ofallongirl Posted November 3, 2023 #1 Share Posted November 3, 2023 I have a question for anyone. My husband and I will be on the Oosterdam next August 25 to Sept 8 on the 14 day Adriatic Gems and Aegean Jewels. We are looking forward to going however I need some help or suggestions regarding our stop at Civitaecchia/Rome. We will be in port for Rome on Sept 1 from 7 AM to 3 PM which given that it takes almost 90 minutes from the port to Rome it seems like a very short visit. We have been to Rome before and my husband really wants to return to the Coliseum. He felt our visit last time was very short and he wanted to spend more time there. We also want to get a good lunch (pasta) while in Rome these things would take up most of our time there before we would need to head back to the port. I am having some knee problems so I am not looking to do a DIY train trip and would want transportation to cut down on the walking. I am looking for thoughts or suggestions on how to arrange such a trip without costing a small fortune for a private tour. Are there any tour companies that would work with us on this? Just looking for ideas or direction of how to do this. Thanks for your help. Amy and Harry
Rare richwmn Posted November 3, 2023 #2 Share Posted November 3, 2023 Try Rome Cabs, they should be able to set up something for you
CruiserBruce Posted November 3, 2023 #3 Share Posted November 3, 2023 If you look over on the Italy board, here: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/464-italy-ports/ You will see many recommendations, including the wonderful Rome in Limo. However, things like that aren't going to be cheap. They are very efficient, and certainly the best way to allot your time.
Rare cruisemom42 Posted November 4, 2023 #4 Share Posted November 4, 2023 Unfortunately, with such a short stop, there is no good "hack" other than doing a private tour to do what you want to do in the limited time you have. Why in the world is HAL giving such a short time in port?? At any rate, I can only second the recommendations above. A good private tour is not going to be that much more expensive than a ship tour for two, and you should be able to accomplish what you want that way. One note: Tickets for the Colosseum are getting harder and harder to snag. Be sure to educate yourself on how to get them when the time comes. I don't think private tours like the ones mentioned above will get them for you. (I believe some of them used to do it, but the situation is really difficult now and there are no guarantees...)
MBP&O2/O Posted November 4, 2023 #5 Share Posted November 4, 2023 At risk of being a doom and gloom merchant. 0730x1500? Off the ship by 0730 ... assuming it berths on time. Back on board by 1430 latest, possibly 1400 even? Allow three hours traveling there and back. Four hours max in Rome ... probably nearer three. Good luck 🙂🤞
