laohann Posted September 14, 2007 #1 Share Posted September 14, 2007 ;) Just wondering if anyone has bought any alcohol either on the ship or in port to bring home and can we take it on the plane or pack in luggage? I will be on the Grand after Thanksgiving & would like to bring some home for the holidays
arizonaperson Posted September 14, 2007 #2 Share Posted September 14, 2007 If you are asking how much alcohol you can bring on the plane the answer is in your carry on 3 oz or less. In your checked baggage if it is international(bought) whatever the amt is that you can bring back in to the USA. Also in checked luggage make sure it is bubblewrapped and wrapped really well(obviously), maybe even put it in a big ziploc bag, just incase it gets broken it won't be all over your clothes or anyone elses it comes into contact with. Pam in CA Posted September 14, 2007 #3 Share Posted September 14, 2007 ;) Just wondering if anyone has bought any alcohol either on the ship or in port to bring home and can we take it on the plane or pack in luggage?I will be on the Grand after Thanksgiving & would like to bring some home for the holidays The answer is: you can bring only 3-oz bottles that will fit into a 1-qt ZIPloc bag in your carry-on. You can bring as many as you want in your checked luggage but should pack it very carefully. Be sure to check the weight limit and number of bags you can check in for your airline. In many airports, there is a 2nd security screening at the gate so that even if you buy duty-free liquor or perfume onboard a flight and you're in transit to the next flight, it will be confiscated. (The airlines have a clear warning about this on the flight even while selling liquor and perfume.) This mostly applies to international flights. This really depends on where you buy the alcohol, and whether it is a nonstop flight where you only pass through security ONCE! In San Juan, you can buy up to four bottles of alcohol (under a certain proof) at the duty free liquor store which located in the airport after the TSA screening. They even provided a nice carry on tote bag. Non stop, and duty free liquor store after TSA screening is okay... Peter
paul929207 Posted September 14, 2007 #5 Share Posted September 14, 2007 If you buy booze at a duty free shop after passing thru security, you can carry it on (same for soda, water, etc bought past security). But remember if you change planes and have to go thru security again, you CANNOT bring it thru security in your carryon.
drakes2 Posted September 14, 2007 #6 Share Posted September 14, 2007 Can you purchase wine and alcohol in the duty free in San Juan to take onto your cruise. I bought some last year after our cruise to bring home and yes, they were in nice tote bags but I had to lug them all the way to Canada. coiran Posted September 14, 2007 #7 Share Posted September 14, 2007 To answer the original question - you can bring as much as you can put into two 50 pound pieces of luggage per person. Ron
Kelge Posted September 14, 2007 #8 Share Posted September 14, 2007 Since the changed the rules and you can no longer bring more then 3 oz on board (well, unless you buy it after security), has anyone ever checked wine in a separate bag (like those special wine bags, ususally with styrofoam inserts, that hold 4-6 bottles)? Is this a bad idea? We've backed them in our suitcase before, coming home from Napa, but think maybe a special bag/case is a good idea. Thoughts? m steve Posted September 14, 2007 #9 Share Posted September 14, 2007 Most airlines don't want 151 rum in any carry on or checked bag because of the flamability factor. That is for your own safety. American Airlines had different rules than other lines when leaving St. Thomas. You can always put the boxes in your suitcases and take the dirty laundry in your carry on. Just watch the weight limits.
sultan_sfo Posted September 14, 2007 #10 Share Posted September 14, 2007 Two weeks ago (Sep 2007) in Hong Kong, United had a carry-on security check at the boarding gate. They took away the sealed water bottle we had purchased right in front of the boarding gate! The duty free items had been delivered by the store to the gate in a sealed bag which was allowed./Sultan If you buy booze at a duty free shop after passing thru security, you can carry it on (same for soda, water, etc bought past security). cactusrose Posted September 15, 2007 #12 Share Posted September 15, 2007 You can't always bring as much as you like duty free even if it is packed in your checked on luggage. If you are traveling from overseas, customs will limit the amount of duty free alcohol you can bring into the US. It's normally 1 liter per person. Officially you will pay duty on anything above that limit but very often if you have one extra bottle they won't require you to pay.
coiran Posted September 15, 2007 #13 Share Posted September 15, 2007 OK - I just checked the TSA regulations and you are allowed 5 litres per person in your checked luggage, although I don't know howthey can check.
spongerob Posted September 15, 2007 #14 Share Posted September 15, 2007 We almost always find that any checked bag containing liquor has been opened by the inspectors. That inspection has also been the only reason we've had delayed bags. Everythng else has arrived with us, but the liquor bag has sometimes been delayed. True, you will pay duty if you carry more than the limit, but the value of the duty is so small that customs usually doesn't bother with the paperwork. Murphey Posted September 15, 2007 #16 Share Posted September 15, 2007 We fly with cases of wine all the time......whether to take on a cruise or take for gifts or for business. Never a problem. When we check in, they usually ask if it's wine, we say yes, they slap a "fragile" sticker on it and off it goes. Yes, it's in a shipping box. Also, the 10% discount that Princess gives you for purchases of 3 or more bottles will basically cover any duties imposed;) . What Spongerob says is normally the case. If you do go over on purchases by a couple bottles customs will usually just wave you through.

We didnt lie on the form for customs. The form asks what you are declaring and the value, but not how many. So on the form I put "alcohol" and "$95". The agent never blinked, and we got stamped and thru customs in about 2 minutes. The airline did open the suitcase at security, but they just glanced and zipped it back up. This was the second time that we loaded up on alcohol for our bar back home. None of the bottles broke since we packed them in the cardboard wine boxes we got onboard. We put each box in a plastic bag, then put the boxes between layers of clothes and they were fine. We plan to do the same thing next month when we go again.
