Regarding the Cigar Bar...I was recently on Dawn and the odor of cigarettes and cigars was noticable as I walked past the Cigar Bar. Funny thing was, the door was closed and there was noone in the bar. It reeked of the stale smoke outside of the glass walls. I can imagine how awful the odor must be inside the Cigar Bar.

The casinos have a bar and yes, smoking is allowed in the casino bar. We recently found the Gem casino to be extremely smokey. I would imagine there were folks in the casino bar to have an indoor bar to smoke in and they weren't gambling at all.

I think this is ther reason so many have stressed thieir views about the smoking bar. With all the bars, throughout the ship wouldn't you think they could find another one for smokers? Princess had a couple of smoking bars (at least certain smoking areas at the bar plus the casino, but they did close the casino to smokers one entire afternoon and evening. yes, there were not as many gamblers but, at least the non smokers could gamble without feeling like they were being forced to inhale stale smoke.

Usually the smell of cigarette smoke is noticable when the smoker(s) are next to your balcony. I haven't had any experience smelling smoke from the decks above or below our balcony. I guess it can't be ruled out though. I just don't recall being on a balcony with, lets say, the smoking side of the pool deck above me or let's say, the smoking area of the promonade deck below me.

Another reason I prefer cabins on, immediately above or immediately below the Promenade Deck. It's usually the deck I hang out the most on.

 

It's a shame that some ships don't have lounge chairs on the Promenade Deck. I wish they all do.

 

What's scares me about the design of the new F3 class ships, there doesn't appear to be a Promenade Deck on them.

 

On the promenade deck of the Pearl during the week of May 18 all the smokers were standing near the ashtrays mounted to the walls at various locations around the promenade, so I'm not sure the deck chairs will be that much help to you....

Is the Dawn's Cigar Lounge small.....they have drink service?

 

One thing enjoyable about other Cruise lines is the Large Cigar lounges with TV's ( sports) , plush leather chairs and service. And on many nights, quite lively yet elegant

 

The cigar bar on the Dawn is completely enclosed. There are comfy chairs and yes there is drink service. A server will come in on occasion. But, it's also right next to a bar. So, you can go to the bar and get your drink (DH's fave is cognac) and then go into the cigar bar and enjoy. They also have cigars there for sale.

So, if anyone on the Dawn can't stand the smell, then you might want to avoid the Cigar Bar area (deck 6, mid ship, starboard side, not far from the casino).

There have been many debates here about smoking vs. nonsmoking and all that, but this is the most important factor in all of it - there ARE places to smoke (good for smokers), and they CAN be avoided (good for nonsmokers). When we were on the Dream a couple of years ago, the new smoking policies hadn't come into effect yet, so there were many times I ended up doing things without my husband, who is allergic to smoke. Because of its layout, he also had to go up or down a level to get all the way through the ship since our cabin was on the casino level, but with all the yummy food, he didn't complain about a little extra exercise. :)

 

I'm glad that the new rules allow my husband to be with me if he wants to join me for karaoke or dancing (funny... he still doesn't spend that much time at karaoke... :p ), but I'm still very much alone if I decide to gamble!!! The bottom line is that smoking does not bother him on ships because it is entirely avoidable - and I still get to sneak in a few if I'm having a drink in the evening. In my opinion, the system definitely works. :)

same story with us, though Pat isn't allergic to smoke, it does bother him and like you, i do spend some time in the casion without him. Not because of the smoke, because he really isn't into gambling on ships; me, I am into gambling regardless of where it is....LOL

I like a smoke. If the weather is poor and I cannot go outside to smoke and do not wish to confine myself to my cabin I shall visit the casino.

 

I have no idea how to gamble so I shall enjoy watching others and maybe when I have the idea of how things work I may have ago. Then again I may not.

You would think a balconey overlooking the ocean would be the best place on earth to enjoy fresh air. You would think wrong. On several cruises, smoke from neighbors cigars and cigarettes made the balconey basically unusable from time to time.

 

What is worse is smokers who throw lit cigarettes from their balconey with no concern at all as to where they land. Bet they had towels on several chairs at the pool at the same time.

I can't breathe around smoke and I hate it when I go to the casino and have to put my clothes in the laundry afterwards because they stink of other people's smoke. Carnival's Paradise for several years offered a total non smoking experience. But, it doesn't anymore. Therefore, it's safe to assume it was just as unsuccessful as three NCLA ships sailing from Honolulu.

 

It's not about civil rights! It should be about accommodating of one another. There should be places aboard cruise ships where some people can smoke away from non smokers, and places where they can't smoke at all.

 

If we can't share a cruise ship, how are we going to share the world?

 

Of course I can go somewhere else but why should I have to?

And why should we go somewhere else to smoke? The casino is a designated smoking area.

Would you rather have us smoke in the restaurants, the showroom, the spa, the bars/lounges, or the buffet?

 

Each cruise line has rules in place where smoking is allowed, and where smoking isn't allowed.

Live with it, or change the cruise line you sail on.

It's called freedom of choice...that's why smokers have the right to smoke. Also, smoking and gambling go hand-in-hand, so casinos will not go completely smoke-free...that's about the money.

 

Until all smokers quit smoking (and that will not happen in our lilfetime), the non-smokers will complain and the smokers will smoke.

I smoke; I always pay extra to get a balcony so I can smoke. The smoke goes bye-bye because of the breeze when you are cruising. It blows right out to sea. If someone smells it they must have their nose poked through my balcony divider.:p

 

And, I never throw a butt down...ever! And, I don't hog chairs either. :(

At every single safety drill, on every single ship we've been on, on more than 30 + cruises on multiple lines, they ALWAYS say "Fire is the biggest hazard at sea." They also always say "Do not throw lit cigarettes off the side. They could blow back and land somewhere creating a fire hazard." And I've got to say I've NEVER seen anyone pitch his or her cigarette over the side or off a balcony. Have you? When?

 

I believe Renaissance ships are completely and totally smoke free. I suggest those who want to ban all smoking from NCL consider cruising with Renaissance or (if it exists) another line that totally bans smoking.

 

I'm not a smoker, but I'm married to one, and a very considerate one. If EVER it bothers me, she'll put it out and never smokes in the house or car. Even on NCL she won't smoke in the stateroom but only outside out of consideration for the kids and anyone else with us.

I totally agree, I do have a little concern; that being, the casinos on ships are so small I am not sure smoking and non smoking areas will satisfy the non smokers. As for totally non smoking casinos, I wonder if this is going to hurt the casinos? Maybe there is an answer, lets make the ships bigger with huge casinos like Vegas and we will all be HAPPY!!!!

1) The cigar was on the MSC Lirica in the Med, where smoking is much more accepted and I chalked it up to one of the downsides of being in a foreign country.

 

2) Not once but twice, lit cigarettes landed on our balconey on NCL Sun, stateroom 9070 [so much for the naive theory that smoke goes merrily out to sea; most cruisers are very familiar with the often violent wind currents attendant on a ship in motion]. The first one actually landed on some papers on a table with coffee cups on it.

 

The second time it happened, security came and took the cigarette (no longer lit by then) which had landed on the floor by someone's bare foot. And yes, we had all been exposed to the same lecture about the dangers of throwing lit cigarettes off their balconey (somewhere above deck 9). Some people are just pigs, idiots or both.

Well I started a thread on this a minute ago befroe I found this one - I am still confused - anyone know for sure about the Pearle? There may not be one real answer it seems - Well we are not sailing 'til next May anyway - whatever it is may change by then - I am just hoping you cant smoke on both sides of the pool - on Royal C. last year you could smoke anywhere port side so that eliminated one side of the pool deck for us with 2 asthmatics - I am hoping that NCL limits it to one side at least.on the Pearle..
