CDRMark Posted October 18, 2007 #26 Share Posted October 18, 2007 While the particulars seem weird (HAL's left hand not knowing what the right hand has done, again), it seems that there is no harm/no foul here (yet). IF OP does NOT get the guarantee, THEN there is need to seek out he law firm of Dewey, Cheatem & Howe. Not before. Cheers:) Mark
Solo Cruiser Posted October 18, 2007 Author #27 Share Posted October 18, 2007 Thanks to everyone for their comments and concern. HAL called the TA today with a cabin assignment. Small upgrade from and H to a GG and I couldn't be more pleased.

doorcountydi Posted October 18, 2007 #29 Share Posted October 18, 2007 Our whole party of 6 was offered a deal of sorts in Alaska--$100 credit ($600, 3 cabins) to go down one level. Same exact rooms, just one flight down...didn't see a reason not to. They were inside cabins and the $100 probably went right into the casino  , but it wasn't really a downgrade to me. Not even sure why they needed to do it, unless a whole reunion of people needed same-floor rooms..?? Diane

Gonzo70 Posted October 18, 2007 #31 Share Posted October 18, 2007 I have never understood why people gamble with guarantees. If you lucky you will do well, but if you are unlucky you will cruise feeling bad. I love guarantees and do them everytime they are offered. I am aware that I may very well end up without an upgrade and would be perfectly happy in any cabin in the lowest category of the guarantee. People should only book guarantees if they are not picky about what cabin they are in as guarantees have the great advantage of usually being significantly cheaper and also of having the best shot at a free upgrade. One time I was upgraded from an interior stateroom to a Delxue Balcony on RCL! Anyways, I am glad the OP wound up with a cabin they are happy with. Have a great cruise! :)

Cruising-along Posted October 18, 2007 #33 Share Posted October 18, 2007 Thanks to everyone for their comments and concern. HAL called the TA today with a cabin assignment. Small upgrade from and H to a GG and I couldn't be more pleased. I'm so happy for you that everything turned out fine and you even got an upgrade. We book guarantees too and have never been disappointed. If we'd gotten an "offer" like you got from HAL we would have just turned it down and kept what we had, no harm done. :)
Jade13 Posted October 18, 2007 #34 Share Posted October 18, 2007 When you have an assigned cabin number, I would think that you are even firmer ground legally, should it come to litigation.quote]   Litigation because one does not like their cabin? LegalSailor Posted November 4, 2007 #35 Share Posted November 4, 2007 When you have an assigned cabin number, I would think that you are even firmer ground legally, should it come to litigation.quote]   Litigation because one does not like their cabin? This came up when I was sailing on the Ryndam before I got married. I was approached by a man and his wife at our table (discussion went to career, and they found out I was a lawyer) about their booking. They booked a balcony, and wound up getting one, albeit one category down. I persuaded them that litigation was a non-idea, and that I found it idiotic to argue for litigation. I talked to the line for them and got them a $500 shipboard credit for booking their next cruise. I would advise not pursuing a legal option, but rather be calm yet forceful and talk to the line and negotiate a deal for credit. Cheers!

Cheers! PERFECT!! Glad it worked out! What is the point of a GUAR cabin if not an upgrade!? I personally have not heard of a DOWNGRADE??!! We have always been happy either way GUAR or our select!;)
LegalSailor Posted November 5, 2007 #37 Share Posted November 5, 2007 From my understanding after talking with the Cruise Director and HAL, the reason for the downgrade was that a group wanted to book 15 balcony cabins next to each other for a 50th Anniversary cruise, and HAL felt obliged to honor the couple who had sailed over 75 different cruises with them. When I explained that the other couple still felt cheated out of a balcony room that they paid in full for, they applied the $400 difference to their bill and offered a $500 shipboard credit. I know it seems weird that this would happen, as it never had come up before in my talks with friends and associates who love to cruise, but then if strange new things didn't happen with some regularity, like might get too boring! onthegogirl Posted November 5, 2007 #38 Share Posted November 5, 2007 Just another reason to not book a "Guarantee"... I book a guarantee for the class of cabin I want. If I get upgraded, wonderful.:) If I was offered a downgrade, I would evaluate it. In any case, I decided before hand that I would be happy with the cabin class I booked. I have never had a particular stateroom that I fell in love with. If that happens, then I would try and book it. I know that there are folks out there that have their favorites. Booking a guarantee does add another layer of excitement to the anticipation of a cruise. ;) Carole
SD.Cruiser Posted November 5, 2007 #39 Share Posted November 5, 2007 I have only seen a few downgrade offers in my time selling cruises but this seemed strange. When you paid for an upgrade was it from a low category inside? and were they offering you higher category inside? I think we sometimes forget that there are various levels for each type of cabin that cost different amounts - money wise it might have made perfect sense to HAL to offer a 100$ return for the cabin they were offering. Glad you got an upgrade - and hope you enjoyed your cruise! SD
Solo Cruiser Posted November 5, 2007 Author #40 Share Posted November 5, 2007 The upgrade I paid for was from a mid category inside to a fully obstructed ocean view and was more than the $100 they offered me to downgrade back to an inside. I'm highly satisfied with the way things turned out just a little shocked that this offer was even made. And yes, I had a SUPER cruise.
