LGA to Brooklyn Cruise Terminal

My wife and I will be on the Meraviglia, September 18. We will fly into LGA the 17th on Southwest, landing at 5 PM.

What is the best plan concerning where to stay the night of the 17th and the most cost efficient manner for ground transportation to the hotel (possibly free shuttle?) and from the hotel to the cruise terminal. I am looking for a midpriced safe, quiet hotel with a restaurant or close to restaurants.

Also, is a return 11:55 AM return flight a wise choice? We have TSA Precheck.

Your ship sails from Brooklyn-- there is no free shuttle in NYC. Best option would be Uber/Lyft. You could also take a NYC yellow cab but pricing will be similar and car quality will be a little bit lower.

As to where to stay, from a pure economical standpoint, most likely one of the airport hotels by LGA. Personally I would spend a little more and stay in Brooklyn (downtown or Williamsburg)-- better hotels, closer to the cruise terminal, MUCH better dining options than you will find at the airport hotels.

"Midpriced" is totally subjective-- middle of the road pricing in NYC is going to be much higher than it is pretty much anywhere else-- what's your budget?

It's on the front end of what's recommended but should be fine, especially with Precheck.

I don't have a "budget", and I understand the New York City hotel market. It looks like $200 - $300 will get a decent hotel in the Brooklyn area for the 17th. It sounds like obtaining any complimentary transportation to a hotel that will fit the bill is not going to happen. I will probably get a Dial 7 for LGA to the hotel and hotel to the port.

Any hotel recommendations would help.

Thanks much.

One thing to consider is you will be landing at 5:00. You won’t be at your hotel in Brooklyn until 6:30-7:00 pm. Some of the less expensive Brooklyn hotels have no restaurants attached, and there’s no place to get food within walking distance.

Take a look at The Hoxton in Williamsburg-- at the other end of that cost range (well really a little above $300) but it has a tremendously good restaurant on its roof called Laser Wolf (which you should also make a reservation for since its a Saturday night). You'll be getting in a little later but this way you won't even need to leave the hotel and its one of NYC's hotter tables right now.

Correct. For such a shorter trip (assuming you go somewhere in Brooklyn to stay) Dial 7 is going to be fairly expensive for what it is ($80-100 vs about $45 with Uber).

I get that. Don't misunderstand. I am not looking to get the cheapest hotel room on the planet. I am looking for a reasonable priced room that works for my purposes. I am open to whatever that may cost, but I don't think that I would have to spend $400 or $500 for a night.

In mid-September, I would think about a downtown Manhattan hotel - several near the ferry which would bring you right next door to BCT - while offering a number of great places to eat/see. Brooklyn near the cruise terminal is pretty much a waste land. No free airport transfers, but yellow cab and Uber are convenient.

Stick to Downtown hotels, even the financial district for the weekend (Friday/Saturday).

United Nations Opening is September 5th. Then there is the planned UN Sustainable Summit on September 18th so hotel prices in Manhattan will be very expensive. A lot of foreign dignitaries as well so travel around the City will be impacted. Even NYC Ferry that travels the East River will be affected as they will stop mid-town and further north service at random times and we have armed boats in the East River on patrol for NYC Police, Coast Guard, and if US President is coming Navy.

There are no immediate restaurants nearby. Flatbush Ave is a busy street all day long as it is the main truck access to the Manhattan Bridge. You could walk up Flatbush Ave to DeKalb Ave for access to the Subway and Juniors Restaurant famous for their cheesecake which has a Diner-type menu and a very extensive cheesecake menu.    (The Extension part of the address is just that Flatbush Ave ended at Fulton Street before they built the Manhattan Bridge).

Safe? You are almost across the street from where the NYFD Headquarters and NYPD 911 Center is. But the streets will not be crowded closer to the hotel, up at DeKalb Ave is Long Island University, and before that at Myrtle Ave (MetroTech) is NYU School of Engineering where there are residential towers. Across the street from you towards the Manhattan Bridge are residential condos.

That's all I know as I'm only in the area (MetroTech) during the day at work. DeKalb Ave station of the subway has the B (part-time Weekdays only 6th Ave service) and Broadway R and Q lines if you want to visit the city (Sorry New Yorker here, I mean Manhattan).
