Sigma 10-20 mm. superwide zoom lens - how good?

about $550 Canadian if I order the Sigma from B&H.

That's a price difference I'm afraid I can't ignore...

I agree..and that's why this is a popular lens..the price difference is significant

whereas the quality difference is not!

You probably should order it and cash in on that good price

-so be brave and do the deed! :D

Good Morning Everyone!!!

Serial Number: 2222165;)

Scrappytrveller, I hope that you do make the Sigma Purchase. It comes with a lens hood and a case to boot. For the cost of the lens hood that needs to be purchased for the Canon, you are still 'up' for a very nice lens, and I think without question that protection for this lens is a must. The glass from the lens bubbles out and if it gets scratched, it's pretty much over. So with the savings of the lens hood and the purchase of lens protection, the cost savings alone is a compelling practical choice.

And just look at Aplmac's pictures. *sigh*...if I could only have that to look at every day I wake up.

I took advantage of the sale at B&H and ordered the Sigma with the UV filter.

I figured for a $230 difference plus whatever the Canon hood would have cost, this was the sensible choice. :)

I'll have to play tourist in my own town to practice with it before my trip. :D

Thanks for all the advice and the gentle push everybody. I can second guess myself so badly, I had to just click that button and do it!

Okay it's not quite my view out the kitchen window

but I did get up to Bottom Bay on breezy Boxing Day for this one..

BBayPanorama124.jpg

I was very pleased when I opened the Sigma box

to discover a lens hood and a square-ish lens case as well.

The case is really handy, since at any given time it's holding either the Sigma or the 18-105 Nikkor zoom

so that alone is almost worth the money...and the case has a little padded bit/space filler at the bottom.

The 18-105 is too long for the space filler, so I've put the filler aside for now.

OMG Aplmac, what a sight!

Great shot, very, very jealous up here in yucky Montreal.

It's been raining/freezing raining all day here.

I love Monteal (in decent weather!)

I was last there for a brief overnight stay in 1975 (OMG that long ago!)

I first visited your fair city in mid-March of 1969.. snowww!

staying at the big Hotel(Mont Royal?) right across from Ben's Delicatessen!

I was 19 at the time!

Next visit to Montreal (Apr. 1970)I stayed at Hotel Bonaventure

and was quite taken with the amazing underground passages

all the way over to the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, several blocks away!

If you'll email me at pcdoctor (at) caribsurf dot com

I'll send you a few big ones of these Bottom Bay scenes for your computer desktop picture.

They work quite well to keep Northerners warm during Jan, Feb, March..

OK,Finely...that Sigma has been unwrapped now for well over 48 hrs.

and we are yet to see sample pics from you.

Where's that brick wall shot to check for pin-cushioning?

I know!!! I was upgrading my Mac to Leopard on Friday so I could enjoy the cover flow and the darn thing has taken a turn. I am happy my photos are backed-up on an external hard drive, but I am not too sure what I might end up losing, but no snaps with the new lens so far. :(

Mac Doctor appointment tomorrow at 1:20. Hopefully it's just the disc drive and not the hard drive.

I couldn't have paid them to do a better job! :D

Pincushioning is the opposite of barrel distortion.

This is best seen with a subject like a brick wall that has parallel lines.

If a lens suffers from pincushioning, the lines on the sides of the image

will bend inward as they approach the center of the image

and then back out, sort of like an hourglass, but with a smooth curve.

Barrel distortion it the opposite

-where the lines bend outward like the staves of a barrel.

The Sigma doesn't suffer from much of either.

Not exactly the right brick wall for a pin-cushion test

but I thought I'd do it anyway for a laugh :D - I couldn't resist when I saw it all brightly lit..sorry.

It's a decorative wall at the local Earthworks Pottery!

That's a bit of my shadow at bottom left

Doing the happy dance! It was torture waiting to try it though, I had to wait for the condensation to evaporate.

Gotta love B&H, ordered Dec 26th, was at my Canadian door Dec 31st. So cool. :)

So I'll have to go back through this thread and look at that brick wall business that's been talked about. So far, I've just taken a few shots in the house and it all seems perfect. What a difference in a tight space!

Just sent you another email CARE package..btw

Don't bother yourself with the brick wall test...you'd have to be very very unlucky

to have a problem lens at this late stage of production.

Just enjoy it.

Good Morning!

I took the camera on Sunday to the beach...I was going to take some pictures of the NJ Shore, the one without the blue water, the palm trees and the pretty people. ;)

We ended up not finding the Kodak spot, but passed into the city to see the tree on the way home. My photos are there now...all from the car either out the window or through the window.

The camera became a real point and shoot. I set it for 1600 and said lets see what happens!
