Cabin selection on the Gem

My husband returns from a business trip tonight and we plan to book our anniversary cruise on the Gem, a 2010 cruise sailing the Med, Turkey and the Greek islands.

 

I have a question about room location. I do suffer slightly from sea sickness although I did quite well on the Navigator last week with some rough seas. I had to wear my bracelets only a couple of evenings. We were in an OV on deck two though which is low in the ship.

 

On the Gem, we want to get a balcony since its only the two of us and its a special occasion. Deck 8 appears to be the lowest deck but it is above a very public area and I am concerned about noise. Deck 9 looks great. The only rooms available on the site are 9592-6 and 9052-4. There is a blank area across the way and I am wondering if we would have to worry about noise there. Could there be other rooms available that are not online? I am concerned about going to deck 10 due to seasickness..although maybe one deck wouldn't make a huge difference. My guess is I would be fine but I am a wee bit paranoid. Are the seas rough in the Med or Adriatic? We are planning to sail in September.

We were in an aft balcony on deck 10, the very back of the ship, and it was fine.We hardly felt any movement. The bow, front of the ship, is the worst for motion. As long as you are midship or towards the rear you will be fine.

We were directly below the outdoor cafe and we heard no noise. The med cruise was wonderful, you will love it. The worst part was the long flight back home. Have a great time!!!

The Med is like any sea...it CAN be rough.....but I've sailed it for 19 days, without so much as a whitecap. Nightcaps.... many.....

 

The pendulum effect isn't as pronounced High vs Low, due to the use of stabilizers to minimize side-to-side movement.

 

If you are relatively mid-ship, to avoid the up / down sensation, you should be fine.

i've cruised 2 times on the gem , the first time i was in cabin balcony #9080 on the Bahamas/florida cruise in march 2008, and the 2nd time i was in cabin balcony #10072 on the Southern Caribbean cruise in January 2009, both rooms were on port side .. mid ship... and we had great sailing, hardly felt anything.... the worst was for some reason whenever i was in the casino,...besides the terrible smoke stink, i really felt the rocking.... and i wasn't even drinking... have a great cruise...enjoy yourself...:D

Is there a side of the ship that would be better? I was thinking the port side would be better but I suppose it really doesn't matter.

It's possible that the blank space across from 9052-4 could be the passenger laundry facilities. They were midship on the starboard interior around that area, so that could be it. However, the machinery is very quiet, so you won't hear that. What you might hear is the door opening/closing all the time, particularly if it's a long cruise and people don't want to bring X days' worth of clothes with them.

 

Just a thought.

That's easy....do you want to look at land, or water?

 

just figure out.... if you leave from Istanbul, you'll be heading west. Land will be on the Starboard side (well... the mainland.) (it's also Starboard to see the Blue Mosque, and the Haigha Sofia....which look great from the Bosphorus.

 

Port side will be looking over water, and you may have the first glimpse of the Islands, depending on how they approach....

 

But my vote would be to see the Blue Mosque as you sail past....it just looks IMMENSE. Have a look at my WebShots below, I have tonnes 'o pics there.

Its only a 7 day cruise so probably not too bad.

 

And unfortunately, this itinerary does not go to Istanbul. I wish it did but we would like to spend a few days in Venice and can't leave the kids with Grandma for too long. :)

Looking at the deck plans for deck 10 aft - there are two BA cabins between the AE's that have larger, deeper than normal balconies. They're hard to come by, but from what I understand, are worth it.

NCL recently closed all its passenger laundry rooms, so there will be no door closings and no noise from them!

REALLY??? I guess they wanted to capitalize on laundry revenue. Sigh. Who can really carry 13 (or more) days of laundry and not use their rather expensive laundry service? Oh well.

You are pretty much out to sea and far from land lots of the time, so hard to say if port of startboard is better. For motion, center and low is good, with center being way more important than deck.

 

Rare that anyone complains about noise UNDER them other than disco. Blank spaces can be all kinds of things from smokestacks, to crew space, to storage to just about anything. Not to worry.

I think we will go with one of the midship cabins on deck 9 or 10. After sailing on the Navigator, the aft areas seemed to move more. Thanks for all your help. Too bad about the laundry..I actually was rather happy to think we could walk across the hall and do laundry!

Which, if I remember correctly, has gone up as well. It was $20 in November. I'm not trying to be snarky, just comparing how things can change in the span of 5 months. (Has it only been 5 months??!?!?!?!?)

Right..it used to be $20 in the not-too-distant past. So, they've hit us up twice, once by closing the self service laundries and then rubbed salt in the wound by raising the price of the laundry special (or maybe it was done in the other order...doesn't matter...same result).

Okay, just put a hold on a mid-ship balcony cabin, port side, deck 10!! We will finalize tonight most likely and pay the deposit. Thanks again for all your help. I decided to change the seasickness and go up but can't quite bring myself to do the aft cabins yet. :)
