kp2Miami Posted October 26, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 26, 2008 I recently read in a Noordam review by Cruise Critic contributor Jana Jones, the following statement; “Shorts, tank tops and swimsuits are not allowed in the Vista Dining Room at any time”. I have been on many cruises and on every one it was acceptable to wear shorts at breakfast in the dining room. In ports, many people are going ashore after breakfast and nobody wants to go back to their cabin to change before going ashore. Question: Are shorts allowed in the dining room for breakfast on the Noordam? And the Pinnacle Grill? (Jana, I did enjoy your article). savannahgirl1 Posted October 27, 2008 #2 Share Posted October 27, 2008 There were lots of folks on our cruise that wore shorts to breakfast, lunch, and even high tea. They were very nice "resort" shorts, not short shorts, torn or anything like that. Swim suits of course is not acceptable in the dining room any time. ;)
jtl513 Posted October 27, 2008 #3 Share Posted October 27, 2008 Shorts are acceptable in the Pinnacle for lunch too. I imagine they're OK for breakfast too, if you're in a Deluxe suite.
kp2Miami Posted October 27, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted October 27, 2008 Tks for the responses. If we’re not having breakfast on the veranda, (Noordam Nov 17-27) look for us in the Pinnacle, savannahgirl; looks like I won’t be wearing my short shorts. And if I did they would make me walk the plank, lol. Ryan

Beebob1 Posted October 27, 2008 #12 Share Posted October 27, 2008 Thanks for clearing up the info on shorts. Which is like most other cruise lines. After all it is vacation :) with times changing and so many lines HAL needs to stay competitive and follow what the guest ask for.

Ryan We have worn shorts in the dining room and Pinnacle Grill for breakfast many, many times. As you said -- many of us have early tours and just do not have the time to run back to the cabin to change before we leave on the tours. Keep in mind that the Pinnacle is open for breakfast only for the PS, SA, SB and SC passengers.
DMorris Posted October 27, 2008 #14 Share Posted October 27, 2008 When we sailed the Zuiderdam in 2006 we went to go to the dining room for lunch and were turned away due to one of our party wearing a spaghetti strap top... does this still hold true today? I have sailed on HAL for years -- never saw onlyone turned away wearing a spaghettie strap top in the dining room at lunch. Not even when we were on the Zuiderdam in 2005. You must have just been unlucky and had a tough old area capatain.
Krazy Kruizers Posted October 27, 2008 #16 Share Posted October 27, 2008 You know -- you just got me thinking -- Would a lady wearing a spaghetti strap evening dress be turned away at dinner???
DMorris Posted October 27, 2008 #17 Share Posted October 27, 2008 You know -- you just got me thinking -- Would a lady wearing a spaghetti strap evening dress be turned away at dinner??? Nope... no they wouldn't. That is why I was puzzled to have them not let our friend in for lunch the one day we decided to try the dining room for lunch. Krazy Kruizers Posted October 27, 2008 #18 Share Posted October 27, 2008 That is really strange. I have seen tons of young ladies wearing those spaghetti strap dresses on formal nights in the dining room on all the ships.
DMorris Posted October 27, 2008 #19 Share Posted October 27, 2008 That is really strange. I have seen tons of young ladies wearing those spaghetti strap dresses on formal nights in the dining room on all the ships. But that is a dress and at dinner. Wonder if lunch is different... since that is where we had the issue? Her shoulders were bare. Not sure what happened and why we were turned away... but we were. Sea King Posted October 27, 2008 #21 Share Posted October 27, 2008 You know -- you just got me thinking -- Would a lady wearing a spaghetti strap evening dress be turned away at dinner??? KK: is there an item on a menu, any menu, that covers that:D next to smoking , nothing gets me angrier than the "dress code" there's nothing .. IMO repeat nothing .. wrong with wearing shorts to the dining room or pinnacle for breakfast .. the problem is when breakfast spills over to dinner and someone decides to "make a statement" when is enough, enough if you wouldn't wear shorts and t-shirts to a 5 star restaurant at home, why would anyone expect to be able to wear those to a 5 star restaurant at a resort (that just happens to be moving on sea) beats me why the "dress code" is anything more than common sense .. then again, common courtesy is a phrase that so many leave at the gangway:eek:

RuthC Posted October 27, 2008 #23 Share Posted October 27, 2008 How about a Bathrobe?? It's been done. Not at dinner, that I know of, but close enough. It was a formal night on the E-dam's first cruises. A "gentleman" ( I use the term loosely) was walking around in the public rooms---one of the lounges---in his bathrobe.
