Need info on any Halloween decorations or happenings, please!!!

It appears that the powers that be were following along - or we were just a bit early!  Sometime between our last Fortune Teller visit and today, they installed a gorgeous Halloween photo op across the walkway.  I'm not really photo people, but I snapped a pic for you - waiting for the families to get done, because taking pictures of people your don't know is super creepy even when you're trying for the scenery =p

Hey we are looking at doing a quick 7 day on Nov. 6th. What is the current ship pax capacity. Are they sailing full?

We heard 65% on day one, and 73% yesterday.  Both were from unverifiable and possibly unreliable sources.  If either is accurate, I anticipate difficulties when sailing is completely full.  We had no issues with food related services, but my poolgoing friends said they were often 'full' with little lounger space available.  The 'upscale' bars were often full, though there was usually nearby seating available after you'd ordered.  We never felt crowded, thankfully, bit I suspect it will be a different story when maxxed out.  For Carnival's sale, I hope I'm wrong!

Just found this in an article published on Cruise Hive yesterday:

"In the first three months, the cruise line has completed 98 sailings with a total of 237,000 guests with ships at only 70% capacity and with protocols in place."

Capacity info is hard to find it seems.

Are reservations required for Cucina?

From what I have read on these forums, if you have YTD you can use the Hub app to check in for dinner like you would the MDR. I've read that if you don't have YTD, you can go after 8:30. @Virga please confirm I got that right 😁

We all had YTD, so yes, we just requested they make a table available whenever we felt like going - we went THREE TIMES.  One of those nights, we had some apps in the MDR early, and ate at Cucina late.

Unfortunately, we didn't have anyone in our group with set dining, so I'm not sure how that's implemented.  The longest we ever waited for a table was about five minutes - very impressed.

We are en route home now - I'll be trying to finish up the last of our 'hey, want to hear what I did every day on my vacation?' posts first.  I'm already working on my overall impression posts in the back of my mind, but determined to finish up the blow by blow first.  Not too much left to tell!

Looking forward to your final posts. Have a safe trip home and thanks for sharing your experiences. I would be interested to hear about any info/rumors about breakthrough cases. Any talk of that or info given during your cruise? I haven't seen any news reports regarding this, only have seen a vlogger post that they had a breakthrough case themselves while on board in August. Also, the Magic was impacted by breakthrough cases within the crew sometime. Don't hear much about this anywhere.

I just found this and didn't know of this resource. I hope Mardi Gras goes back towards Green and not towards red 😕 Screenshot_20211009-123447_Chrome.thumb.jpg.ff8bd321aade3ce2bda508b14385ff71.jpgScreenshot_20211009-123447_Chrome.thumb.jpg.ff8bd321aade3ce2bda508b14385ff71.jpgScreenshot_20211009-123544_Chrome.thumb.jpg.c860c672a19a4d3e67aec0010c668968.jpg

We 'made friends' with several staff members, and we got to chat about little bits of ship gossip.  Covid hits were not something we asked about, and it was not something any of them brought up proactively.  We did discuss precautions in general, and they confirmed that the cruise line itself cares about keeping cases very very low - the CDC might not think the current level is worth investigating, but Carnival does.  The staff is committed to not all having to go back home again.

That resource you found is pretty nifty, isn't it?  I wish very much that the CDC would be transparent about the thresholds they're using, but I have to content myself with knowing that they're likely pretty cautious.  I also HATE that their levels go green-orange-yellow-red, but regardless, it is nice to know that MG is still showing low enough cases that the CDC doesn't think it's worth investigating at this point.  Some positives are 100% expected - while the vaccines still offer excellent protection against infection (and even better protection against serious cases) they aren't as good as the 95% we were seeing with Alpha immediately post-vax.  10% isn't zero, unfortunately.  Thanks to that, and especially for the unvaccinated kids,  negative one Thursday does not necessarily mean negative the following Thursday.  But as long as they aren't seeing significant spread onboard, I'd argue we had lower chances of infection onboard than we'd have seen having a few meals out in Florida.  In any event, my only personal concern is my possibilty of infecting others, and I can sharply limit that risk with regular testing.

Our last day is something of a blur - we'd had yet another late night (culminating in a wee-hours pizza with a gorgeous pile of prosciutto on top!) And only woke just in time to get cleaned up for the mixology 'class' at Alchemy.

I'm fairly sure this works similarly to the speakeasy, though it is not a free event.  I'd been hoping to learn a few 'unconventional' flavor combinations to impress my friends, but it was more of a 'basic bartending skills' thing, where they walk you through not looking like an idiot while making a few common drinks.  We used to own a pub, and spent many years in the bar world, so for us it just turned into a lunch hour of heavy drinking.  Still a great time!  Love my Alchemy boys - Nathan and Nikola (Nikola with the good hair) were always wonderful.  I neglected to find out what they'd done for my absolute favorite drink - a variation on a penicillin - and I'll likely have a lot of fun playing with that trying to figure it out.

Immediately after the obscene amount of lunchtime booze, many of our classmates left to take a nap, and we went to ride the roller coaster.  It was great!!  You do indeed get two loops around, and we loved every second.  That first rise is unexpected!  Hubs got to go again to accompany a friend, and she's significantly lighter than me so they got an even faster speed - now that's a motivational weight loss goal!

We were supposed to go back to pack at this point, but some of the group went to try the obstacle course and I went to Brass Magnolia to visit with Atilla and Nicola (Nikola with less hair) and cool down.  They made me a perfect penicillin, and I don't think I told them that I preferred the unknown variation from Alchemy.  They seem to have a good-natured 'competition' going between the craft cocktail bars.

After they were done sweating it out on the obstacle course, we regrouped at Tides bar.  Unfortunately, once again, there was NO airflow back there, and even the frozen drinks doesn't really make the sweating any better.  We bid goodbye to our favorite bartender there (Adnon with the no fan, lol!) and retreated to the room to clean up for supper

Two of our group had booked the steakhouse for tonight, and nothing I could say could convince them to try Rudy's instead to try it out for me.  The four of us remaining ended up at Cucina again, though I did stop in at the brewhouse to try the short ribs we'd been looking forward to all week.  They were good, but Cucina's were better.  Man, I hope this is what all the Cucinas are like - I see the menu is quite different elsewhere.  Totally worth an upcharge, imo!

After dinner we continued the goodbye rounds at Fortune Teller, the club, the Italian coffee bar, and found ourselves (of course) back at the Brass Magnolia.  I need this bar in my life back home!  On second thought, no, I most definitely do not 😉

Having started early, we convinced ourselves to retire at midnight when the craft bars closed up, and got mostly packed.

Morning packing and debarkation was a breeze - we left the room at 830a, met our carpool friends, and were in the car before 9a.  I was thrilled we'd managed to time it so well, after the long embarkation lines.  We looked for the standby desk they'd told us might be able to rebook us for the following cruise, but didn't see it - and we were already on our way when corporate opened, so we decided not to piss off all our coworkers by being gone an extra unplanned week.

Home now with the kitty (bonus pic attached - he's purring, I swear, though the reproachful glare makes it clear he has not yet forgiven me) and missing our carefree life on the ship.  If we could bring the darn cat, I think we'd just plan to live onboard forever!

Final overall thoughts still to come!

Where is the speakeasy located on the ship?  We were on the same sailing, but didn't come across it - but planning to sail MG again later this year or early next.

It was in one of the other bar venues - it's not a standalone location, just a themed party one night.  They held it on the second night of our sailing, so you'll want to make friends with the staff at one of the craft cocktail bars immediately to 'earn' yourself an invite.

Cruise Critic keeps eating the posts I begin, and I keep being dull and forgetting to copy them elsewhere.  Sitting down to submit our surveys now, so I think maybe I'll actually get something submitted this time!

This first post is going to sound very negative - I'm flitting through the 'could be better' bits first.  Do not take these to mean that we had any true complaints about the cruise!  We had a fantastic time, none of these potential areas for improvement were enough to ruin our fun at any point.

Number one complaint: terribly limited late night food options.  After 10p, the only complimentary food available is pizza.  You can still get sushi for another hour, at least, and I guess there's room service overnight, but it felt strange to be overloaded with food options all day and then be so limited at night.  Even the small ships at least offer some simple offerings at the buffet late night!  We did enjoy our nightly pizza trek, but would have much appreciated even a couple nights of additional options.

Related to this is the time the craft cocktail bars close - I wish they'd keep a single one open, perhaps rotating, a bit later.  It felt like the only indoor bars late night were the club and casino - perhaps by design, but neither of those are our favored late night scene.

Other complaints, in no particular order:

In the new puzzle piece design, the entry hallway to the room is awfully narrow, and the doors have foam stoppers in the mechanism so they don't even open fully.  When you're carrying back a tray, it's a quite a tight squeeze and requires a bit of juggling.  It seems like a simple fix to allow the doors to open a bit wider, so I imagine that'll be done fairly quickly, but I can see it still being an issue for someone unsteady on their feet.

Relatedly, I noticed someone going up the hallway in a wide Carnival labeled wheelchair, and watched as she and her companion came up to a steward cart - there was no way for her to wheel past it. She had to get up and walk forward while her companion compressed the chair and moved it past the cart.  I'm sure there are likely wider halls for accessible rooms, but it struck me as odd that Carnival would issue the very wide chairs when they can't fit down the halls.  We almost always passed one or more steward carts, so I'm sure they experienced this frequently.  I have noticed that newer ships have made more accessible cabins available, so hopefully most in this situation are able to book those without trouble.

I fear the piano bar is going to be too small on a fully booked sailing - it was awfully busy on our lightly booked sailing!  They also didn't seem to staff that bar adequately, though the bartendress was excellent and somehow made sure we were never left dry.

Whyyyy are there floaters in the beverage station water?  We got large format waters in restaurants, but it put me off drinking as much water as I should.  A fine mesh filter is all it takes, guys!

Slight issue with Bolt - apparently, high winds shut it down semi-regularly.  Had we known this, we would have booked for a port day.  It would be a simple thing to warn people about.  As a related aside, when we were cancelled, we were told by the representative at the bottom of the stairs that we'd have to go up the stairs to get our refund.  My husband tweaked his knee early on the cruise, and wore a brace for the remainder.  Stairs weren't impossible - and well worth it to actually ride Bolt - but expecting him to climb the stairs to get his refund felt silly.  Why not just refund everyone in a cancelled time slot, were they hoping to charge no-shows even after the wind shut them down?  Or at least, given his particular situation, why not allow me to take his card up to cancel for him?  I imagine we could/should have pushed for this, but he's the sort that doesn't make a fuss and he didn't end up any worse for the wear so I don't know that we'll even mention it in the survey.

The airflow at Tides Bar on the aft end of the ship was about nil even when the ship was in motion - I have no idea how the staff there could tolerate it!  They were uniformly excellent at this venue, but no amount of frozen drinks could keep us there dripping sweat the way we were.  All it will take to fix this is a good fan, so I'm hopeful that will get handled fairly soon.  Adnon and his colleagues deserve better!

As I mentioned early on, embarkation was a mess.  I assume as they get more sailings under their belts, they'll be able to manage this better, but it was ugly for elites who haven't experienced that in many years.  Having seen it, I don't think I buy that killing off elite boarding is a covid-necessitated change.

I'll always continue to complain about the lack of low/no sugar mixers onboard.  They do such a fabulous job catering to us sugar-averse folks where dining is concerned, I'll never understand why they don't have at least ONE islandy sugar free option.  I'm fortunate to 'choose' to avoid sugar, but many really don't have a choice for health reasons - they/we should be able to order something with an umbrella too!

Some minor supply chain issues that I believe were likely out of Carnival's hands - no oysters??  And out of redbull at many bars after day 3?  No bacon available for my grilled cheese at the deli? I do understand these, of course, but I can't wait for things to get back to normal!!

Another on the list of small-potatoes complaints: why were ALL the Lock-It-Link machines in the no smoking sections of the casino?  Who knows how much money they lost sending me over to the video poker machines when I wanted some indoor nicotine?

And my last quibble: when we decided at 10p the night before we got home that we wanted to stay aboard, they should be able to at least give us some real pointers on how to accomplish this.  We were told we'd have to wait until 9a when corporate opened, or look for the 'standby' desk at the port when debarking.  We didn't see that desk, and we were well on our way home by 9a - but they'd have had two more cabins booked the following week if they'd been able to take our money.  I know there are likely governmental reasons why that isn't doable, but I'd have appreciated being told that instead of kicking the can down the road.

Man, I really had to dig for these.  We are easygoing, so it takes a lot for us to actually lodge a complaint, but we aren't not blind to service and systems failures even though we rarely actually complain.  The fact that these I noticed were so minor overall speaks VERY well of the staff and procedures on this very green ship.

I'll put together the last post this evening, assuming CC doesn't eat this one now!

Thanks for the great details! Trays are back??? I thought Carnival had gotten rid of these quite some time ago. I had to hoard my room service tray and use that previously.

Sadly, they are still not stacked beside the buffet for passengers to use when serving - or at least, I didn't notice them.   There WERE small stacks of the large trays - always seemingly clean - more often than not at at the coffee / condiment stands.  I'm fairly sure they're meant for busser staff to be able to quickly clear several tables, but the staff member I asked cheerfully allowed me to take one when I ended up with more food than I could bring back to the room easily.

There was also a slightly smaller tray in the room, where they put the ice bucket and empty glassware.  I miss them being the norm as well!  Especially now, I'm fond of bringing meals back to the room.

I can't fathom why they stopped using them the way they used to - and it does seem like now would be the right time to bring them back.  We encountered plenty of people bringing meals back to their stateroom, I don't think we're a small niche!

We aren't, lots of people thought they were so functional. It's a money saver for the line. They don't have to buy them, wash them, less to deal with. Also, you can carry back less, so less eaten or wasted. That's my guess.

This was by FAR my biggest complaint also.  "We should go to Piazza Panini to grab a sandwich before 10 pm to bring back to the room since everything but pizza closes" should NEVER be uttered on Carnival's flagship.

My friends mentioned this as a quibble and I forgot to mention it in my review.  We were shocked to find that the Tides Bar (Lido deck aft) closed at 9 or 10 pm, when in the past it was always open until midnight on other ships.

Then again, as hot and airless as it was back there, it might be a mercy for the bartenders.  😮

We noticed a lot of scooters parked in hallways, so apparently the issue with the room doors not opening up completely is a serious one.

I was diagnosed with diabetes (up from "prediabetes") not long before our sailing.  I messaged John Heald asking about sugar-free or reduced-sugar daiquiri mixes and he responded saying he was a diabetic also and that He Would Do Something About It and He Would Take Care Of Me.

Naturally, he did NOT.

Maybe future generations of Carnival cruisers will get to reap the sugar-free bounty of our concerns...but I doubt it.

People with set-time dining can start making reservations for those restaurants at 7:30.

People with YTD can begin making reservations for them at 5:30, when they first open.

We noticed that the system does not allow YTD folks to make a reservation at, say, Cucina, and then a second reservation in the MDR on the same night.  😐

No robes for us lowly Ruby Plus (okay not a thing - we are just standard red cards but a gal can dream).

I just can't get over the bar options that are available here.  Even at bars we don't go to several times a day, the bartenders all remember us.  At the few we've been frequenting over and over, they have been PHENOMENAL.  Like, how on earth does my Alchemy bartender remember which drinks I haven't tried yet?  I don't even totally remember which ones I haven't tried yet!

This phenomenon is partly due to the service quality of the bartenders, but I submit it says more about your general awesomeness.  In spite of my current phase of my life where I have a good management desk jockey sort of job in the corporate world, I did spend the obligatory years as a server in my younger days at various venues (a country club, a small-town mom and pop basic restaurant, Medieval Times) and it is truly a pleasure to serve kind people.

They stand out as memorable as much as the troublemakers.  If you are friendly and enjoy what you are being served (and I bet you didn't whine while drinking something with the loathesome anise / licorice flavor - you knocked it right back anyway with a smile and a demeanor of gratitude, didn't you?), you are handing de facto compliments to these folks on a job well done. A bartender's job is to make a drinker happy and obviously your demeanor is reinforcing and encouraging their daily mission.  It doesn't matter if you are a heavy drinker or a light one, a frequent visitor or occasional.  What stands out is pretty simply, are you a nice guest or a jerk? You mention you are adding grats on top of your package and that added to your attitude makes you a dream customer. And also, workers talk to each other about guests, and human nature is pretty simple everywhere. The whole sugar and vinegar equation, if you will. Karma. You reap what you sow. Well done, Virga. Nice review, nice person.
