Venice Hotel Location

We are 8 adults with 8 large bags returning from a Royal Caribbean cruise getting dropped off at Piazzale Roma staying 1 night in Venice before we fly home.  We'll arrive Venice around 11am and flight out the next day is around noon.

Where are we best staying? Seems like it'll be a lot easier to stay by Piazzale Roma. Is it going to be worth it for one night getting our bags in and out of Venice City center?  Are there hotels or services than can help get us to a hotel in city center?

What are our options?

If you look around the board, there are many discussions on the topic. Yes, there are hotels at Piazzale Roma, and with bags and all, it is very easy to stay there. Otherwise, you are looking at a water taxi, or "water bus" or vaporetto, to get further from the bus dropoff.

You really would be reliant on a water taxi here. Sure you could take a vaporetto but with 8 people and bags it’ll be much easier to use water taxis.

If you don’t stay in Piazzale Roma you’ll need to find a hotel that has their own private dock. Easy enough as there are many but they tend to be in well located areas and will be a premium cost wise compared to less expensive options not in the city core.

If I had only one day I would bite the bullet and just stay at a nice hotel near Piazza San Marco. You’ll pay through the nose but you’ll spent a lot less time schlepping and more time seeing the city.

That's helpful but I'm still confused a bit. If we stay near Piazza San Marco, how do we get from where we get dropped off at Piazzale Roma to there?  Like for example, I  happened to see Hotel Olimpia Venice.  Is that convenient for this?

With only an afternoon and evening in Venice, staying in the Piazzale Roma area makes sense.  No point schlepping luggage onto a vaporetto to go 30-40 minutes to St Marks.

This way you can drop your luggage at your PRoma hotel, walk a block to the Grand Canal vaporetto station and start sightseeing.  And the next morning there will be taxis at Proma to take you to VCE, a 20 minute driv

A list of PRoma hotels.  The one bridge is very small.

I'd recommend you use google maps (or similar) to get an idea of the lay of the land.  I just pulled up Piazzale Roma to Hotel Olimpia and see it's less than a four-minute walk with one good bridge (if you drop the yellow "person" icon on the lower left of the map you can even "walk" the route!).

With just one day staying in Piazzale Roma really makes the most sense.  Without all your luggage it's really easy to go to/from, and as mapleleaves stated it gives you more time to tour without wasting a lot of time getting your luggage "settled" in.  The next day it will be a snap getting a taxi.

If you do elect to stay closer to St Marks or Rialto than I'd prebook a water taxi for both ways.  Not all hotels have private docks, but the hotel will give you the nearest public dock.

This is good stuff.  Something like Hotel Olimpia or Hotel Moresco sounds perfect.  We'll be coming via private shuttle so driver could likely get us as close to the closest bridge we'd need to walk over.  2-4 minute walk to hotel, dump luggage, sightsee, back to hotel at night, up in the morning, walk 4 minutes, taxi to airport.  For 1 night, seems like it would be a lot of work to get to/from St. Marks with luggage.

It won't be a lot of work, it will just be more money. The hotels near San Marco will cost more than Piazzale Roma but some of the options will be considerably nicer. The added cost of a water taxi will be significant. But, for the one day you are in town, you will be front and center to all the things you would be walking over to go see.

The next day there would be no need to return to Piazzale Roma for a car to the airport, you could depart with a water taxi directly to the airport which is a lot of fun and a great experience. Again-- will cost more.

Venice is one of those cities in Europe where you do actually get what you pay for.

Not a lot of work? So how do we get from Piazzale Rona to San Marcos easily with a lot of luggage?

You take a water taxi, with you and your luggage on board, directly to a hotel with a private dock. The hotel bell staff will unload and handle the bags.

Very easy to do- just costs more. But you’re closer to the area you’re going to be touring on such a short stay.
