choosing an airport

I am taking the Mariner from LA for a Mexican Riveria. Which airport in your opinion would be a good choice? Airfare to LAX is high and I thought someone could give me another idea.

Try a search engine like Kayak.com and select "Include nearby airports" block.

Some of the other airports in the LAX area include:

BUR Bob Hope, Burbank

SNA John Wayne

LGB Long Beach

ONT Ontario

and several other smaller airports.

Long Beach is closest at about 6 or 7 miles from the ports and is really great smaller airport. However, there are fewer flights and they can be more expensive (but not always).

 

The other airports are much further away. Ontario is at least 55 miles from Long Beach--through valley and LA traffic--and we would not consider it for a cruise; Burbank is something like 45 miles from Long Beach--through LA traffic; John Wayne is about 25 miles (maybe a little more) from Long Beach; LAX is approximately 20 miles from Long Beach. In comparing costs, you need to consider transportation time and money from each airport.

We used Long Beach last time we sailed out of LA (San Pedro) and really liked it, no crowds at all, like 2 planes on the ground. We did fly in the day before so we had all the time we wanted. Another thing is do you have transfers with the cruise line if so then you have to fly were and when they want. Cost we found to be a little cheaper at Long Beach, just a few dollars when we booked it but it does go up and down.

The closest airport is Long Beach. JetBlue flies to Long Beach. Next closest is LAX. Then SNA (Santa Ana aka John Wayne Airport), Burbank Airport and finally Ontario Airport. However, Ontario Airport is a long ways away (about 60 miles). If you are really disparate you could also look into San Diego (about 100 miles).

As others have said Long Beach is the closest and easiest airport but not many airlines fly there. So, if you can get a flight there that would be great. If not, I would go with LAX.

Once you start thinking about airports other than LAX or LB you should consider the cost of shuttles and transportation which could be quite costly. If possible I would stick with one of these 2

I think airfare to a larger airport, such as LAX, is usually less expensive than most of the smaller airports.
