Drinking the water in Europe?

Recommended Posts

I know in Mexico you need to be careful about what water you drink and food you eat. Is this the same situation in Europe? Is it safe to drink the water or should we stick to bottled water? What about the ice? And food - any worries there? Thanks for your help.

Which country are you talking about? There is not much ice, and I had never had any problems with the food. Some countries are cleaner then USA. Some tap water has many minerals and that may be the reason why you should drink bottle water. But Europe is not Mexico.

Venice, Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Naples, Athens, Marsailles we drank non-bottled water, nobody got sick. In Kusadasi and Istanbul we did only bottled.

If you feel uncomfortable bring a liter bottle and fill up on the ship daily. We did that too, but in resturaunts we usually just took tap water, except as noted.

The water is fine to drink in Europe...this has been brought up a lot.Not any where close to the water in Mexico. If you have any qualms at all in any one place just pick up some bottled water. If ordering in a resto they will charge quite a bit and will ask if gas or no..sparkling or not.Tap is usually just fine if you want water. It's free:)

I live in Switzerland and certainly drink tap water here, and all over Western Europe. I would be careful about drinking the water in ex-Yugoslavia and Turkey though. However I wouldn't go so far as to brush my teeth in bottled water in those countries!!

Generally in Western Europe IF water is not considered drinkable there is a sign on the tap - in France and here it says "Eau non potable". In Italy "Acqua non potabile" in Germany "kein drinkwasser" and so on...otherwise assume the water is absolutely fine!
