drgigi Posted June 21 #1 Share Posted June 21 Docking in Naples. I cannot tell from the tour description if Crystal Symphony’s tour to Pompeii is just a drop off-pick up or if it actually is a tour with guide. Any information would be appreciated. Rare Keith1010 Posted June 21 #2 Share Posted June 21 It would be helpful if you let us know the date of your cruise. If it is a tour with Crystal of Pompeii you will have a guide but more information on your part is helpful. Keith

Jinn Posted June 22 #4 Share Posted June 22 The description looks like the shore exc. I went on 6 years ago on which we did have a guide. Just to be sure send an email to crystaldestinations@crystalcruises.com. Julia
occasional cruising Posted June 22 #5 Share Posted June 22 We have visited Pompeii and Herculaneum a couple of times - they are both fascinating. Try for a tour which goes to Herculaneum first. Smaller than Pompeii, but makes Pompeii easier to appreciate.

Jean Jean, I've done the Pompeii tour with old Crystal twice and in both cases we had a tour escort take us through Pompeii. The same was true with Herculaneum. If you can do the combined tour to see both I recommend it. Since we had done Pompeii twice we did Herculaneum as a individual tour but if you have not seen either I would do both as they are each different experiences. You can write to the shore excursion group at crystaldestinations@crystalcruises.com to verify that there will be an escort in Pompeii and in Herculaneum if you choose the combination. drgigi Posted June 22 Author #7 Share Posted June 22 Thank you all for your timely responses. I feel more confident about the tour to Pompeii but will double check with suggested crystal destinations to be sure nothing has changed since OC. This will be our second and third cruise (btb) on NC and just can't wait. Jean

vistaman Posted June 24 #9 Share Posted June 24 you easily can do that on your own : take the circumvesuviana train : calling both at herculaneum and pompei but mind the heat !!!

We did both, on two separate stops. For Pompeii from Naples, we took a private tour with a small group, formed on our roll call thread (Celebrity). The tour guide took us by train (very crowded) and handed us off to a private guide in actual Pompeii. Then we drove to Positano or Sorrento for lunch, strolling around, and we took the ferry back to Naples. Shops were closing early b/c Italy was in the World Cup finals and they were all going someplace to watch! The closest I’ve ever planned to be back onboard before sailaway, and included the risk of a ferry issue. We all agreed it would be worth the risk! Ferry was docked right next to our ship. Ferry was on time. We were lucky. On our next Med. cruise, we were scheduled to dock south of Herculaneum and we were prepared to take the train, on our own. The day before, the capt. changed our port to Naples and we had to call an audible. Took the train from Naples instead. Both excellent port stops. Not everybody would want to do what we did, at either of those! But for us, they were both perfect.
