Recommended Posts

Got a group of 8 and we will be in in Malta for the day......

Any recommendations for a private tour?

(We are interested in making the most of our day and seeing all that we can)

Unless you plan on going out of town, Valletta itself offers enough sites/sights for a port day and no tour would be necessary as it can all be done on foot.  If intending to visit out of town you would need to look at tourist information to get an  idea of where you would want to go.  Even if you don't want to book one,  looking at the shorex on offer would give you ideas of what could be managed in your timeframe.

To get you off to a good start, be up on deck early (maybe an hour before ETA) for the arrival into The Grand Harbour of Valletta. I suggest either forward facing or starboard for the best views.

The Grand Harbour entrance is, IMHO one of the most scenic and impressive sail-ins of any port anywhere.  Local boat tours are offered but you will already have two chances for free, one arriving, one departing.

I agree 100% The best sail-way IMHO is/was Venice via Grand Canal.

We went with   https://www.touringmalta.com/   and were very pleased.   Note we were there for one port stop day on Christmas day a few years ago.   So finding a tour guide was difficult.   The primary tour guides from this company were unavailable on Xmas but they were very helpful and finding a guide for us and just ran it through their company even though it wasn't one of their regular guides.   It was a great tour.

Ahhh,  Ok, a few things about your post to keep the record clear.  Since Venice is now closed to cruise ships, the wonderful views (in/out) of Venice are to be no more except for some lucky folks who will spend the big bucks for some very small luxury ships.

We would also point out that no cruise ship has ever cruised on the Grand Canal.  The ships used the Giudecca Canal to get to and from the cruise port.  The Grand Canal is simply not big enough to handle cruise ships not to mention that all the local traffic would be like trying to drive a large ship down 5th Ave in NYC :).

We do agree that boating on the Grand Canal is an amazing experience.  Folks can do it quite cheap by simply taking a Vaporetto (Line 1 or 2) around Venice.  So much fun,

Hank

@CCJack, we are thinking about booking a half-day tour (Blue Grotto + Mdina) with this company because of your suggestion. I'm looking for some reviews on them but unable to find any. I'm guessing because their name is so generic the search term has gotten me everywhere but specific reviews for them. Would you say more about what tour you took and what it included? Thanks lots!! We'll be in Malta in about 4 weeks' time. Really excited!

sure, let me do some checking on my past emails with them and their current website and make sure it is one in the same, etc.

Our tour was in 2018 and Chris (owner) handled the emails with us and he found us a guide who was willing to work on xmas day.   Their current website shows the same owner and also has a photo of their tourguides and our tour guide is in the photo, so she is still associated with the company.

It was a great tour given most all businesses were closed on xmas day.   Ours was a 1/2 day walking tour of Valletta and Mdina (with a short van ride between the two).   Our specific tour I don't see listed on their current website but they could change the tour names from time to time.

I think the fact they are in business in 2018 and still in business now is a good sign.  Not sure why you are not seeing a lot of reviews, maybe they don't go through viator, etc.

Malta is very interesting.. enjoy your trip.

Thanks a million for this, @CCJack! I've sent a WhatsApp message and "Chris" responded immediately. I do my best to check reviews before booking. Something we did not have pre-Google days. LOL!  Malta looks AMAZING and I'm guessing this first taste will have me wanting to return for more.
