Smoking in Cabins

September 7th on the Westerdam was our third HAL cruise in a veranda cabin. Neither my wife nor I are smokers (though I was one 30 years ago), but smoking on the verandas never bothered us. We never noticed smoke in any areas of the ship other than the casino and bars. However, on this cruise there was a cabin 3 or 4 doors down from us in which the smoke was so heavy that it was very noticeable in the hallway at all hours of the day and night. I felt sorry for the people who would be moving into that cabin the next week. I don't see how that smell could be eliminated in the few hours between cruises.

 

Have any of you experienced moving into such a cabin, and if it bothered you, what you did about it?

I've never had a cabin that had the scent of lingering smoke. Or any other odors, for that matter.

If I were to find an offensive odor in my cabin I would first ask the steward to use whatever is customarily used to freshen cabins. If that didn't work, I would ask him to bring an ionizer for the cabin. I expect that would do it.

But, if it didn't, I would increase what I requested. I have read on this board of a cabin's soft goods cleaned, and even replaced when the odor was stubborn. I remember there was even a post that the sofa was exchanged once.

We have never had a problem with any unpleasant aromas in our cabin when we arrived. I'm sure if someone smells smoke in their cabin, it will be taken care of for them.

I dont know what they use to clean and freshen the rooms, but it really works. I am very sensitive to smoke (my DH would say I am a big pain in the neck about it), and I have never, ever, been bothered by lingering smoke odors in a room.

Nope, not a problem. HAL has some sort of amazing smoke smell remover. Too bad it doesn't work for when the sewer smells are in the halls.

Do any of the cruisers make a issue about smokers? Where on the open decks can you smoke?

We had a very bad experience on the Zaandam for our Sunfarer Panama cruise a few years back. When we entered our cabin for the first time, it was saturated with smoke. Our steward said the previous occupants were heavy smokers and he couldn't even stand to be in the cabin to clean it. My husband and I are very tolerant, but this was bad! A call to the front desk brought a white coated officer who brought the air purifier ( which was never turned off the entire 10 days) and explained that at our first stop HMC everything would be washed and the carpet shampooed. This really worked, but the mattress still had a a faint smoke smell.

 

We felt HAL did their best to remedy the situation as the ship was full, and we didn't scream or make demands or threats etc. I did write when we got home as did my ta, and quoted from the "know before you go" about how the rooms are thoroughly cleaned. HAL apologized, thanked us for being understanding, and gave us a three category upgrade letter, with no expiration date...which we are finally using on our Veendam cruise next month.

 

I the past year we have been given major upgrades....one worth $6000 more than what we paid, so I'd say we are even.

In our disembarkation survey on Maasdam earlier this month there was an insert basically asking what our reaction would be to a smoking ban. My wife and I enthusiastically encouraged the ban!

We had the same survey on our recent Maasdam's cruises.

 

 

The questions have been reported here in the past but they were something like: Do we smoke and would we sail HAL if smoking is more restricted than is now the case?

 

YES....... we most definitely would happily sail if HAL puts more limits on where smoking is permitted.

 

I've become intolerant of it and make no secret about it. We are used to smoke free environment in Massachusetts and that is the way we like it.

I don't want to breath someone else's smoke.

In our disembarkation survey on Maasdam earlier this month there was an insert basically asking what our reaction would be to a smoking ban. My wife and I enthusiastically encouraged the ban!

 

We first got one of those surveys this past March on both of our Veendam cruises -- and got it again in May for both Westerdam cruises.

We would love to see the ships go "Smoke Free" -- neither can really tolerate smoke for any length of time. I know that no ship will be completely smoke free -- but it sure would be nice if they could be.

About 3 or 4 years ago when we went to our cabin -- we could smell the smoke from the previous passengers.

We told our concierge about it -- she came and sniffed -- said that it would be taken care of right away. We left to go walk around the ship for awhile. When we returned to the cabin about 1 1/2 hours later -- no more smell of stale smoke.

I sure wish I knew what product they used.

Smoking on the verandah's is the main reason I picked HAL. In the rooms were just gravy but really not needed. We are in the aft section and hope the smoke will drift away from others but are in a smoking section ;) Didn't a cruiseline try a smoke free ship?

Carnival tried a smoke free ship on the west coast and in the caribbean and then changed it back to a normal ship. It lost too much money

We are traveling on the Westerdam in July 09. I am a nonsmoker with allergies but my husband enjoys cigars. Naturally he won't smoke in the cabin or veranda. But is there any place on the ship that cigar smoking is permitted? Some ships have dedicated cigar bars. Thanks in advance.

Carnival's Paradise sailed smoke free for 8 or more years!!!!

 

They didn't change the itinerary.

 

People got bored.

This past spring, my husband and I took a two-week cruise on the Statendam. When we arrived at our cabin, the room was still fresh with the smoke smell from the previous passengers...and the A/C didn't work! Our steward apologized and brought in the ionizer while we were at dinner. The next morning, the person who was head of housekeeping came down and had the whole room scrubbed. Crew members were literally on their hands and knees scrubbing the bathrooms, and cleaning the carpets and walls. They also fixed the A/C. When we arrived at our first port, they removed all the soft goods in the room and replaced everything (except the mattress). We, too, received an insert in our final questionnaire asking if we would still cruise with Holland America if they eliminated smoking in the rooms. You don't have to guess what our answer was! My feeling is that if they do want to continue to allow smoking in the rooms, then they should have certain rooms designated for smokers, just like hotel rooms. We were extremely happy with HAL and will definitely cruise with them again. Karen

Well, that's the legend.....

 

Paradise was unable to book the number of groups and charters that Carnival requires to keep improving their bottom line. They are the bread and butter of the cruise industry....and Carnival especially.

 

In any large group, there will be a certain number of smokers and these groups would not book on this nonsmoking vessel.

 

While the Paradise made money, it was way off expected revenue figures everywhere on the ship; casino's, bars etc. Carnival ships have a long standing occupancy rate of 105% and above. On Paradise, many sailings went off with empty cabins.

 

The simple fact is: there is enough room on most ships for everyone - and their habits. Anyone who is a rabid anti-smoking nut have options on other cruise ships and with other companies where smoking is severely restricted.

 

It always amazes me how those with "deadly allergies" to smoke still book on ships where there are more liberal policies....taking risks with their very lives....and complaining about it all the time.

 

The solution is soooo easy. Take another company.....

If the cleaning method the cabin stewards use is extremely helpful (and successful ... ), I don't see why the ban on smoking should be made in individual accomodations.

 

 

Like the OP mentioned, no trace of any residue.
