BA-lunch in La Boca or Puerto Madero

We are taking a 7 hour tour in Buenos Aires and we have a choice of two different neighborhoods to have our lunch: La Boca or Puerto Madero. Which one should we take?

Also, which tango show should we attend? Our tour guide recommends several: Esquina Carlos Gardel, La Ventana, Michelangelo, El Querandi and Che Tango. Any suggestions?

For lunch: Puerto Madero

Tango show: Esquina Carlos Gardel (if you like Piazola music: Piazola)

For lunch, it depends on whether you are interested in the food or the experience. Puerto Madero is an area that has been built up as a leisure destination since the late 1990s. It has one of the best restaurants in BA to try the great steak (bife de lomo is a rib eye and fabulous) and the Malbec (all brands are good), called Cabana de las Lilas.

La Boca is one of the oldest neighborhoods in BA. It's the one with all the different colored houses. It's much more fun to walk around and explore than PM. But I don't have a specific restaurant I remember. La Boca was founded by Italian emigrants (actually, Italian is the dominant background of Argentines today, not Spanish) and Argentines love to eat, so I can't remember ever having a bad meal there.

Since you're on a tour you'll mostly likely take a run through La Boca regardless of whether you eat there or not. As such, my vote would be for Puerto Madero. Many of the restaurants have outdoor seating and it is quite pleasant to sit out by the water during the day and have a nice break from running around.

There is an excellent run down of 6 shows on tripadvisor It is a recent review August 1/07 written by Glukos It also gives current prices and web sites for these prices. The Buenos Aires forum on trip advisor is excellent for following the trends etc and seeing the range of options.

Have lunch in Puerto Madero at La Cabana Las Lilas! We had the best steak we have ever had there last year and plan to go to lunch when we are there at the end of a cruise in January. It absolutely melts in your mouth and the side dishes are amazing. This restaurant is actually one of the 1000 places in the book "1000 Places to See Before You Die"

It is located at Alicia Moreau de Justo 516

If you are in BA more than 1 day also try Gran Cafe Tortoni, 825 Avenida de Mayo near Plaza de Mayo. http://www.cafetortoni.com.ar

By the way, what tour company are you using? We are looking for one just for the day to pick us up at our ship, take us where we want to go in BA then to the airport in the evening.
