Transportation strikes in Europe

Be sure to vigilantly check on your flight status if traveling into/from/in Europe the next months.  A number of transportation strikes are happening—including over the Easter weekend.  Don’t be that person who assumes that you will be fine if you have Viking Air.  Munich and Frankfurt airports are closing on Sunday and Monday, for example, and passengers are urged to consider other transportation—however, trains will also be on strike.  Heathrow security is going on strike soon.

If LHR security is striking hopefully the Govt will replace them with the Armed Forces, similar to when the Border Force went on strike. Heathrow passport control ran quicker and smoother than normal.

Germany transportation strikes.
From PBS;

 “Munich Airport, the country's second-busiest, said that ver.di is hitting it with two days of strikes and it will have no regular passenger or cargo flights on either Sunday or Monday.

Ver.di is engaged in a series of pay negotiations, notably for employees of Germany's federal and municipal governments. In that case, it is seeking a 10.5 percent pay raise. Employers have offered a total of 5 percent in two stages plus one-time payments of 2,500 euros ($2,700).

It already has staged a series of one-day walkouts at individual airports and in public services, including local transit.

EVG is seeking a raise of 12 percent. Deutsche Bahn also has offered a two-stage raise totaling 5 percent plus one-time payments.

Germany's annual inflation rate in February was 8.7 percent.”

Both sides appear to be very far apart. Let’s hope there aren’t prolonged strikes into the summer

This is what occurred when we arrived at Heathrow the beginning of last month during a Border Force strike. Just used the electronic passport gates and if you had an issue , the regular gates were manned by Armed Forces personnel. Going thru the electronic gates was definitely quicker than a manual check and the lines were short. Hopefully it will be the same way for the next LHR strike action. Welcome to Europe 😉

Someone on CC.com recommended the website "Euronews" as a good source for information on travel strikes.  https://www.euronews.com/travel/travel-news is devoted to all travel news.  You can also do a web search for "Euronews" and the country of interest for news specific to that location.  A search for "Germany" picks up a couple of articles about the planned strike:   https://www.euronews.com/news/europe/germany

I’ve posted this in the roll call for the Mediterranean Odyssey that embarks April 2nd in Venice, but in case anyone misses it, be aware. If you have not made pre-cruise arrangements, flying into Venice on embarkation day may be problematic. Italian air traffic controllers are striking on April 2 from 1:00PM to 5:00PM. I suggest you check with your airlines.

Since this labor action seems to be concentrated from now until Easter, I wonder if it will affect any of our excursions or docking?

Looks like 2023 is shaping up to be another Year of Strikes  like it was several years ago. Strikes on and off from Spring until fall by airline workers, transit workers ATC workers , and anyone else that felt like jumping on that platform 😬. As my mother use to say “it’s a great life if you don’t weaken “ !
