Bay of Islands question

On Majestic princess arriving Bay of Islands Jan 30th 2023. I note that cruise mapper schedule shows arrival near Russel. Does the tender dock at Russel or close to it?. Any info is appreciated.

I believe it is at Waitangi Wharf. You can catch a ferry to Russell from there.

I think you have to go to the main wharf at Paihia to get the ferry to Russell unless they've started running special ones from Waitangi when cruise ships are in port. Anyway there are shuttle buses that run from the tender wharf to Paihia, it's only five minutes or so by bus.

Actually I think it tenders to the Paihia Dock.

Or a cruise ship did when we stayed in Paihia a few years back.

That would surprise me a little as the Paihia wharf used to be very busy unless they've extended it somehow since I was last there. In some ways it would be more sensible as the tourist info office is there.

Used to be Paihia some time back, but they did change to Waitangi. It is still possible that some ships still choose to use Paihia.

PS: I believe the move was for the extra space available for staging the tours.

Yes, loose description by me. You do need to get the ferry from Paihia. Also, it is a bit of a walk, but quite a nice one if the weather is kind.

You could be right, but see photo below taken 2015, of the ship and tender heading in.

Photo is taken from the south end of Paihia, the dock was to the left of the photo about 1km. it seems to me that is where the tenders heading.

Waitangi is about 10km further around the coast, and had a smaller dock.

But it could of curved around toward Waitangi after the photo was taken.

So you could probably be right, sorry about that.

Ahh that could be the case, yes there was stacks of carpark around there.

Paihia and Waitangi wharves are not much more than a km apart.

I’ve never tendered at Pahia and always been Waitangi

It is a fantastic walk from Pahia to the wharf, or vica versa, about 20-30 mins depending on fitness and curiosity. The path has a bit of interest just by itself, along with the scenery, beach, long house, bridge, Lagoon, etc.

They often have the market stalls set up in Pahia, on cruise days as well.
