Ah! I see you're from Sunny Ontario!

- the "Banana Belt" down Sarnia way, by any chance?? :D

nope... just north of Toronto! Speaking of sunny, we had a pretty nice day today with lots of sunshine, (a bit on the cool side though). Looks like the temps will be climbing this week so hopefully we're in for some nice weather moving foward.

Thanks for the best laugh of the day - I have never heard of down Sarnia way referred to as the Banana Belt ;)

We too are from north of Toronto

Thanks as always aplmac for your valuable information.

Aplmac, on a different note we are coming to your lovely island for an 8 night land vacation (us and our two boys - 9 and 5) - the kids love the beach (we liked Accra/Rockley a lot) and we like the idea of renting a house/villa. We want an area that is moderately busy and is close to beach access. Let us know if anything comes to mind and appreciate your advice in advance.

Cheers

I got the 'Banana Belt' bit from Wife's brother

who worked in the Sarnia petrochemicals industry for many years!

He was just down here for 8 weeks, avoiding the worst Canadian winter in some time

(probably saved his life, since the guys in his 70s,now)

and it was during his recent tropical sojourn that he laughed as he told us

how some ppl jokingly refer to Sarnia, at Canada's "Extreme South"

..as its 'banana belt'!!

Whateverrrrrrr..

-----------------------

If you're coming for a week or so

don't wait til Dec. 15th. when Tourist Winter Season officially starts

and when prices double(almost)!

Many ppl aim to come just before that, and leave by Dec. 14th.:)

Honestly...I suggest you start hitting the intenet

and Google in some appropriate keywords

like Barbados, inexpensive accommodation, Rockley..

There are many small hotels and little guest house places along the South Coast

within walking distance of Accra, in the Rockley area generally!

Yellow Pages(generally, all nations) area easily accessible via the Internet.

I'd try them, an look under categories like Hotels, Guest Houses, Accommodation

Beautiful! I think Accra it is. Thanks so much for your reply.

Sounds to me like Accra might be the better choice for you and a 3 yr.old and Grandma.

Crane is maybe 10-15% nicer

but is it worth having to trek 60-70% further distance-wise?

That's for you to decide.

One thing's fer sure: Accra won't disappoint you - nor the 3 yr. old! :)

If you take a cab from just outside the gates... to Accra ,how do you get back to the ship? Are there cabs at the beach area, do you have to call one or do you arrange with the driver to come back for you?

Also what other food choices are near there besides the fast food "Cheffete"?

Do you know of any resorts with a pool that might offer a day pass?

Are there cabs at the beach area! ===> Yes. Buses, too!

do you have to call one or do you arrange with the driver to come back for you? ===> No. Accra is very 'central'.

Do you know of any resorts with a pool that might offer a day pass?

Taxis are right there on the spot

as well as a bus route right along the South Coast Main Road("Hiway 7")

Transport back to the ship should be the least of your problems, at Accra! :)

There's Just Grillin less than 100 yards down the road, but in the same immediate area,

Accra Beach Hotel has a restaurant if you want that sorta thing,

and Champers (also a restaurant) is the yellow bldg. up on the little cliff,

at the Eastern end of the beach (see pic, below)

water was pretty waves were great.... not much for walking on the beach, they are building something ... and it;s blocked off, and the aother side has a restraunt on the hill, but it also was blocked off, so you have no where to wonder off too... would chose somewhere else if i had a chance.... wanted to go to sandy lane... where tiger got married , wish we had stuck to that plan....:)

A boardwalk. When it's finished you will be able to walk along parts of the south coast

which you could not before, because of the rocks.

You can see a tiny bit of the construction in this picture

looking like a collection of upright sticks, near the sea rocks

What type of washroom facilities can we expect at Accra :o ?

Has the construction of the boardwalk been completed (we will be visiting in November)?

Are we missing out by not going to Crane? I really want to go to Crane but my older in-laws are coming with us and they may freak out by the 1 hour drive  so I thought Accra would be a better choice.

Aplmac, a few questions for you....if you were planning on doing some shopping along with relaxing on the beach (more beach than shopping) which would you do first?

Is the shopping in the port area sufficient or is there better shopping elsewhere on the island?

What is the 1 local food item you would say is a "must" to try?

Thanks in advance!

What type of washroom facilities can we expect at Accra ? ===> 'Reasonable' I'm told.

I only ever use the outside shower to rinse, but then I live here..

Showers, changing rooms, toilets.Basic but clean says SunnieBGI

and I trust her coz she's a Mom.;)

Lotsa sun, even if the rest of the island is rainy!

The shopping's okay (but St.Maarten has the deals)...most people opt to beach first

and then buy a lil whatever at the Cruise Terminal on the way back to the ship

if only so you don't have to lug your purchases around whole day! :)

Try the Flying Fish if you come across it.

Tell them to go easy on the pepper sauce, if at all. It's hot..as in..:eek:

As in all the posts I have ready by you on this board you have been very helpful and informative :)

I can't wait to visit your island in November, I'm sure it will be one of the highlights of our cruise!

Thanks again!

About that South Coast Boardwalk project..

We had a change of government here in mid-January

after 14 years of the other guys.

When this happens, public projects like the boardwalk get thrown into disarray

..will it continue...will it not? Who knows?

I think it's stalled for now

(on the back-burner, compared to other more pressing issues)

but my feeling is that it will eventually be finished

but not for your November visit, I don't think..

They had to make a good bit of 'coastline' where none previously existed

to get the boardwalk around rocky points

and at the moment much of the reclamation looks ugly.

My feeling is they must finish it, since it simply can't be left the way it is now

but this ..in the fullness of time.

Do you think the current construction going on will ruin the overall look of the beach area or will we hardly notice?

The boardwalk is only along rocky areas of the coastline

to facilitate access from sandy beach to sandy bay, Accra/Rockley included.

It'll terminate right where you see those little upright stick-things

at the extreme Western end of Rockley Beach

and by the time it's all finished and tidied-up

it'll be a rather pleasant walk along the coastline from Hilton to Accra!

Even during construction it will not affect Accra/Rockley

simply because it'll end ..right where the beach starts!

............

If it's anything like our other boardwalk, completed some 5? years ago

it'll be very nice.

I refer to the boardwalk now running along the Northern edge of our waterfront area in Bridgetown

which is a pleasant enough stroll, ending fairly close to where Bajan Helicopters' operation is located.

They'll take you for a scenic tour you'll never forget!!

MUST and WILL are 2 different things.. ===> indeed!

and if they must or do, how long will it actually take.. ===> That's quite another story!

I chose my words carefully!

My feeling is that what has so far transpired (ugly land reclamation) must be remedied

-it's just too unsightly to be left the way it presently is.

They may not get back to it for a year or two, but it has to be completed.

It's a good idea(despite the Bajan moaners) and it'll be so pleasant once it's all done!

But they can't just leave it all rubble-y the way it is --can they??

Now that the boardwalk is complete, can someone tell me if you are able to walk on it from Accra/Rockley Beach over to Sandy Beach?

Also, we are a family of four. Anyone know how much it would be for all 4 of us ROUNDTRIP by taxi to and from the port to Rockley Beach?

We will be at Accra beach in 2 weeks after we take a tour of the island. Since Aplmac (beautiful pictures and awesome insight) has everyone going to Accra beach, how crowded does it get around noon. We hope to enjoy Aplmac beach, whoops Accra beach:D, and find a nice place under a palm tree to relax. Thanks again to Aplmac, a great ambassador for Barbados.
