Mississippi River to Mexico on the Carnival Valor - MistyRo76's Review of the 10/22/22 Sailing

It was about 10AM when we headed off the ship. As usual, you make your way through the duty-free shops once off the ship and then you’ll have your Three Amigos restaurant and other shops/bars etc. We did a few of the obligatory port photo ops and headed to the taxi stand. Compared to the trek at Costa Maya, this walk is nothing! The taxi stand was a little unorganized as there was nothing to create a line queue so people would just walk up and merge into the group waiting. But within a few minutes, our group of 8 was in a van and headed to Nachi. We arrived Nachi at 11:35 and were quickly greeted by a member of the staff who took a welcome photo of our group and got us checked in. Once checked-in, we were led to our chairs under some palapas and we got settled in. We basically washed, rinsed and repeated from the day prior at Jamie’s. We ate, we drank, we enjoyed the gorgeous day. We spent the early part of the day on the beach and in the water and the last part of our day hanging at the pool. Drinks here were pretty standard fare – margaritas, daiquiris, rum punch, tequilla sunrise, etc. The food was also very good! The four-course lunch includes one appetizer, one soup or salad, one entrée and one dessert. For my appetizer I had the nachos (hold the beans this time), my salad was the fruit plate, my entrée was the Shrimp Your Way and I had the cheesecake dessert. Overall, we loved Nachi! While they can accommodate up to 130 guests, we were told there were only 80 people booked there that day. But honestly, it felt like way less than that! Our service was great and the environment couldn’t be beat!

We wanted to be back to the port by around 3:30 so some of the group could do some shopping. By 3:15, we were in a taxi van headed back to the port. I wandered through duty free looking for things for my kiddo and hubby. Struck out on the hubby (the Cuban cigars were very expensive – should have bought them from the vendor at Jamie’s the day before) but found another cute stuffed animal for my daughter. That girl LOVES her stuffed animals – she probably has well over a hundred and can’t let any of them go! She can even tell you when she got each one and who gave them to her! I was back on the ship a little after 4:00 and we headed up to the Aft pool bar for another drink. I introduced my sis to the Mocha Chocolate Getaway. She can’t drink rum cause it triggers migraines, so she asked for hers to be made with Vodka, which the bartender happily obliged!

I'll be posting my Cozumel pics in several different posts as well.

Before long, it was time to head back to our cabin to get ready for dinner and the evening’s Halloween festivities. I was dressing as a flapper for Halloween. I had gotten a great flapper style dress and accessories (headband, hair feather, gloves, fake cigarette holder, and fake pearl necklace) from Amazon. And I watched one YouTube on how to do a flapper hairstyle before the cruise. I figured it would give it my best shot…and I have to say, I was really happy with how it all came together! It was fun getting dressed up in costume on the ship! My sister had a Twister (the game, not tornado) costume she had gotten the last time we cruised over Halloween, Jody dressed up as a spiderweb and our friends from AZ were Pink Lady’s from Grease.

I was ready early and met some of our group at the Ivanhoe Theater for the 7:30 Country Road show. This show was just “meh” for me. The singers were very talented and sounded great! But I thought the song selection was terrible. Of all the songs they sang, I only knew 4 or 5 of them. And there was a pretty hokey storyline that detracted from the overall show itself. It was just a’ight for me, dawg!

After the show was over, we headed to dinner. Tonight, I believe I ate completely from the appetizer menu! I had the Steamed Mussels, BBQ Flatbread, Wild Rice, Gruyere, and Country Chicken Soup and the Alligator Beignets. I also had some ice cream for dessert. Service at dinner was pretty slow this evening. Not sure if it was because those of us who went to the show were about 5 minutes late to dinner making us the last table in the section to be served or if it was just an off night.

Following dinner, we took some group photos with the special Halloween themed backdrops they had out that evening. Then we headed up to Lido for the Halloween party and costume contest. This was the biggest crowd we had seen all week! It felt like the whole ship had come out for the Halloween festivities. Only the Red Frog Rum Bar on Lido was open. I found it odd that Blue Iguana wasn’t also being staffed to help cut down on wait times for drinks. Even with the crowds though, the bartenders kept the drinks flowing and the lines moved fairly quickly. Before long, the costume contests were getting underway. They divided the contest into four categories: youth, couples, groups and singles. CD Louis would call each group forward and anyone who wanted to participate could go up. Then he would go around and basically describe every participant’s costume. The Fun Squad would then choose the finalists – usually three or four. There didn’t really seem to be any rhyme or reason to how they were picking finalists. Some of the ones I thought were the best costumes didn’t get selected and some that I thought were the worst/most unoriginal costumes were chosen. Once the finalists were selected, the crowd got to determine the winner by applause and screams. My sis and I went down for the individual competition and she was selected by Louis as a finalist for her Twister costume. But alas, she didn’t win! Later, Louis came by and chatted with our group and said that he thought my sis should have won! He may have also just been flirting with her! We hung around Lido for a bit and then headed to the casino for a little blackjack time.

I forgot to mention earlier that one night we did go to the casino cage to get our $25 in free play money for being Platinum. I had thought that we would get a voucher of some sort or chips for the table. But they were handing out cold, hard cash! I probably played for an hour or so in the casino tonight and was still holding steady on my money. Once I made back that initial $100 I lost, I pretty much stayed somewhere between $75 up and $75 down the whole time. But I know I’m not going to make a killing playing blackjack on the ship. I really do enjoy it more for the entertainment I get from it and the people I meet! Even if I lose $100, I figure for the time I spend playing (probably on average of 2 hours per night), it’s costing me $10 per hour played. Not much else you can do for fun for only $10 per hour!

Once I got back to the cabin, I was feeling a little hungry again. For the first time ever, I used the Hub App to order food from room service. I ordered the firecracker shrimp which came with fries. The app told me the wait time would be around 20-30 minutes. Ordering room service this way really is like Door Dash or Uber Eats. You can track your order and see when it’s confirmed, when it’s being prepared and when it’s out for delivery. And it came much more quickly than the app said it would. I probably had my food within 15 minutes of ordering it. The shrimp were tasty and hit the spot! After I had a full belly (again), it was off to sleep!

October 26, 2022 – FUN Day at Sea

Jody woke up before me again and headed up to deck to grab some chairs. I was actually laying in bed trying to go back to sleep but to no avail. So I decided to get up and get a jump on my packing since it was our last sea day. I left out the few things I would need for getting ready for dinner that evening and for our travel day home the following day and packed up everything else. It felt great to have that out of the way and be able to really enjoy our last day onboard.

Our group was planning to do Sea Day Brunch again so after packing, I headed down to meet them at the Washington Dining Room. Again, we were seated very quickly. We ordered drinks right away but service was a bit scattered this morning. One waiter started out taking our drink orders, then someone else took over and things seemed to get lost in the mix a bit. But they eventually figured it out. This morning I had the Birthday Bellini, the Flaming Tomato Soup, the 12-Hour French Toast and a side of bacon. The French Toast was great as were the Bellinis (yep – I had two and may have even gotten a third for the road!). After brunch, we walked forward to the Pixels Gallery to look at the portraits we had taken that week. My sis and I each ended up buying three. Then I headed up to Lido and grabbed some seats for our group at the Red Frog Pub. It was an overcast morning with a bit of rain here and there. The activities were already underway out on Lido. When we got there, they were doing a pumpkin carving contest. The judges for the carving contest were supposed to be looking for scariness, cleanliness (on the inside) and also creativity of each pumpkin. The winning team was a mom and her two young kids. The kids were SO excited to have won and were jumping up and down and hugging their mom. It was pretty darn cute!

After the pumpkin carving contest was over, it was time for Groove for St. Jude which always draws a crowd. We got out there and did the Cupid Shuffle and enjoyed the fun music. By this time, the clouds were starting to part and the sun was coming out. The rest of the afternoon was beautiful! We found some chairs on Lido and really just enjoyed another chill day onboard. Sometime around 1:00-2:00, I got hungry for lunch. I hadn’t had a Guys Burger yet, so Kae Lee and I decided to split one. I know there’s been a lot of talk about the quality of Guy’s fries since the re-start, but ours were delicious! Especially with that yummy chipotle mayo dip! Guy’s hit the spot and we spent the rest of the day relaxing on deck and enjoying some cocktails. The couple sitting next to us even ended up being from where we live – even the same town as Jody! So that was kind of cool!

We headed back to the cabin to get ready for the last night onboard and put our suitcases outside of our door. We had #2 luggage tags and priority disembarkation. I again met some of our group at the Ivanhoe Theater for the America Rocks show. This show was way better than the previous night’s country show. The song selection was great and they approached it just like a concert without the hokey storyline to go with it! It was a fun time! Following the show, we made our way to our last dinner. Tonight, I had the Chicken Tenders, Steak, Ale & Cheddar Soup, Penne Mariscos and the Enchiladas for my entrée. Everything was delicious. The waitstaff entertained us with the standard last night song, “Leaving on a Cruise Ship” (honestly, it might be time to retire this one) and we left final tips with the Road Runner for him and his team. After dinner, I spent a little more time in the casino. At one point, the dealer stopped looked up and said, “We just turned!” I hadn’t even noticed it until she mentioned it. Then she said that we would be making one more turn before we were back into the Mississippi River. A little while later, I cashed in my chips and ending it up $80 overall!  Then it was back to the cabin where it was time to turn in for the last time aboard the Carnival Valor.

October 27, 2022 – Disembarkation Day

Well, here we are folks! Our time on the Carnival Valor has come to a close. We were up early to get ready and meet our group in the Washington Dining Room for one last meal onboard. While we ate, they were calling for those doing self-debarkation and carrying all of their luggage off to get off the ship. I believe they were calling these groups by muster station. After we ate, we headed back to our cabin to grab our remaining items, give our room steward Arda (who was great, by the way) some extra tip money and wait for our group to be called which didn’t take long. Once called, we walked down to Deck 5 then walked forward and took the circular stairs down to Deck 4. Then we went up to the furthest forward stairwell to go down to Deck 3. There were quite a few people getting off, but it moved quickly. Once into the terminal building, we were separated into two lines – one for those with passports and another for those with driver’s licenses and birth certificates. We had passports and did the facial recognition thing and were quickly ushered through to the baggage area – well all of us except Jody. The facial recognition software wasn’t recognizing her for some reason. But they finally got her processed. It was easy to locate our bags and within minutes we were in a taxi heading to the airport. We had already checked-in and checked our baggage on the Delta App. So, we just had to get our bags tagged and we were all set. Security at NOLA took no time at all and before long we were at our gate. Jody and I had upgraded the week before to Delta’s Comfort Plus for the return flights. We only had a 45-minute layover in Detroit, so we thought the quicker we were off the plane the better in case we had to make a mad dash!

Once on the plane, I decided to watch “Where the Crawdad’s Sing”. I picked that one over Elvis because it was about 20 minutes shorter, and I wasn’t sure I would be able to watch all of Elvis during the flight. Well, we ended up arriving in Detroit 25 minutes early and I still had about 8 minutes left of my movie when I had finally had to shut it off and deplane. No big deal – I would just finish the movie on my next flight!

Of course, since we had used our miles to upgrade to Comfort, we did arrive Detroit early and to find that our next gate was literally right next door! If we had not upgraded, we would have most definitely been running 15 minutes late and would have had to make a mad dash to the other end of the airport to catch our next flight. So, you’re welcome Kae Lee, as she kept her original seat in the Main cabin! LOL

We had about 30 minutes or so until our next flight was boarding. I was anxiously waiting to get onboard and up over 10,000 feet so I could get on the Delta Wi-Fi and finish my movie! But the Wi-Fi Gods had other plans for me – just like on my second flight going down to NOLA a week before, the Wi-Fi on this aircraft would not work! I would get the movie to pull up and then it would promptly freeze and boot me off the system. I tried getting on it for 15-20 minutes, but then gave up. It was a short flight, and I knew at that point my efforts were fruitless. So that evening, I ended up having to rent the movie on Amazon Prime just so I could watch the last 10 minutes to find out how it ended. But I will say, it was an excellent movie and now I’m reading the book as well! I’ve heard the book is even better.

Our plane from Detroit back to Cincinnati was a smaller regional jet, so we had to planeside check our smaller rolling suitcases. These would be returned to us at the bottom of the jetbridge once we got off the plane. As we were waiting there, I could tell the ramp agent outside of the jetbridge was having difficulty opening the door. A pilot on the inside of the bridge was trying to assist but to no avail. They said they were going to have to call airport maintenance to come out and try to open the door. So, we stood there and waited….and waited…and waited. Now, being that I worked in airports, including this one, for the better part of a decade, I suggested perhaps they could drive our planeside checked bags to another gate and let us pick them at the bottom of that jet bridge. But that idea didn’t gain any traction. A better course of action seemed to be for the ramp agent who had come inside another way to try to help us to repeatedly ram his backside into the door to get it to open. That seemed like an OJI (on-the-job injury) waiting to happen, but that’s just my opinion. Finally, someone came up with the idea of driving the bags around to the far side of the aircraft and using the conveyor belt to load them up into the aircraft galley where someone could them carry them out into the jetbridge. This whole process took probably 20 minutes. As I said, having worked in an airport for many years, I get that things happen. But there was no sense of urgency to get this resolved. Thankfully, we weren’t trying to make another connecting flight, but I’m sure some people waiting there were. I WAS trying to make it to my daughter’s softball practice that evening and was very anxious to see her after being gone a week. And Kae Lee didn’t have to planeside check a bag, so she was just stuck waiting for us in the terminal. Finally, we got our bags and were on our way. And in the grand scheme of things, our travels both directions were mostly smooth and on-time, so we can’t really complain. Since it took so long to get our carry bags, our checked bags were already sitting on the baggage carousel waiting for us. We grabbed the bags and headed to the parking garage to start looking for where my brother said he left my car parked when he flew out earlier that day! We found it easily and within minutes were on the road. I dropped Kae Lee, then Jody off at their homes and headed to my kiddo’s softball practice. I made it in time to watch the last half of practice and see her get a hit and work on catching fly balls.

I had a wonderful time with my friends on the Carnival Valor but I missed home especially my husband and daughter and it was great to be back! I had a busy weekend ahead catching up on life – laundry, housework, actual work and grocery shopping – before my husband was set to have knee replacement surgery on Halloween morning. So, it was definitely back to reality!

I am happy to answer any questions people may have about the ship, ports, food or anything else! We had a wonderful time on our first post-COVID cruise and I’m already looking to book my next one! The kiddo has been begging to go on another cruise so I’m looking at options for her Fall Break in October 2023. Her school has a full week off for fall break! I am leaning toward doing a 5-day cruise on the Carnival Sunshine out of Charleston. I have never been to Charleston and it would be great to cruise from there once before they close the port to cruise ships after 2024. Reading @willdra's previous trip report on her cruise from their recently got me really interested in it! Hoping to book again soon!

Observations and Other Musings That Don't Fit Anywhere Else!

·       The Red Frog Pub on this ship seemed like a total waste of space! I remember when I was on the Breeze back in 2015 and Vista in 2017, the Red Frog Pub was ALWAYS hoppin’! There was live music in there every evening, you were able to order yummy appetizers, they had pub games to play. It was a great addition to Carnival’s ships. But that was not the case on this ship! Other than our scheduled Meet & Greet, we didn’t go into the Red Frog Pub once. There was never any live music in there (that we saw anyway) and every time we walked by in the evening, it was DEAD! I never saw more than a handful of people in there at any given time. Other than the Cincinnati Bengals vs. the Atlanta Falcons game being shown on Sunday afternoon, I never was aware of any events scheduled here. It is a large space that more than accommodated our large group Meet & Greet, so it would seem Carnival would make a concerted effort to use this space to its capabilities.

·       Live entertainment in general on this ship seemed lacking. In the evenings, there was usually a trio playing in the atrium. We didn’t really spend much time in the atrium area, so I can’t really comment on how they were. But when we did walk by that way going to a show or something, it didn’t seem like they were drawing a huge crowd. Additionally, there was one guy singing in the casino bar each evening, but he was more background music than anything else. He had a decent voice but didn’t make any effort to engage those hanging out at the casino bar. I remember on my last cruise on the Paradise in 2019, the duo they had at the casino bar was amazing. And the area was packed each night! One night they played all 80’s music and everyone was up dancing and have a great time! That didn’t happen on the Valor.

·       One thing that hasn’t changed in years on Carnival ships is that their DJ’s have a true knack for killing a great vibe on the dance floor! Now, I am no spring chicken any longer, but I still love to get out and dance to great music! The only night the nightclub played any decent music for dancing was 70’s & 80’s night. That was the only night I saw the dance floor remotely full. But even then, the DJ would play 2-3 good songs and get the dance floor pretty filled up, then he would totally switch gears and play something awful and clear the floor within seconds. A good DJ should want to have a full dance floor and it doesn’t seem that Carnival’s can do that with any regularity. Then after the hour of 70’s & 80’s music, they switch it to all rap music and dance floor doesn’t see much action the rest of the night. It feels like the DJ is more interested in playing his personal preferences than catering to the crowd on hand.

·       Desserts on Carnival are severely lacking! We ate dinner in the dining room every night and I ordered dessert twice. Once I just got a couple scoops of ice cream and once, I tried the Warm Chocolate Melting cake. I really want to love the WCMC, but I just don’t. I feel like I try it once every cruise, but I can never do more than a couple bites! None of the desserts on the dining room menu really called out to me at all! Where is the Cheesecake (other than the steakhouse)?? No Key Lime Pie? Those used to be staples years ago! Let’s change it up, Carnival!

·       This ship was reportedly sold out, but it honestly never really felt like it! I never waited in long lines for food up on Lido deck, wait times for tables for brunch were usually less than five minutes and I attribute even that long of wait more to the size of our group than anything else, seats were never hard to find at shows, and we never waited long for bar service. We went to two of the main shows in the theater and there were abundant seats left even as the show began. Finding a deck chair on Lido during sea days wasn’t hard either – even on Serenity! And for the most part (outside of our dinner table neighbors), people were kind and respectful!

·       Wi-Fi and Hub App – Previously I have not been one to get a Wi-Fi package onboard. I love the aspect of being disconnected from the real world while on a cruise. My first experience with the ship’s Wi-Fi was in 2019 when my husband and I cruised to Cuba and left our then 4-year-old daughter home with grandma and grandpa. I wanted to be sure that I could at least message back and forth with them to check in on our daughter, so I got the Social Package. I found that it was spotty at best on that cruise. This time I decided to get the Premium package to try to be able to FaceTime with my husband and daughter at home. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked. FaceTime audio worked great – though in my cabin I couldn’t get the video portion to work. It would usually just freeze as soon as my husband answered. I didn’t really try FaceTime outside of my cabin as I was afraid the background noise would make it hard to hear. It may have worked better in other areas of the ship. My daughter was also able to audio call me from her Amazon Echo Dot. I also had good luck with sending and receiving iMessages and FaceBook messages. The hub app also seemed to work better than it has on some of my past cruises especially the chat feature. Though toward the end of the week, messages seemed to not be as a reliable and some within our group were dropped from previous group chats. But it all got the job done for the most part! Several in our group did have to go to Guest Services on the first day to get their Hub App to work. GS was able to mess with their settings which got it to connect. My biggest gripe with the Hub App was that I wouldn’t get notification of messages. I would just have to remember to go into the chat periodically to look for messages. If Carnival could fix that bug (or if anyone else knows of a fix) that would make it even better for me!

·       Ducks have gotten to be a BIG deal on cruises! Now, my last cruise was in 2019 and back then I would hear occasionally about people hiding or finding ducks, but they were everywhere on this cruise! There were big ducks, little ducks, plain ducks, fancy ducks, even 3D printed ducks! People were bringing them on by the bagful and hiding some each day. We weren’t even looking for ducks and still managed to find five just walking down the hall to our cabin! We found two at different times on the cabin stewards cleaning carts and a couple just on the side rail along the hall. No one in our group really wanted their ducks so they all came home with me for my daughter! Also, people decorating their doors really have stepped up their game! Especially with it being Halloween – it was really cool to walk down the hallways and see all the fun Halloween themed decorations people put out!

·       As always with the Cheers package, you still must pay tax on your drinks while you are in US waters. What I hadn’t considered was that since the first 8 hours or so of our voyage was on the Mississippi River, we would have to pay the tax for a lot longer time than we do when sailing from our normal Florida ports. Same goes when returning and making the turn back up the river. Those taxes kick in right away! It’s not a big deal, but those who don’t regularly cruise out of NOLA may not be aware of this so just wanted to mention it.

·       Food – I have read a lot since the re-start about quality and quantity issues related to food on Carnival. I personally didn’t experience that. We certainly didn’t go hungry and while not everything was a slam dunk, most of what we got was really good! As usual, at dinner in the MDR, I tended to gravitate toward the appetizers and soups. I love that the portion sizes aren’t huge so I can get more different options and not have a lot of waste. I do miss the Warm Roasted Pumpkin Soup still though! It was my favorite. Also, I remember Carnival used to have Port of Call meal selections on port days. I didn’t see those this time around. I always enjoyed those as it was something different from the standard Carnival Fare! For lunches, I was able to try both Blue Iguana, Guys’s as well as the Sushi bar. But I totally forgot to try the Seafood Shack! I am going to have to make a point to try it next cruise! With it being all the way aft, it just falls off my radar! And we didn’t get pizza this cruise either so I can’t comment on how the lines were for that.
