PurpleMoonlight Posted April 2, 2023 #1 Share Posted April 2, 2023 Hi all. I've not sailed with Cunard before. I'm considering one of the sheltered balcony cabins. I see some are adjacent to the bulkheads. Now I thought this might be good as it may assist sound insulation from the next door cabin, but then I wondered if the superstructure itself may cause more noise. Any thoughts or knowledge please? I think your only chance of hearing noise from the adjacent cabin is if there is a door between them. These are shown on the deck plans. Otherwise I wouldn’t worry. I’ve never noticed particular noise when next a a bulkhead either, but perhaps in very rough weather?
Ray66 Posted April 2, 2023 #3 Share Posted April 2, 2023 We chose a sheltered balcony cabin next to a bulkhead once which did help with talking noise coming from one side on the balcony but we still got it on the other. The balcony had a "tinny" feel because of all the metal but I would still choose one again.
PurpleMoonlight Posted April 2, 2023 Author #4 Share Posted April 2, 2023 Many thanks both. The sheltered balconies are supposed to be a little larger than the open ones, but to be honest that doesn't matter much to me. I much prefer to sit in the shade and these seem to work well for me. Rare 3rdGenCunarder Posted April 3, 2023 #5 Share Posted April 3, 2023 Sheltered balconies are a little deeper, but same width as regular balcony cabins. I haven't noticed a difference when I've been next to a bulkhead vs not. I agree with @exlondoner that you do get noise through the door when you have a connecting cabin. The actual balcony of a sheltered balcony cabin is about 1 foot deeper than the balcony of a glass front balcony. The width is the same. There is no difference in the cabins (living space) themselves. We have sailed in a sheltered cabin, non-bulkhead, and did not notice any noise from the neighboring cabins. Hope this helps, Jack
richard_london Posted April 6, 2023 #7 Share Posted April 6, 2023 I chose one on my last QM2 specifically because of the bulkhead for the same reasons. I have in the past in the standard cabins had noise, but I am a light sleeper. I would choose one again. The only thing I would say is that with a metal fronted balcony and one slightly deeper, it can make the cabin a bit dark when it isn't a bright day, but that isn't an issue for me. moses0 Posted April 7, 2023 #8 Share Posted April 7, 2023 Been in Sheltered Balcony several times and never issue with sound problems. Choose deck 5 and you only have cabins above and below instead of a public area that may be noisy.
canoncruiser Posted April 8, 2023 #9 Share Posted April 8, 2023 Bulkheads are not problem for me-in fact I’ve just booked one. I especially prefer them on TA’s when the weather can be boisterous.
