Puerto Chiapas

Recommended Posts

It's discussed occasionally on the Mexican Riviera board, as it is in Mexico, not Panama. It is not a common stop, typically only on long cruises to/from South America,  or Canal cruises.

There is a resort facility there, and a number of excursions to local sites.

Think the port was built by Carnival Corp.

We had a port call to Puerto Chiapas in the winter of 2017 during a full transit cruise of the Panama Canal from Miami to LA.  I covered what we did there in Comments 59 and 60 in my review of the trip at the link below.  My bottom line then: "a sea day would have been far preferable."  Maybe things have changed in seven years. 😁

Thanks.
It is a replacement for Nicaragua on the full Panama transit for Princess now.

A quiet port with a decent facility (which we think was partially financed by some in the cruise industry).  What to do?  You can take an excurions (if you like excursions) or simply negotiate with a taxi driver to take you to the nearby town of Tapachula.  Not a bad place for a few hours :).  Many of the available excursions will focus on chocolate and/or coffee..both of which have history in this area.  By the way, as a part time resident of Mexico (Puerto Vallarta) we appreciate the quality of Mexican chocolate.  The coffee? Tis OK.
