WrenchHeadCruiser Posted August 13, 2006 #2 Share Posted August 13, 2006 Water shoes are highly recommended... Sea Urchins can ruin your day!
Merion_Mom Posted August 13, 2006 #3 Share Posted August 13, 2006 And because it's the end of the summer, they're on sale in all the sporting goods stores right now! (and any other place that carries 'em)
glen tev Posted August 13, 2006 #4 Share Posted August 13, 2006 Not to mention you don't know when some idiot has thrown a bottle in the water which is now broke and sticking up out of the sand.A freind of mine stepped on a bottle, cut open the bottom of his foot and got 12 stiched plus a cast for the entire summer. Not fun. TennisLover Posted August 13, 2006 #5 Share Posted August 13, 2006 Are water shoes a necessity for climbing Dunns River Falls?
leerobbs Posted August 13, 2006 #6 Share Posted August 13, 2006 Yes, as I recall they will not let you climb the falls bare foot.
MiniMom57 Posted August 13, 2006 #7 Share Posted August 13, 2006 DEFINITELY for Dunn's River Falls!!
Jan_In_Maine Posted August 13, 2006 #8 Share Posted August 13, 2006 Good idea for Dunn's Fall as the rocks are very slippery and the water shoes give traction without the heaviness of a sneaker. Jan

Jan Thank you! We'll get them now as they are probably hard to find in January-February!
Sue L Posted August 13, 2006 #10 Share Posted August 13, 2006 Land's End (landsend.com) sells sneaker/water shoes they have the support and construction of a sneaker, they are extremely light weight but they are a water shoe. They are called sea and sport shoes, or something close to that. I have had them for a couple cruises and they were invaluable for some of our excursions. TennisLover Posted August 13, 2006 #11 Share Posted August 13, 2006 SueL - thanks for the tip - great idea, esp as a holiday gift! Can get that done now! Now, how in the world do I estimate what size feet my 11 year old son might have in February????
EggDropErin Posted August 13, 2006 #12 Share Posted August 13, 2006 I recently bought some of the sneaker-type water shoes at JC Penney on sale. I can't remember what brand they were. But they seem rather substantial.
Homebody Posted August 13, 2006 #13 Share Posted August 13, 2006 They are a must for Dunn's. There was a young couple at Dunn's that flat out refused to buy/rent a pair no matter how much everyone in our group tried to tell them that they would be sorry with just flip flops or bare foot. We we not even half way up and the girl was in tears, she was having a real hard time climbing with the flip flops on, and her feet were getting sore without, they ended up getting off halfway. There are a lot of small shells and coral at the water line at Labadee, (at least there was at Hideaway beach) Once you get past that the sand is smooth. MissT Posted August 13, 2006 #14 Share Posted August 13, 2006 When in Cayman, we did the stingray city excursion and beach shoes were not allowed. You can hurt the stingrays by stepping on them and this is easily done when wearing beach shoes.
andnickali Posted August 13, 2006 #15 Share Posted August 13, 2006 Thank you! We'll get them now as they are probably hard to find in January-February! Take my advice and buy them while there is a selection. We bought just prior to our January cruise and all my DH could find for my 9 and 11 yo boys were these very tacky Spiderman water shoes. They had no choice but to wear them.

I bought those for our whole family this year. Not only were they great for climbing the falls but also terrific for the local amusement park too. You can get really soaked on the water rides and it was great to have a pair of shoes that dry out quickly.
beachlover2 Posted August 13, 2006 #17 Share Posted August 13, 2006 I have the same question for the Southern Caribbean, are water shoes needed? I can't decide if I should buy some or not. Thanks!
negc Posted August 13, 2006 #18 Share Posted August 13, 2006 I have the same question for the Southern Caribbean, are water shoes needed? I can't decide if I should buy some or not. Thanks! I'd recommend them whether you go to the southern, eastern or western routes. As someone mentioned there is always the possibility of broken glass, and even the sandiest beaches sometimes have rocks. Besides under that hot Caribbean sand, the beach sand can become very hot so water shoes will help.
CarolinaGirl Posted August 13, 2006 #19 Share Posted August 13, 2006 For the best water shoes, try dive booties. Available at any dive shop. More expensive than aqua shoes, but worth every penny. Very lightweight with a thick skidproof bottom.
cb at sea Posted August 13, 2006 #20 Share Posted August 13, 2006 Buy some, slip them into your beach bag, and if you do need them, they will be there! If you don't, then ignore the little devils!

starr90 Posted August 13, 2006 #22 Share Posted August 13, 2006 Only suggestion for Dunns Rivers falls - do not put money in your water shoe! I lost $20 (lucky person who found it).
