Coolest Thing You've Seen at Sea

With all the "Favorite" and "Best" threads on this board, here's one for you.

What's the coolest, most memorable thing you've seen while at sea?

Here are my three:

Sailing past St. Thomas at night. We could see an island approaching but weren't sure what it was. Then as we passed, we made out that it was St. Thomas. We could make out the tramway, Mountaintop and the basic outline of the island by its silhouette. Really cool.

Having a huge pod of Pacific White Side Dolphins sail with us on our way back to Vancouver. Amazing. I have pictures that show up to 30 breaking the water at any one time. I knew it was special when crewmembers were scurrying to take pictures.

Sailing through a thunderstorm on the open sea. Nothing like sitting on your verandah (dry) watching the lightning light up the sky. It's almost surreal.

I remember the approach to St Thomas, and I agree, what an entrance!

Before I say what, let me preface by saying that before taking my 1st cruise in 2003, I never even considered the possibility, and part of the reason that I love it so much is all of the cool things I've seen, and the experiences connected with those cruises.

If I had to pick only one, I'd say that it was snorkeling with the stingrays at Grand Cayman. Now, I know that may be a bit passe', but in my experience, certainly ONE of the coolest things I've done & seen!

it was on our Legend cruise to nowhere back in '02...we splurged and had an aft wrap suite and one night after the midnight show, we came back to our cabin , stepped out on the balcony and saw this gorgeous full moon!!

i took pictures but they don't do it justice....we will always have that memory of the full moon at 1am...right in front of our balcony...how romantic is that???

Two funnel clouds at 6:30 in the morning. DH woke us up to show us and we all grabbed our cameras/ That was the preface to a 24 hour horrendous storm that ended with a 72 foot "rogue wave".

Sailing past an active Volcano on our Med cruise this past March, at night, pitch black outside, but from miles away we could see the hot orange lava pouring down the side of the volcano. It was simply amazing, a sight I'll never forget!

Second, watching a helicopter hover next to the ship as they had an emergency evacuation. Incredible.

Also, on our Miracle cruise, the ship left very late, it was dark by the time we were on our way out to sea. The Coast Guard ships that were escorting us (4 of them) decided that it was time to cut loose and have some fun. We had an aft wraparound balcony, sat out there and watched those CG boats speeding through the water, jumping the waves, racing each other, zipping around each other having a total blast. Just then, we went under the bridge, and it felt so close I thought we could touch it.

Watching Sea Birds fly around the ship at 3:00am while sitting on our balcony, swooping in, chirping away at night time, flying right past our balcony. It was surreal to see such beautiful birds flying around at night time.

Sailing up the Mississippi river, surrounded by dense fog, sitting on the balcony, hearing the sounds from the banks of the river, but not being able to see anything because of the fog. Again, surreal and the feeling in the air is something I won't ever forget.

Do you have any stills or video of the wave? :D

Chiming in for St. Thomas. Sat on my balcony for over an hour as we approached. Even though it was dark it was a beautiful sight.

I just got back from a message having a glass of wine on my balcony, I was so relaxed I thought I was watching the sun come up wait what time is it, thats not the sun thats the moon it was so bright so beautiful I was disoriented for a moment I sat there for at least an hour just gazing.

the glaciers in glacier bay in alsaka. The ship stops right in front of the prettist blue ice you ever saw in your life and you are watching it and all of a sudden you here a crash a piece of ice just hit the water a sound I will never forget.

We were at sea during a thunder and lightning storm my family was sitting on the upper deck looking out to sea. We saw lightning strike down over another cruise ship and it looked like a direct hit it was pretty cool

My kids saw a whale.

I didn't get out there in time to see it, but the captain announced it, so I guess it was unusual.

The dolphins around the ship in Galveston.

As we pulled out they were really working the area where the boat had been. I am guessing that fish may gather in the shade under the ship.

And seeing on one side of the ship incredibly black clouds and rain and on the other side bright blue sky and sunshine.

The flying fish are really cool and I would love to see sea turtles or a pod of dolphins!

Sitting on the aft on the Lido, having our Daily Cheeseburger, we sailed past a small squall .... and a rainbow formed that looked like it ended on the stern of our ship!! I have a picture but can't get to it from here. Will post it if I can find instructions on How To.

Our 11 day Hawaiian cruise included a stop at Fanning Island, which took 2 days to reach. There was nothing in sight but water for two days out and the 2 days back. But at night it was pitch black and I never saw so many stars. We saw the most awesome shooting star I have ever seen. It was huge.

I have also seem many rainbows and double rainbows from our aft balconies as we left Caribbean ports. And dolphins leaping out of the water in Galveston bay.

Whales along the inside passage on our way to Vancouver. They were EVERYWHERE; the captain came on and told us in all his years he had never seen anything like it! I have some of it on video, but no stills. I have to say that other than the sunrises and sunsets, nothing compares to the amount of beautiful scenes I had a chance to witness in Alaska:

Davidson Glacier

I agree with DonnaCruz about the glacier bay. It is amazing! I remember waking up hearing the announcements in the hallways and wondering what was going on. I peaked out the curtain and literally gasped. I yanked the curtain back which woke my husband up and stood on our balcony in the freezing cold in my pajamas. I was in awe...like a kid on Christmas morning. I will never forget the cracking sounds (sounded like a shotgun in the distance), watching the ice sliding down, and huge chunks hitting the water making waves. Gorgeous!!!
