Kiwi_cruiser Posted August 17, 2022 #1 Share Posted August 17, 2022 It has been about 8 years since we last cruise to Bali. We are looking for some new ideas on things to do in Bali. Would you recommend doing here for the day?

Mrs f. Posted August 23, 2022 #3 Share Posted August 23, 2022 I want to go to the sacred monkey sanctuary and the rice fields and some temples. And maybe a waterfall. Also have a typical Bali meal. Not sure what we will be able to fit in. We have 2 partial days.

Two part-days makes it a bit more difficult, depending where your ship docks (can you name the port?) and where you want to visit. The Balinese are known for their spirituality and expertise at arts & crafts. The district of Ubud has close-knit communities that each specialise - little workshops for woodwork here, for stonecraft there, another for metalwork, painting, fabrics, etc etc. Not far from Ubud, the Monkey Sanctuary is great - unless things have changed, both you & the residents can wander at will. And just round the corner is a long row of shops & stalls that sell Balinese arts & crafts. Those places are close together, but whether you can fit them into a partial day depends on your port & the hours available. Temples everywhere, every home has one - anything from a large & ornate building in the garden to a little shrine in a corner of the living room. Drivers know where to take you. You (both sexes) need to cover shoulders and legs, bigger temples will loan you a shawl for a donation. Years back we had a wonderful buffet lunch in a great roadside restaurant with fruit-bats hanging upside-down near the door ( we fed them, supervised & with long tongs) and an open elevated view over rice-paddies way down in the valley below. I tried - and failed - to figure its location for our last visit to Bali, we ended up with a very poor buffet lunch in a main road restaurant used by coaches. They were some distance to the north, near Mt Batu - probably too far for a partial day. Since your ship will be in port overnight I highly recommend the indigenous sunset show overlooking the ocean in the grounds of Uluwatu Temple. We'd given ourselves insufficient time to look round the Temple, do some research to see if that's worthwhile. Experienced local drivers will know the routine We love Bali, tho the southern peninsula (Denpasar area) is very crowded now. It's a predominantly Hindu island in a predominantly Muslim country. Mrs f. Posted August 24, 2022 #5 Share Posted August 24, 2022 I know the 2 partial days are challenging. We get into port (Benoa) at 1pm and leave at 5pm next day. Our guide, Dewa, is highly rated.....we are emailing back and forth about ideas. That first buffet sounds great....too bad you don't remember name. I take pictures of names so I can remember where I've been. Thank goodness for the cell phone camera.

Dammit, Mrs f. - you've shamed me into digging again 😊 And I found it 👍 https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g608495-d8368896-r416631528-Warung_Ume_Anyar-Sidemen_Karangasem_Bali.html and after a bit more digging I even found a photo of the bat https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g608484-d1201536-r159201242-Lereng_Agung-Karangasem_Bali.html#photos;aggregationId=101&albumid=101&filter=7&ff=251240850 But the place is about an hour from Denpasar, where your ship will probably berth JB 🙂 Edited August 24, 2022 by John Bull
