Where to Stay in Los Angeles

We are doing a Panama Canal Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale cruise and plan to fly into LAX the day before. Where should we spend the night? We heard that some motels have a free shuttle to the dock. Which do and are they any good?

I believe that some folks from this board have stayed at the Crowne Plaza in San Pedro. Very close to the pier and they have a free shuttle.

In general I'm not much of a Priceline person but in this case if you put in 4* and San Pedro you will either get the Doubletree or the Crowne Plaza. Both have shuttles and both are nice. (If you want more recommendations try the "West Coast Departures" board.)

We stayed at the Crown Plaza a few years back and they do have a shuttle to the pier. Hotel is pretty close to the pier. The Doubletree also had a shuttle. Neither is close to a lot of night life or other activities to do. We went to Long Beach late afternoon early evening where there was more to do. Neither hotel has transportation to or from the airports so you'll have to arrange it on your own.

Just last night we used priceline for a 3 1/2 star hotel in zone 3 San Pedro and bid $65. We got the Crowne Plaza which seems to be the norm recently. The other 3 1/2 star hotel is the Double Tree Inn and everyone who has stayed there is happy with it, too. Both have shuttles to the pier.

We stay in Long Beach, lots of entertainment/hotels/restaurants. :)

Only a 10-15 minute ride from San Pedro.

I agree. We stay in LB as well and the hotel will shuttle us to the pier for free. Lots to see and do if only to walk around the area (don't forget the Queen Mary).

Super shuttle http://www.supershuttle.com/ from LAX to Long Beach. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtown_Long_Beach,_Long_Beach,_California Check in to one of the hotels on or near Ocean Blvd. Take a very short walk down to the wonderful Aquariaum of the Pacific http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/. Eat at any of the yuppie restaurants on the beach near the aquariaum. Take a cab in the morning from your hotel for a short hop to the cruise terminal in San Pedro.

We have stayed at both the Double Tree and the Crowne Plaza. Both are good hotels, although we have a preference for the DTI because of its location. Both offer free shuttle to the World Cruise Center and anywhere else within a 5 mile radius of the hotel.

Here are my usual couple of notes...

If you are just flying in late afternoon or evening before a cruise, stay in San Pedro at either the Crowne Plaza or Doubletree...

Long Beach has more to do--if you have a little more time--but you have more logistics to deal with getting to the pier and what's the point if you are only there overnight?

All you really need is a hotel room and a shuttle and at least one decent restaurant for the night before...Pedro has that...

The Doubletree is down by the Marina...down the channel from where the ships dock...you're on the water, so views are a little more tranquil, less urban...but you are a little farther removed from restaurant choices and from the pier...but it makes little difference--just use their shuttle...

Crowne Plaza is in "Downtown" San Pedro (what there is of it) it's close to the pier, you, theoretically could walk, but, with luggage, you take their shuttle...The CP is very close to a lot of restaurant choices...several are virtually right across the street or down the block from the hotel...San Pedro Brewing Company and Papadakis, for example are within a few hundred yards...If you are on the right side of the hotel, you may get a nice view of your ship at the dock...

Both hotels are very nice (a lot of others in San Pedro are not so nice)...

Not far away or a quick shuttle from either hotel are some waterfront restaurants...like Acapulco or 22nd Street Landing or the various eateries at Ports o' Call Village...also near the CP are several other restaurants often noted on this board...If there's a particular type of restaurant you want...or price range...or style...just ask...

No harbor are hotels offer free shuttles from any of the area airports...Call SuperShuttle or PrimeTime shuttle or take a taxi for that trip...San Pedro hotels like the Doubletree and Crowne Plaza do have the free shuttle to the pier...inquire as to the logistics when you arrive...You may find that, with ships wih 3,000 or so passengers getting on with you, many of them may be staying at one of these hotels with you...they will have to coordinate shuttling a lot of people and luggage to the ship...

Good luck...
