Hotels in New Orleans??

Does anyone have a good suggestion on a hotel to stay in the day before a cruise? We are cruising April 1-8 on the sun and will be arriving in New Orleans on the 31st. I want a place that is within walking distance of good places to site see, but also not that far from the port, maybe just a short cab ride. (not sure if this is possible) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We recently returned from New Orleans. We stayed at the Drury Inn about 2 blocks to the French Quarter and about 15 minute walk to the river which is were the cruise ships come in. We walked past the cruise ship terminal. This would not be more than a 10 minute cab ride. All along Canal street which borders the French Quarter there are all kinds of Hotels from the major chains to smaller local venues. and again this would be about a 10 minute cab ride. The French Quarter is very interesting, many great places to see and dine. Weather in April will be very nice, early FEb is was mid 70's.

I'm from New Orleans and always stay at the Hilton Riverfront. They have a riverfront trolley that goes from the hilton to Canal Street to the French Quarter (several stops). I don't know how quickly the trolley is running, but you can always walk from the hilton to the Aquarium and on the "moonwalk" to the French Quarter... It is a good mile walk but lots to see and since it is along the river, a nice walk. I believe the Hilton is also the closest to the port.

We stayed at the Marriott at the river walk. Right across the street was the cruise ship terminal. About a 15 min walk to the french quarters.

Included in the price was a breakfast the next morning and it was great.

We loved it here, gorgeous hotel right on the corner of bourban street, rooftop pool, special "sleep kit" in the room

(dvd, sleepy spray for your sheets, earplugs and eye patch) top of the line tolietries beautiful four poster beds that were SO comfortable with duvets, great location too, we walked around the FQ in the evening and got beignets and coffee for breakfast from around the corner post your email address and I will send you some photos, I LOVED this hotel and it was not a bad price.

Another good bet is the Monte Leone (sp?) Wonderful old hotel on Royal Street. It's close to everything, and you can go right next door (Mr. B's) and have some great barbecued shrimp! Cab to port. Walk to Bourbon St. and rest of French Quarter. Stay some extra nights!!!

There are LOTS of hotels in the areas you are looking for. Depending on how much you want to walk you should look either in the French Quarter (where most of the sites you'll want to go are, along with many good restaurants) or the central Business District (CBD) which is closer to the port (by a few blocks) but farther from many of the tourist sites. You can walk fromt the CBD to the French Quarter - it's not a hard walk, but it is a little ways away. Cost wise, the French Quarter is usually a little more expensive, but you can sometimes find some good prices.

I'm a local, but when I stay downtown to party I love staying at the Monteleone - great location.

I was looking up information on the airport shuttle. Will it only take you to CBD area or will it take you to any of the hotels in the general area?

I think it goes to most hotels in the French Quarter or CBD, but I'm not sure about surrounding areas. I know some of the Kenner hotels have their own vans.

I second the Astor Crowne Plaza. We stayed here at the end of January for a couple of nights and loved it. The location is perfect. On Bourbon street, but at the end so you don't have to worry about any noise at all. Acme Oyster house is around the corner in the back and has excellent food. Make sure you go early as they get crowded really quickly. We were there at 11am and were the first ones seated. By 11.15 the place was packed and a line had started.

The hotel staff was friendly and the rooms clean. The only problem was that the ice machine didn't work on every floor. Some floors were out of soda, so you had to go to a couple of floors to get ice and soda if you wanted it.

Trolley stop is outside in front and it's walking distance to the waterfront. You could even walk to the cruise terminal if you don't mind walking a little bit. Not sure how much you were looking to spend but it is still the "Mystery hotel" on Bookit.com and is listed at $109.00 for the night that you are going to be there.

Here is a list of some haunted hotels in New Orleans, if you are interested in that sort of thing or just want to avoid them. :p http://www.neworleansgetaways.com/hauntedhotels.htm

If you are any kind of gambler & belong to Harrah's Total Rewards call them & ask if they can put you up in their hotel, it is right near the cruise terminal & the Riverwalk Mall. That is what I did in December. They gave me 2 nights FREE. Good luck with your search....

I've stayed at several hotels in New Orleans.

The last was the W Hotel, which was wonderful and very contemporary. It's within walking distance of alot of the things you would want to do.

The Chateau Sonesta and Royal Sonesta and really nice too and sometimes run a special discount rate on Expedia.

I stayed at the St. James hotel before Katrina and it was really nice, don't know what the difference would be since the hurricane.

Service in the hotels everywhere in town isn't what it used to be, so take that into account. The town is doing the best they can, but if your workers don't have a place to live --- well then you don't have workers to provide the services that we have grown accustom to in the past.
