geocruiser Posted September 25, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Hi, I would bring the bug spray. Below is the CDC's web site. On the bottom of the page it tells you what to bring with you for that part of the world (for your health). Have a great trip! http://www.cdc.gov/travel/tropsam.htm Geo
judithbiggs Posted September 25, 2006 #3 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Took the Amazon cruise this past spring. You will love it. They advise you to stay indoors at night, but I would take the mosquito spray with you. I am sure you have the malaria pills to take also. It is hot and could be rainy. An umbrella is a good idea and also light colored and light weight clothing. Also be sure that you have enough clothing while in the Amazon, because the ship cannot take on water, so you are unable to do laundry. You must conserve the water during that time. Have a super time.
Krazy Kruizers Posted September 25, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 25, 2006 DEET!!!! We always take it with us. Took an extra tube when we did the Orinoco - very similar to the Amazon -- hot and buggy.
kakalina Posted September 25, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 25, 2006 We did this cruise last fall, you will love it. As everyone suggested bring DEET, although there will be staff waiting to spray you with Off as you disembark in ports in the Amazon. Be certain to bring some very light long sleeved slacks/pants and shirts/blouses. It made all the difference for us. We were not bitten even once. The sun is very strong and you will want to put a strong sunblock on your face ( if you are like DH you will need it on the top of your head ;) ). A hat is a necessity. You will visit a marvelous town Boca de Valeria. It would be wonderful if you bring some crayons or small toys for the children there. Many of us gave them the chocolates we saved from our pillows. Those that had been there before were prepared with lotions and shampoos, all kinds of thngs. It was an amazing adventure. Try the piranah soup when the offer it in the PG. rkacruiser Posted September 25, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 25, 2006 As kakalina said, be prepared for your visit to Boca da Valeria. The children will be delighted with small gifts and candy. Also, take ashore a small number of dollar bills. There will be photo opportunities of the native people and they do expect to be given a dollar bill for allowing you to take their picture. There is a small school in the village and some passengers had brought along school supplies and gave them to the teacher at the school. Reportedly, this was greatly appreciated. Have a wonderful trip! And, expect some beautiful sunsets as you sail along the Amazon.
serendipity1499 Posted September 25, 2006 #7 Share Posted September 25, 2006 We also took the cruise that JudithBiggs was on..It was wonderful.. Suggest you also take a lightweight hat as the sun is very strong! I agree with taking small toys etc. to Boca de Valeria for the children.. We went to the $$$ store & bought crayons, colored pencils & pens, stickers, hair clips, toys, tooth brushes, combs etc...Also went to Staples & purchased a large package of post it notes (less expensive than the $$ store) & gave them out with the pencils & pens..Be prepared to be mobbed by the kids as soon as you get onto the Island.. We purchased some lovely wood carvings for about $5.00 there.. Hope you are going to the Boi-Bumba festival in Parintins..It was wonderful! Sterns has a shuttle that will take you out to the Hotel in Manaus..They have a nice little Zoo at that Hotel..Sterns took us out to the Hotel...However after touring the Zoo we purchased a Cockatoo Sculpture from Amsterdam Sauer (They were more willing to deal)...Their shuttle driver took us back to the Opera House & waited for us for over an hour & then took us back to the ship..We never expected him to wait for us.. Hope you have a wonderful time..:) Enjoy your cruise...Betty
2bout2c Posted September 25, 2006 #8 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Unless you do hand washing of undies. Take extra. Water conservation and it's HOT. So I found I was changing what I was wearing after a trip ashore.

Tricia724 Posted September 26, 2006 #10 Share Posted September 26, 2006 Jsipes....we have a Cruise Critic meeting set up on this cruise. There are about 26 of us doing the full Amazon cruise. If you are interested, we would love to have you join us. We are meeting on Friday, Sept. 29, at 11:30 am in the Hudson Room. Aussie Gal (Jennie) has made all the arrangements, but she is already on the ship sailing down from Vancouver. Most of the Cruise Critic group sailed from either Vancouver or Seattle, but there are a few of us boarding Thursday in Los Angeles. If you would like to meet some of your fellow travelers, just show up and introduce yourself and we'll be happy to welcome you to the group. It's going to be hot, hot, hot for the entire trip. We're taking lots of cotton, lightweight clothes. The ship does have a self-service laundry in addition to the ship's laundry, so you will have the opportunity to have clothes washed during the cruise (although not while in the Amazon.) Hope to see you onboard. Pat
