Cobh to Cork on a Sunday

We will be docked at Cobh on Sunday, July 9, from 10 to 4.  Since we (6 adults) will be there such a short time, we are thinking of going into Cork on our own.  At first, I thought taking the train into Cork would be fun and easy, but the schedule is limited on Sundays.  I'm assuming there will be taxis available at the pier, which might be a better option and perhaps take the train back.  My questions are:

• What is open in Cork on Sunday?
• Is it easy to get a taxi in Cork (or get an Uber) to get back to Cobh if the train schedule doesn't work out?
• Have you ever walked from the train station in Cork to the city center or vice versa?
• Have you ever been on the Hop On Hop Off bus in Cork?

Our ship got rescheduled from Cobh to Ringaskiddy shortly before our cruise began.  So just anticipate that is a possibility.  A little more difficult (not impossible) to get a taxi there - it is an industrial area and they keep the taxis a few blocks away from what I recall....

Most of the stores and shops are open.  The English Market is closed.  St Anne's, Shandon is open as is the old Cork Gaol.

Too many times! 🙄 It is about a 15/20 minute walk, mostly along the side of the River Lee

 

• Have you ever been on the Hop On Hop Off bus in Cork?
• Actually, no.  Cork is very compact but with very narrow streets so the bus can be slow.  A Sunday will be better.  You could use the HoHo bus to get out to Cork Gaol and maybe St Finbarre's Cathedral as they are slightly outside the centre.

 

Couple of other points:  There are usually extra trains scheduled during cruise ship visits and details are usually shown in the station.  Cobh itself is a lovely town.  You dock right in the centre and there are animations teams and music on the sea front.

If you are on Jewel of the Seas, then she is scheduled to dock in Cobh ok and Seven Sea Voyager is docking in Ringaskiddy.

VMax1700, thanks for all the great information!  We are on the Jewel of the Seas.  We are looking forward to our visit to Cobh and Cork!

Another Cobh question that maybe VMax1700 can answer:  I have been to Cobh several times on previous cruises and have done the Cork/Blarney/Kinsale tour and have also done the Titanic and afternoon in Cobh.  This time we are docked in Ringsakiddy.  Can you suggest a day tour from there?  We are scheduled to be in port from 10 am to 7 pm, so have 9 hours to work with.  Thanks!

Been in Cobh in June 2022 and can you tell you this:

 

Cobh itself is also worthwhile to stay instead of going somewhere else...

It's connected to cruising since over 100 years, that very port was the last stop of the Titanic and a nice museum in the former ticket office is great to visit, also nearby the Lusitania was torbedoed and sunk and the survivors where brought here on land...also nice to visit is nearby "Spike Island" a former jail and fortress (has to be booked in advance online) and right beside the pier is the "Heritage Museum" where one can learn about the interesting story of this place...over 2'000'000 Irish immigrated from here into the world...

For those thinking of taxis the main app in use here is FreeNow (used to be HailO) and there are no rideshare operators like lyft or uber. 

The Discover Ireland website is a good option for finding general tourist info.
