Try telling that to anyone who was onboard during it, and take a look at some of the video which shows just how much damage that "not that big of a deal" caused.:rolleyes: Easy to dismiss it if you didn't experience it and weren't one of those taken to the hospital with injuries.

If you mean by your remarks that the ship wasn't in danger of capsizing or something like that, you are right, but I think your choice of wording might have been better.

That interactive site is neat! Thanks! It shows the ship listing port not starboard. Is that correct? I thought it listed right?

 

Also, from reading all the posts about this incident, it seems there are several other incidents of this type of list. Several who experienced listing on other ships/cruiselines didn't receive any compensation and they also mentioned injuries.

 

Is the Crown's list incident more public because of:

 

cell phones

the internet

the large number of passengers it carries

because it is new

because Princess has been in the news recently w/ the Grand & the Star?

 

I'm also wondering why so many more were injured? Is it just a numbers thing, larger ship, more passengers, therefore higher number of injured? Is this incident and its injuries proportional to the other incidents of listing?

It really was a big deal. Though it wasn't the "Titanic", this incident is still nothing to take lightly! If it was enough to throw casino slot machines and even a grand piano, then it was no little deal.

I have sailed on the "Star Clipper" twice (a very nice 4-masted schooner) and when under sail "listed" (I think keel is the correct word) to the point that (sometimes) our silverware would slide off the table. They even have some type of mat runners on the tables to help provide traction for dishes and glasses. My question is this: at what angle would this type of sailing vessel be leaning?

 

My sympathy goes out to all who suffered this event. Sailing on a cruising schooner took a bit of getting used to...even knowing that she is supposed to be moving through the water that way. (I actually learned to enjoy it.) My gut tightens just thinking of what would be like if an unexpected list of 15 degrees happened while I was on a ship designed to remain upright when under way.

A 15 degree tilt like what is illustrated looks pretty bad already, I can see it can do quite a bit of damage to anything unsecured inside the ship already . . .

Thanks for the site. The cabin I've booked is on that side of the ship. I'm always out on the balcony having a "sail-a-way" cocktail. It's a blessing that no one went overboard:eek:

By the way, it is 15 DEGREES not 15 PERCENT.

 

A 15 degree tilt sounds like no big deal but really it is very very dangerous for the occupants inside the ship. Or those who happen to be leaning over the railing taking in the view.

 

Think if you happened to be looking in your suitcase on the ground when the ship listed and knocked you flat and your stateroom TV fell on your head.

 

Or if you were walking by a store and were thrown into the glass causing it to shatter.

 

Or if you were in the pool and thrown out of it onto the concrete.

 

Or if you were on the stairs and thrown off.

 

there are many more scenarios just like this. 15 degrees IS significant and can cause lots of damage.

Does anyone have any pictures of damage or the condition of the ship?

this might also be another way to "put things in perspective". I saw one of a gift shop on board and the place was trashed. Id be curious to see what other areas of the ship might have looked like.

No, ACTUALLY it just proves that the cruisers were very lucky. A lot of other people could have been just as hurt as that poor little girl. If it was no big deal then how did she get so seriously hurt.

 

It is bad. It is unfortunate. But unless you experience something like it, I would hold the judgements at bay.

If it was 15% or 30% it was still a tramatic event for all of us who were aboard.My wife and I were on the Ledo deck andeverything in the room went flying at my wife. If not by the grace of God I caught the T.V. before it landed on her.And if you have never been through somthing like this on a mega cruise ship then please keep your coments to yourself and just pray for those that were hurt both physicaly and mentaly. It will be an ordeal that will not be forgotten.If anyone has any questions about the cruise please feel free to ask.

Please ignore those few yahoos who are apparently so inured to violence that broken bones, severed arteries, hospitalizations, and experiences such as what you have related are "no big deal". They don't speak for the majority of the posters on this board or cruise critic.
