What to wear to visit a mosque

If you’re planning to go to a mosque in the Middle East, make sure, if you’re female, that your arms and legs are completely covered. When we went to the mosque in Muscat on our Azamara cruise recently one lady in our group had to borrow her husbands socks to cover the bottom part of her legs as she was wearing cropped trousers. Another couple of ladies had to borrow shirts, one from her husband who luckily had a T-shirt underneath and one from my husband as he had a shirt in his bag in case he was told to cover up. One lady had to hire a full length gown. We all had to have our hair completely covered too.

We visited Hagia Sophia in Istanbul recently. Because the weather is a bit colder now, the dress code isn't an issue. We also had to take off our shoes and store then in open shelves or place them in a bag to carry around. Women had to cover their hair. A pashmina worked just fine.
