Carnival has no plans to enter the river cruise market

Interesting take, while I have never thought of them in this space, this interview makes clear there is not enough juice in the squeeze to interest them.

Given the difficulties (lack of water) river cruising has these days in Europe, I don't think any new players are looking to enter. In the US, the boats would have to be US flagged and that is an automatic loser.

If they ever did, it would be through a subsidiary member of Carnival Corporation and those ships would look nothing like their name brand fleet. I'm glad that Carnival is focusing on scaling back, consolidating and using their resources more efficiently.

 

It seems like the demand we see now for cruising certainly can't last, and the company that plans ahead for that is going to come out stronger for it.

One of the analysts on the recent earnings call used Seabourn as an example. That would be more likely than a mainstream brand like Carnival or Costa. The high cost structure of river cruising is easier to deal with when selling it as a luxury product.

 

If Carnival Corp ever decides to enter that space, it could also just create a new brand. Purchasing an existing line could also be an option.
