burghputz Posted November 26, 2007 #1 Share Posted November 26, 2007 Was just wondering iof the Tracfone still works on NCL Ships? I have other phone service, but from what I read, this may be a cheaper alternative.... Thanks:)

Umbarger Posted November 26, 2007 #3 Share Posted November 26, 2007 I took my tracfone on my 10/28 repo on the Dawn. I was only able to use it in New York and in St Thomas. Other times I had no signal. Several times I showed I had a signal on the ship when at sea but it wouldnt put the call through. Good Luck. jingle5616 Posted November 26, 2007 #4 Share Posted November 26, 2007 My tracphone didn't work on the Star in November. The loophole seems to have been closed.....sorry. Jingle
davejohn Posted November 26, 2007 #5 Share Posted November 26, 2007 Mine didn't work on the Gem in October either, no signal. Since we were in the Med, it didn't work anywhere. It didn't work on the Carnival Fascination 2 weeks ago either.
slotaddict Posted November 27, 2007 #6 Share Posted November 27, 2007 Mine worked on the Pearl, southern carribean, I did not try to use it on the islands, I used it only when out to sea. Sometimes when it appeared that the phone was not working I kept it on and it picked up the service. I called my kids everynight. The trip was 10/19/07. 4evrwild Posted November 27, 2007 #7 Share Posted November 27, 2007 I was on the Gem for the 12 night Med cruise RT out of Barcelona. They announced that phones would not likely work in port but once out in the water signals would bounce off the microwaves in space. My Trac Phone worked at sea but the signal was not always really clear. It only cost the price of a few minutes for each of several calls though and was nice to touch base with home. Talk it --- if it doesn't work you aren't out anything but I bet it will work when out in the ocean. Have a great cruise. :)
salty dingo Posted November 27, 2007 #8 Share Posted November 27, 2007 Places your cell phone will work - and if you have a national roaming plan, the calls will be included in your minutes: all US ports San Juan St Thomas When you are within sight of the US Coast (possibly) Be very careful and look at your screen to make sure it shows Sprint (or your carrier) and not "Cellular at Sea" or something weird like that. You could be charged $2.99 a minute if you are not careful.
slotaddict Posted November 29, 2007 #9 Share Posted November 29, 2007 Also when I used the tracfone at sea, there is a slight delay the signal.
clerky96 Posted November 29, 2007 #10 Share Posted November 29, 2007 Ours worked last Feb in the W Caribbean while we were at sea, but not in the ports. Hope it will still work on the S Caribbean cruise that we will be on in Feb 2008. SaltyDingo, tracfone is a pay as you go phone. How could they charge you extra for the minutes? I can see how they could take extra minutes for the usage, but not extra $.
slotaddict Posted November 29, 2007 #11 Share Posted November 29, 2007 I had 140 minutes when I departed and came home with 20 minutes to spare. I used my sprint phone when I was able. I will take the tracfone on my next cruise, thought it was great.
garycarla Posted December 3, 2007 #12 Share Posted December 3, 2007 We took our tracfone in our recent Spirit sailing out of New Orleans. We did make a call. But the next day is was EMERGENCY ONLY. Got home and it works just fine. My guess is they have fixed the loophole and would not count on it for future calls.
slotaddict Posted December 3, 2007 #13 Share Posted December 3, 2007 We took our tracfone in our recent Spirit sailing out of New Orleans. We did make a call. But the next day is was EMERGENCY ONLY. Got home and it works just fine. My guess is they have fixed the loophole and would not count on it for future calls. When I was out to sea, several times the phone said that, I just left it on and the message went away and if it didn;t I turned it off and on a few times and made my calls. I really don;t know what that message is about, but it does go away.
MrsLeo Posted December 3, 2007 #14 Share Posted December 3, 2007 Ours did not work on last week's cruise on the Pearl. It said emergency service only too. I was kind of surprised though while we were anchored offshore at Grand Cayman, I was able to get a wifi signal from one of the hotels and make calls from my skype IP phone, while sitting on our balcony. It worked great and for 2 cents a minute you couldn't beat it.

garycarla Posted December 3, 2007 #16 Share Posted December 3, 2007 re: using Skype to make internet phone calls. That is great. BUT A WARNING to others. Getting a free internet signal while on the ship is a rare event. I try in every port. Even tried to get a pay signal while sitting near an Internet Cafe the other day. no luck. re; what is Tracfone? - it is a prepaid phone. You can do a search here or via Google to learn more about it.
