Thanks, nitnee, for offering to answer questions from folks traveling into and out of Philadelphia. I'm sure the "best cheesesteak" arguement could continue ad infinitum. Maybe folks should try all of them and then decide.

I think I would gain more weight from 7 days in Philadelphia than 7 days on a cruise ship! :eek:

And don't forget the hot pretzels. I assume they still sell them? I haven't been to Philadelphia in years other than to visit the Flower Show in the spring.

Philadelphia has great museums, right now King Tut is at the Art Museum tickets needed in advance. Of course all the historic places are a must see.

There are so many great restaurants that it could take a year to visit them all. You can also sample many types of food in Reading Terminal at 11th and Arch. www.Philly.com has many listings of things to do and places to go.

Actually, King Tut is at the Franklin Institute http://www2.fi.edu/ - through Sept. 30, so time for cruisers! Also see http://www.kingtut.org/home

 

The reviews have been mixed . . .

If you are able to arrive a day early, between the Historical area, Art Museum, Zoo, you will have plenty to keep busy.

 

And of course the Philadelphia diet: Cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, Tastykakes, and for the ones willing to try a true S.Eastern PA area food there is always Scrapple.

Our family went to the King Tut exhibit on July 5th and were very disappointed. The famous mask, which is used to promote the exhibition in print and on the internet and is reproduced in paint on the front steps of the Franklin Institute, is not part of this tour, which comes pretty close to bait and switch advertising. There are some interesting things, but it was terribly overcrowded so it was hard to really take your time and enjoy them (I got hit by baby strollers twice - don't know why they allowed them in). And the exhibit doesn't really fit in with the rest of the museum. I missed the exhibition the last time it was in the country and still feel like I haven't seen it.

Someone asked about the traffic/weather in AC in October... traffic will be almost nonexistent. Once Labor Day is gone, so is the beach traffic. Expect about one hour of travel from center city. Weather can vary wildly in October. You might get a beautiful day in the mid 60s-70s or it could be cold and raining. But the "beauty" of AC is that you never have to go outside.

 

For anyone just looking to get a quick "tourist" activity in Philly, there are horse drawn carriage rides through the historic district. You can get a ride from the area around Independence Mall (6th and Chestnut Street). There are also the "ride the duck" tours. This bus/boat gives another tour and also drives into the river and floats you around the waterfront area. (I much prefer the horses, though the ducks will give you your own "quacker"). If you are in town around Halloween, try an evening Ghost tour.

 

I agree with the comment that the Tut exhibit is not as impressive as I had hoped.

 

Also, the Independence Hall area and the Rocky Steps (at the Art Musuem) are not really close...certainly not walking distance...especially if you are dragging your luggage around!

Also, there is a square ( I believe it is called Franklin Square) behind the new Constitution Center for those who like mini golf or merry go rounds. If you go to the Museums on the Parkway, there are some neat fountains along the way. Across the street form City hall is all large oversized game pieces, bingo-monopoly(the wheelbarrel, iron)-chess-parchesse etc. There is the clothespin and LOVE statue.

Yes do stop at the Reading terminal market. Bassets ice cream is to die for and there are many baked goods from the Amish.

Just back from Vegas, Wow! it was hot!!,thanks for all the info,Ok lets see rent a car after the cruise dont gamble in Pilly. wait tell we get to Atantic City,we got to have a Cheesesteak w/wiz:cool: not save to drive to "Pat's Or Gino's place or is it:rolleyes: got to see the Liberty Bell is there a place close by here to have a Cheesesteak:confused:

Hi, We will be cruiseing on the Empress in late Oct.After are cruise will be renting a car and driving to Atlantic City.How is the Traffic,and the weather that time of the year? We love to gamble is there any close by casino in phil?

 

It will take about 75 minutes to drive from Airport to AC. No traffic in Oct. From PHL, take 95 North to Walt Whitman Bridge, follow signs to Atlantic City via Atlantic City Expressway. Casinos in PA are basically slots only....if thats your thing, skip AC. If not, ride down.

Hey, Rocky managed to do it in training and even went to the "Italian" Market too.

The bad part is that there is no easy way to get from Independence Hall to the Art Museum steps using public transportation. You need to use the hop on and off tourist bus . . . and I'm blanking on the name.

If you drive to AC, park in a casino lot, not one of the private lots. Casino lots are much cheaper.

If you drive to AC, park in a casino lot, not one of the private lots. Casino lots are much cheaper.

 

Also, if you sign up for the casino's card some offer free parking with just showing your card and others offer discount. It takes but 10 minutes and saves money.

It's called Independence Mall. You can also see the Liberty Bell as well as the NAtional Constitution Center and the US mint
