We've sailed on Princess twice because of the open seating so I'm really excited that Carnival is trying it. Do you know how long this trial period is expected to last? When we booked the Legend, our travel agent didn't give us the option of open seating so we took early seating. Will they offer it later or once we board?

 

The only thing missing from this ship that I'm going to miss is the big movie screen by the pool area. Loved, loved, loved that!

Less than 2 weeks to sail for us. Can't wait. We chose open seating also. I hope they get the kinks worked out. We did open seating on Princess and the longest we had to wait was about 15 minutes one time. And this was a larger ship.

The first night, expect a long line. Each couple/family will need to be escorted to their table, so it takes longer. On a couple of nights, they were a few minutes late opening the door, so a long line formed. However, once they opened the door, the line moved pretty quickly.

 

This happens on ships with two dining rooms, also, but the lines are much shorter as there aren't as many people waiting.

What I need to know is, what if there is an emergency at home and family needs to contact us, my husband and I both have cell phones but I'm not sure how sketchy the service will be. My MIL was diagnosed with cancer recently and is undergoing treatment, SIL will be staying with her but God forbid something should happen I would like the family to be able to get a hold of us on board the ship. I would greatly appreciate any help or direction I can get.

I think your email idea is probably the best and most cost effective way to stay in touch and I'll call my cell phone provider and ask about roaming charges and reception at the ports where we'll be. Thank you for your well wishes, it's kind of a bittersweet time for us all, as my son and his wife just had their first child, my first grandchild and then we find out abuot the cancer. I felt a little quilty at first for going away but I think my husband really needs it right now so I for one am determined to have a great time.

I can't help you much, but I do know that there were some tournaments. There was definitely a slots tournament and a blackjack tournament - one of the guys in our group played in both. If I'm not mistaken, there was also a Texas Hold'em tournament one evening.

Usually, on the first night out, they have $3 tables. The next day, the lowest limit you'll be able to find is $5. I have been on some ships where they have actually lowered the limits back to $3 for another night, but that's not the norm.

 

I also know that the limits are lower on Roulette and Craps on the first night as well, but don't know by how much.

 

As far as Texas Hold'em goes, check your Capers every day. They usually have some kind of tournament going on most nights. Not sure what the buy-in is, or if it's no limit. Most times, the Texas Hold'em is a computerized dealer. Occasionally they will have a live dealer game going on. But from what I have heard, those seats fill up FAST!

 

We're on the Legend for a second time in just a few weeks. It's a great ship, with a cool itinerary. You'll have a blast!

Also - is there satellite tv on the boat? More specifically is it Direct TV. I'm a football junkie. Gotta watch my Browns in big game vs Steelers - luckily that one is a national game. I assume I'll be able to watch that one b/c national coverage. My poor Bengals fan friend thinks that if there is Direct tv then he'll be able to watch that game as well. Any ideas? I can't miss football ... but I'm sure I'll deal w/ it.

I'm beginning to worry that the Carnival anytime dinning is going to turn into another big complainers forum. We have been on NCL four times and have yet to wait more than 3 minutes to be seated yet there are constant whiners about long waits etc.

 

I'm sure there may be times that large parties will have to wait for a table much as they would at any shore restaurant but folks, don't be afraid of the anytime dinning. For those that don't like to follow the crowd it is wonderful !!!!!:) :)

No Direct TV. There are network feeds from Denver, so if the Browns/Steelers game is on CBS, then you should be okay. Your Bengals fan friend is probably out of luck, though. He'll have to set his DVR and watch it when he gets home.

Hello, please forgive me if these questions have already been answered in another post, however I am having a hard time getting through 52 PAGES of posts! I am a first time cruiser and I have a few questions about the Legend.

 

~How bad was the smoking outdoors, can you smell it indoors? A lot of smokers?

 

~Any comments about the KidsCamp place? I have an 8 year old traveling with me, and i didn't know if he would like it at all. Is it mostly for younger kids, or would he enjoy a couple of hours there?

 

~Should I book excursions through Carnival or wait to get of the ship and book them directly with the locals? Pros vs. Cons.....any thoughts?

 

~Anyone with experience being on the Panorama Deck? We're staying in cabin #8154......room for four with a balcony...any comments?

 

~We don't really need soda, so shouldn't I skip the Soda Card? What beverages are included?

 

~What is the deepest the pools get?

The only time I noticed the smell of smoke was when I was in the Casino. This wasn't every time I was in the Casino, just occassionally.

 

Your son may enjoy Camp Carnival for some of the activities. I know both of my daughters have always enjoyed it. They don't go for every activity though. (My girls didn't go on my Legend cruise, but if you check out my review of the Imagination you'll get some info on Camp. The link is in my signature. I also have a Legend review in my signature as well. Both have pictures.)

 

I've booked with both Carnival and private operators for excursions. If I were you I'd check out reviews from other sailings as well as the port of call boards.

 

I was on the Panorama deck, and loved it! I'm sure you will too.

 

Beverages included are: various kinds of juice, milk, chocolate milk, lemonade, iced tea, fruit punch.

 

I'm not sure how deep the pool was, but I don't think it was more than 6 feet.

I don't think the pool is more than 4-4.5 feet deep. They are the same depth all around. Here is a picture of people in the pool:

 

 

The two in front are my friends, and are standing on the bottom. The are both tall (man - 6'4", woman 5'9"); however, as you can see, the water doesn't even come up to their shoulders. The others you can see in the background are probably "ducking down" a bit to cool off.

Miss Summers, I strongly recommend going to the ports of call threads and looking at what people say for the independent shore excursions. There are many reputable ones out there and they are much cheaper than Carnival's. They also tend to be much less crowded. Some will ask you for a deposit and others won't have you pay anything until you actually show up for the activity. I know some folks are nervous that they won't return to the ship in time, but that rarely happens...you have to remember that they make their living based upon successful tours, so they are very in tune to the timing. When we did the Legend, we did all independent tours and they were wonderful!

And Panorama was great! We were in 8169....opposite side of the ship. We had the extended balcony....very nice! It's a great location because you can just walk up a flight of stairs and be in all the Lido deck action.

Have a great time! We sure did...and will again next year!:D

When a ship is moving in heavy seas, she moves in all 3 axises. Roll, Pitch and Yaw.

 

Me.......if the seas get rough, you will find me as far forward and as high up as I can get.......enjoying the "motion of the ocean" and the sheer power and majesty that is the sea. :)

Wow this is pretty big news that I had not heard about and we are leaving soon. Glad that I read these boards always before we cruise. Also surprised given magnitude of this that there has not been much more discussion about this topic. So....

 

We will be on Legend July 13. Group of 9 including four adults and five kids aged 8 to 17. We're set for a big table with all of us at the 5:45 seating to accomodate the younger ones in our group. I think our inclination at this point is to keep the 5:45 seating and not move to open seating - that way we know we have a table for all of us and if we decide to skip the 5:45 a time or two, we can always stand in line for a table at open seating or go to buffet.

 

Has anyone switched and signed up for open seating who will be on Legend after this new policy is implemented at end of June? Or is everyone waiting to hear how it goes?? Following up on that....

 

Anyone who is cruising on Legend after the new policy is implemented, PLEASE post a note about your impressions on the new dining policy as soon as you can so those of us who will be following in your pioneering footsteps can obtain the value of your wisdom!

No problem...

 

 

Roll: Side to side as you face the bow (or stern). Like the floor (deck) is tilting beneath your feet.

 

Pitch: Up and down, rising and falling vertically. Think of a fast elevator.

 

Yaw: A little harder......lateral (as apposed to rotational) side-to side movement. Caused as the end of the ship (fore or aft) moves from side to side. Generally speaking, yaw is only really felt (on large vessels) in very heavy sea conditions.

We got off the Legend on Aug 3rd and we did the traditional late seating but we sat at breakfast the last day w/a couple who did open seating. They said they didn't request open seating but that is what they got. They said they went all different times and were always seated at a table for two and they missed meeting other people at dinner. I would think they could have requested a larger table. They never made reservations. They had the same servers every night which they liked. They said they noticed that if they went to dinner closer to 6 or 8 the food was hotter than if they dined in between those times. Tips are automatically put on you cc, don't think you have a choice as far as I know.
