Monte Carlo - Places to eat & things to do

I think I've accidentally deleted my photo of the Casino Supermarket Pizza menu in Monaco. This is one I downloaded a few years ago. I think prices are from 2019 and will have changed quite a bit.

I'll need to take another next time we're there.

Parts (slices) are only available if they have a full pizza cooked already

ROFL at D&Ns post.  While we have sometimes availed ourselves of supermarket food while on long driving trips, it has not been our norm on cruises.  And to be in (or close) to the south of France and not take advantage of some of the terrific cuisine almost seems like a crime.  But I must admit your suggetion (and photo) does make the idea appear to be a decent option.

We are still wrestling with what to do with an April port day in MC.  DW and I truly dislike the city, and our norm would be to grab the bus (not too far from the port) over to Nice (where we would eventually have a nice long lunch).  But now, the suggestion to take the train (or bus) over to Menton also seems like it has some merit.

Funny thing is that when we are simply on driving trips in that part of Europe we always manage to completely bypass MC (easily done).  On a cruise the only way to truly bypass is to stay on the ship.

We plan to walk to the Casino and look around it.

If your plan includes going inside the casino, do check before you go as there may be

1)a dress code

2) an entrance fee

3) a minimum bet.

4) anything else you need to be aware of

And have your passports with you to show at entry.  This because Monegasques are themselves barred from entering the casino. (The ruling family didn't want them to lose their money) and your passports will be checked to ensure you do not have Monegasque nationality.

Hank, not everyone has pockets as deep as your own appear to be, and a quality meal (even excluding any alcohol) in MC/Monaco is likely to come at high (very high )cost. I cannot even begin to imagine what the cost of a "terrific" meal might be.

Even a fairly standard or mediocre meal will likely cost a lot too, so hardly the  experience anyone would be hoping for.

I think that a quality picnic-type meal in a pretty garden and/ or with a fabulous view would be a good compromise in this luxury location.

That is one reason (among quite a few) that we do not stay in MC for lunch (or anything else) and head usually head over to Nice.  Besides, the soupe de poisson I get in Nice is a real treat.

You are playing into the old Scottish stereotype :).  Only teasing.  We do enjoy visiting your part of the country and the whiskey is a personal favorite.

Tthought I was only pointing out the obvious, not being stereotypical.

And BTW, in Scotland, WHISKY is drunk, in Ireland, WHISKEY  is drunk.  Tastes good irrespective of the spelling!😁

I think lots of folk are surprised they just have to find somewhere to sit/stand on a hillside.

And one assumes with only a partial view.  Will confess I have zero interest in F1.  To me it sounds like angry bees for the entire race duration.

When were you last here?

We lived in Cagnes-sur-Mer a while back, but we are back frequently to visit friends.  Unfortunately, it has been two years since we were last there.  Got to go back soon!

Indeed, at many of the food festivals held in our town there are servings of Peach Melba available. I would probably not have heard of Nellie Melba without the story of it's creation. I'm well prepared now for the question coming up on Pointless. 🤣

Those festivals were fun.  I also took some cooking lessons at a restaurant near Escoffier's place.  Lot6s of fun and good eating.  The Escoffier museum is quite an interesting place, good for cruisers 4th or 5th time there.

On the subject of Casino supermarket food, it has always been a great takeout.  I am a little concerned what will happen to the quality if it switches over to a Hypermarché.

As @Hlitner says, we avoid eating or doing much of anything in MC.  We did have to take a lot of visitors there at one time, but now we just go back to Nice or any place else.

Thank you all for your tips and suggestions.  I really appreciate it!

We like the idea of a nice picnic somewhere with a nice view.

Like I said he wants to walk around the Casino to say he has been there, not to actually play. He doesn't play at the tables.

I like to window shop! I don't want to spend the money, but I love to look and dream! My favorite thing we do once a year is going to the multi-million-dollar open houses at home and act like we could afford it!

I love to also just sight-see and take photos of the pretty views.

I can direct you to the Louboutin shop 😀. They have been tried for fit and maximum heel height, but not purchased as yet!

They actually seemed quite happy to offer a fitting without buying.

And I've just found my own photo of the takeaway Pizza Menu at Casino Supermarket in Monaco on August 16th 2023. We've had the Poulet (twice) and Chorizo, and we had slices a previous time when a niece was visiting and we just took a seat at the port to eat them.

The photo was exactly where it should have been in my archives so I don't know how I missed it before.

Don't forget to pick up some wine at the Casino supermarket for your picnic.  Their pastries are also very good.

If you like to visit nice houses, go visit the Prince's Palace for a view of a really "old money" house.  The Grimaldis have been the rulers since 1297 and have occupied the palace (with lots of renovations) for 700 years.

Also fun to see are the mega-yachts at the harbor.  If you want "rich and famous" you are at the right place.

and the little "Bateau Bus" sails the short distance across that harbour next to those mega yachts.

Is your ship ancoring right in Monaco itself ? Or even on a pier in Monaco ?

Then I would opt to eat your lunch on board.

Monte Carlo is very walkable and you can visit for example the ducal palace and the cathedrale nearby (where the tombs of the late Count Rainier and his wife Grace Kelly are) in the morning and

walk along the race track of the Formula 1 and see the Casino on the other side in the afternoon.

Monte Carlo has room to dock two ships (depending on their size).  We have only tendered into MC when there were several other ships in port and our vessel obviously drew the short straw.

We have only ported there 2 or 3 times but docked each time. As hank has mentioned, at anchor would only be used if the port is very busy that day.

I suggest you look at the 2024 cruise schedule  on the official Port of Monaco website  or on cruisetimetables or similar where you can look at your date and see how many other ships will be in the same day. You might also learn if you are to be definitely at anchor or docked.

I will look this up. I was going off of what our itinerary from my husband's work says as it says "Anchor".  Could be just a word they used as I just looked at Itinerary on our Regent account and it doesn't say which.  This is a Charter Cruise that his work has done.
