Do we hafta share?

Our wine, that is, with the rest of the table.

I'm not saying we won't share -- I was just wondering if there's some kind of established etiquette. If a party of two orders a bottle of wine while seated at a table for 10, what happens?

I don't think you "have to" share. Especially if you don't know the others at your table. We usually have offered and usually throughout the week, our tablemates have reciprocated. The more people at your table, the more difficult it becomes. We did not share last year when we bought a more expensive bottle for our anniversary.

I say do whatever you feel comfortable doing. Don't feel pressured to share. But don't hesitate to offer if you'd like, either.

At our table for eight, two couples took turns sharing with each other and we were offered, but we bought our own when we wanted some and did not share. The cool part was when one of the officers sat at our table(twice) and they bought wine for everyone!! Then I said "what? No desert wine??" so they bought that too!! We sat with a couple (Princess ..anytime dining)..along with a third couple. The three couples did not know each other. A couple ordered their wine and never offered to share.

Probably if they had offered, we would have declined, just to be polite.

I could certainly see how it might be an uncomfortable situation for someone.

But, think of it this way....if you ordered the wine by the glass, you would certainly not be obligated to buy a glass for everyone at the table....right?

You brought up a good question, though. I am sure that many have thought of this scenario.

The first night we usually only order a bottle for the two of us, but if we have an amenable table we usually take turns ordering the wine and sharing. There are almost always several bottles to choose from each night and it is fun to do a little tasting.

It's your bottle of wine since you paid for it so you should not feel guilty drinking it all yourselves without offering it to anyone else. If you came accross your tablemates in the Internet cafe I doubt they would let you go on-line while the session was being charged to their account. As someone said, it you ordered wine by the glass no one would expect you to buy a round for the table.

I think I may have made a big etiquette mistake when I ordered the glass of wine and asked for 8 straws.

We do not drink but I thought it might be nice to do something for everyone at he table on the last night.

Seriously we don't drink but the others at the table were taking turns buying the wine. If I remember correctly one of the guys said we may as well get a bottle as two glasses are not much less?

Hi it really does depend on your table...
I was so lucky had Phil, Marti, Ken and Lisa and Virginia for tablemates. Virginia is not a wine drinker...but on the last night she purchased a bottle for us...how nice is that .
The other nights, the 2 couples and I alternated...plus...there were 2 evenings that we had complimentary bottles sent to us 4 Free bottles! We had met 2 "Big Wigs" from corporate on the ship and I guess they took a liking towards the 6 of us! Bought us drinks in the Rondeveau one evening as well

Lois, you are such a lush!!!! LOL

Our last table for 10 was a LOT of fun, but we were the only winos (I mean wine coniseurs) sp? there so we ordered our own bottle each night & they all had hard liquor drinks or iced tea.

We always offered some to everyone but they always declined.

My DH and I almost always order wine for dinner on our cruises. We have always offered to share and it has almost always been reciprocated. Guess we have been lucky in our table mates (well, except for the time we were assigned a to table for 4 and the other couple was vehement about the fact that liquor was evil and it was going to kill us, blah, blah. They wouldn't change the subject when we politely tried to ask them about their kids or anything else and then proceeded to try to convert us. We moved the next night to a great group of like-mided souses).

Rosie, if you DO plan a 2005 cruise, we probably need to warn them we are coming and to stock up on a few things...hic...

Linda..love that glass......

I forgot to tell you, you know how small the Martini Bar is on the Mercury? Its a lovely area but it is kind of small...well, I missed it but I heard one evening the poor bartender (Martin)ran out of glasses .
And there was ONE Irate passenger...who let Martin have it .
I wasn't there at the time but it wasn't the bartenders fault...and I guess there will always be one rude customer..no matter where you go...
