Laundry: No self service how do I save some money

Without any self service laundry on Celebrity Constellation, does anyone have tips and advice on what they have done to cut costs from having to use the ships laundry service?

I know we are on vacation, but with our kids the laundry service would be quite pricey. I called Celebrity and they said a pair of underwear cost $1 to wash. I can only imagine what shirts, pants, jeans, etc would cost:eek:.

Here's a list of Celebrity laundry prices: http://www.celebritycruises.com/beforeyourcruise/faq/home.do;jsessionid=0000zyayBZP72PrCn6lT8m01JGI:12hdebebp?faqSubjectName=Ship+and+Stateroom+Details&faqId=566&pagename=faq_answers

We've been really pleased with their laundry service...they do a nice job.

I look at the total package... with the amount spent on cruise/air/excursions, laundry is an incidental expense. And without having on board laundry facilities, I am forced to spend my time in more enjoyable ways...not a bad thing.:)

On every cruise we have been on, there is a laundry special where you can stuff as much laundry in a bag as you can for the price of $20. It is less for Capt Club members. I am not sure if you can do this more than once.

Two things to point out: My whites have never been whiter after being laundered by X. I'm not sure how they did it, but they looked new. Dry cleaning and pressing prices are very reasonable, even less than what I pay for this service in Dallas.

Since the prices are actually cheaper than what I would pay at home, I have my clothes done on the ship through their laundry service when I first get to the ship. Saves being extra careful with packing and everything is nice and neat for the entire cruise.

They do have laundry special just after mid-way point in cruise. They put a bag and list on your bed. Leave it for your Room Steward. it will cost $20.00 (US). If you need extra bags ask the Steward he/she may give you an extra bag.

To save some cash, you can take some laundry detergent and rinse out small items in the sink. There is a clothes line in the shower. On our last cruise I took enough workout clothes for 5 days, but we sailed for 12. Sure, I may have looked like a cheapskate to my cabin steward, but it saved a couple of bucks and also luggage space.

I do use X's laundry or dry cleaning service for pants, shirts, dresses. Again, I pack with the intention of cleaning things so I don't have to carry so much. I've found that their prices are very reasonable for laundering or dry cleaning large items, but do agree that it's ludicrous to spend a buck to clean a pair of socks.

On Celebrity, the bag laundry special for all cruisers is offered on the next to last full day of the cruise and is actually $25. It is called a "why bring home dirty clothes special?". Captain's club members (at least at the select and elite level) receive a coupon book that contains a coupon for doing a bag of laundry for a set price ($20 and $15 respectively) at any time during the cruise.

We often bring our old clothes, socks, under garments and etc. with us on a cruise/escorted tour.

When we can not longer use them we simply throw them away.

Saves a lot of space and weight upon return flights.

Also saves on having to buy new clothes for a cruise/escorted tour as well.

We are in the same boat (so to speak) and are taking our three teen daughters on a 12 night cruise in Europe SOON (next week!). We will take some small bottles of Woolite to touch things up (work out clothes, etc...) and will hang them to dry in the shower, but have come to the conclusion that we will send things to laundry and will spend a couple hundred on that. Our cruise price has dropped so much since December that I'm just using those savings on things we'll need.

I was uptight about it at first but it is only laundry. I won't let a couple hundred bucks ruin my trip.

Try hand washing easy to dry items and either pack another suitcase for bigger things like jeans, etc... and/or send a few things out to launder.

You will have such an awesome trip! A cruise is the perfect family vacation. Have a great time!

On our recent 14 day cruise the bag offer was $30 and was almost at the end of the cruise. It helped us because we added seven days touring in NZ after our cruise. We chose our clothing carefully, dry overnight underwear and shirts cost a little more but will be kept for holidays so will last for years. I would happily use a self serve laundry if one was available, not so much for cost, but I like to look after my own clothes.

That is the right frame of mind! No one likes to 'waste' money, but hey on longer cruises and at the benefit of taking less clothes, onboard laundry is not a bad option. With the airlines now charging for the second bag at $25, we will opt to bring the second bag and have no need for laundry service unless there is an accident like I had on last cruise where I spilled wine on the first night on my pants.

I can't bring myself to do that .... those close are reserved for painting, gardening, etc. ;)

I was going to suggest the same thing, although with a family, that may take more of your time to wash things yourself. I plan to bring a small amount of detergent with me and do my own (and it won't bother me in the least if I look like a cheapskate! ;)).

Our cabin steward must have seen me washing some panties with the bar of soap and told me the dispenser body soap worked better (he'd been told by previous cruisers) since it distributes better, being liquid. I took his word for it and it worked fine. And the little clothes line in the shower is great. With the air going all the time the things dry very quickly. Better than paying $1 a pair!

We did the bag of clothes for $20 on our Summit cruise. You wouldn't believe what my wife could stuff into the bag they gave us by rolling everything. We'll use this service everytime to cut down on the luggage we have to take. You can stuff a ton of stuff in those paper bags;) .

Funny how sister line Azamara is supposed to be more upscaled yet their passengers are raving about the self-serve laundry. There's even a TV in the room. Celebrity passengers can afford to pay to have the ship do it.:)

Conrycol is right. Those little bags hold a lot. We usually get the special for $15, and stuff up to 25 items in the paper laundry bag, including tops, capris, pjs, etc. It's really handy since we always spend several days in port or a nearby city before getting onto the ship. $15 seems reasonably equivalent to whatever it would cost for washing, dryer, detergent, etc.

In 5 cruises, all from 12 to 15 days, on 3 lines during the past couple of years I've done 1 load of wash and that was because I spilled something on my pants and looked around for some other items to throw in to make a load. I've once washed out some undies, microfiber so quick drying. On our upcoming 26 days on Occeania I'll undoubtedly use the laundry though we can drive to and from the port so luggage isn't a problem. On our upcoming B2B on Constellation I'll have to pack more carefully and send some things to the laundry because we expect to stay a while in England, maybe ferry over to the continent, and lugging luggage makes that miserable. Plus we'll have to fly home. But I don't choose a cruise line by whether or not it has self service laundries. Before the first time it never even occurred to me that there might be such a thing on a cruise ship.

You can get little packets of laundry powder or Woolite for your carry-on--I always handwash our bathing suits & some undies & socks--will also use the bag offer on upcoming longer cruises--that's a good deal & I think even better if you have a Cap Club coupon..
