #3 Share Posted February 19, 2006 We were on MOS 1/22/06 and we were at Coco CAy the next day. We waited for no lines. The fruit was fine and so was the salads. The burgers were overcooked and not worth eating. The corn tased like frozen pieces. The chicken... just did not appeal to me either. Now the ribs were wonderful! cb at sea Posted February 19, 2006 #4 Share Posted February 19, 2006 It's a day at the beach! One of my most favorite parts of the whole cruise. Come and go at will. There's plenty of everything for everybody!
Silvery Seas Cruiser Posted February 19, 2006 #5 Share Posted February 19, 2006 There were no flies but there were lots of hens running around the tables and scratching in the sand. They looked very healthy, in fact far better than the vagabond chickens of Key West. I did see a few signs asking guests not to feed the birds, but folks were giving them food scraps anyway. I really liked the bar-b-que food. The writer above must have been there on a bad day. My husband was hungry so we were among the first in line, but there was plenty of food for a long time. I think around two or two thirty, staff began to close down the cooked food lines, but had some cookies and brownies longer.
kyriecat Posted February 19, 2006 #6 Share Posted February 19, 2006 I don't know if I'd call the chickens healthy. We saw two of them drinking from a glass of beer that a man had left next to his lounge chair. I've heard of marinating chickens in beer, but I don't know about marinating them before they are even dead.
PappaSiera Posted February 19, 2006 #7 Share Posted February 19, 2006 Personaly, I've always found the BBQ's at Coco Cay and Labadee overrated. All the food is the pretty much the same burgers, hotdogs, and chicken sandwiches as what is offered everyday for lunch in the Windjammer. The ribs are good, but not great. Of course, food is a very personal and subjective thing, and this is just MOHO
Rala Posted February 19, 2006 #8 Share Posted February 19, 2006 We found no lines for the BBQ. There is more than one "station" for all of the offerings which I thought were pretty good. The ribs,in particular, were very tasty. An enjoyable experience all around.
burritopunk Posted February 19, 2006 #9 Share Posted February 19, 2006 I left my plate of food on a table to get a drink, and on my way back, i saw about 10 birds demolishing my plate. I made a 180 and went the opposite direction, haha.
anadi Posted February 19, 2006 Author #10 Share Posted February 19, 2006 Thanks everyone! We want to go to the far side of the island, where I hear it is less crowded. My parents won't want to walk that far, so maybe we can meet them to eat. My mom can't be in the sun much. Is there a covered area to eat lunch in, or umbrellas or something shading the tables? Thanks.
Rala Posted February 19, 2006 #11 Share Posted February 19, 2006 Yes, there are shady areas near the buffet and also right on the beach if you don't want to leave your "spot".
Merion_Mom Posted February 19, 2006 #12 Share Posted February 19, 2006 Yes, the picnic style tables are all under cover. Many of the hammocks are in full shade; others in partial shade. They will be fine.
blueridgecruiser Posted February 20, 2006 #13 Share Posted February 20, 2006 Last time at Coco, I wished the ship dropped me off there the first day and picked me up on the last day. Food was passable, the ambiance, incredible.
cruisin granny Posted February 20, 2006 #14 Share Posted February 20, 2006 WE were just there Thursday and went back to the ship before lunch. It was very cloudy and windy at CocoCay. We heard that the ship was in the sun so we headed back to get some rays. We discovered that lunch is not served at the Windjammer that day, only at one dining room. mikenellenh Posted February 21, 2006 #15 Share Posted February 21, 2006 We liked the BBQ on Coco Cay, just did not like the rude older people who shoved their way through the line... this happened throughout the cruise in Windjammer also... I loved Coc Cay and took a bunch of pics looking out at Grandeur when we were there last May...
