How safe are the ports in the Mexican Riviera

My brother and I are going next March. He wants to walk around the cities...I wasn't sure how safe this is with all the stuff I keep hearing?

We still feel perfectly safe in the town tourist areas. Was just at these ports in January and again last month and will be going again January 2023. Enjoy yourself.

 

Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Cabo. Also Hutalco during our Panama Canal itinerary.

Just keep your valuables on the ship, donot take more money then you might need (cash is king in general). Of course donot drink too much alcohol. Do or do not what you would do in your home town. If taking a cab, make your price before entering.

Most, if not all violence tends to occur away from the tourist zones. It is cartel violence and it mostly occurs in the local neighborhoods (not the tourist zones). Sometimes - the results of this violence will be put on display in the tourist areas to get the attention of the business owners and local media as well as the local government. The cartels do that as a way to communicate power, but as I said, the actual violence rarely occurs in the actual tourist zones.

 

But that does not mean that cruisers and other visiting tourists don't do incredibly stupid things and either become an attractive crime target or get arrested. Just look at all the incidents that occur (seems almost daily) at our airports or onboard the planes themselves.

 

Go on your cruise, BE SMART, BE A GOOD TOURIST, BE RESPECTFUL, and chances are very good that you will have an absolutely amazing time.

Stop already with all these "How Safe ..." posts!!  The Mexican tourist towns and cities are safe if you are a safety conscious traveler.  Stay away from illegal drug areas.  Stay out of red light zones.  Do not get drunk/stoned and foolish.  Don't start trouble.

Thank you for stating the obvious. I too am sick and tire of the “how safe”…post. If you are truly that afraid stay or vacation somewhere you think is safe. Just use your common sense just as you do when you are on your home soil.

Let's just say I feel safer in these Ports than Los Angeles. 😁
