Yay! There are some *DEFINITE* improvements there, especially in the meritage reds and the addition of the Chapoutier Rhone.

The Pinot Noir/Burgundy selection remains poor. *sigh* Additionally, would it be so hard to board a decent Tavel or other industrial-strength bone-dry Rose?

Thank you so much for posting this!

After picking myself up off the floor, I think there's a typo in the list. I'm pretty sure that's Chateau Bel Air, rather than Chateau Belair. If it *is* Chateau Belair at that price, I'm buying every bottle fleetwide and taking up permanent residence. One is a retails-around-$16 totally drinkable Bordeaux, the other is a Premier Grand Cru Classe going for closer to $75. ;0)

It's a common mistake - so common that Belair is now known as Belair-Monange.

The Modavi private selection cabernet normally retails around $10 a bottle. Thus, $27, is almost three times the retail price. Great profit margin for Princess, but typical of many restaurants. Bringing a bottle of this onboard and paying corkage is not worth it. If I were to pay corkage I would buy expensive bottles at retail off the ship.

I see Opus 1 listed at $169. Not bad considering it was available at Sam's Club over Christmas for $155. Princess must have some deal with Opus as everyone else is always looking for $250 - $350 for a bottle.

Thanks for the list, but someone posted 'reasonable prices.' Your kidding, for instance take the Rosemount Chardonnay, an Aussie Wine, listed at US$29. Here in OZ you can buy it at the liquor shop for AU$12 that is US$9 !! BIG mark up.

Loved the comment 'Did'nt see the boxed wine listed.' We take a couple of 2 litre casks of good OZ wine @ AU$12 each, for medicinal purposes. But still buy a bottle of wine for dinner.

That was me. :) And I'm only semi-joking. Since Princess says one bottle per passenger CAN a passenger bring a box instead? I certainly wouldn't haul it to the dining room, but a glass or 2 in my room in the evening would be nice.

Hi NSWP;

I do not know about markups in Au., but in the states, a 200-300% markup in the cost of wine in a nice restruant is normal. Yes, we can also buy Rosemount varities in the supermarket for around $9-10 US, but we are not in the supermarket, we are in a nice restruant;-)

BTW, we love some of the Au. wines and drink them often at home. We also take a box onboard for inroom consumption.

If you compare the Princess price list with other major cruise lines operating out of the US, you will see why we say Princess is very reasonable!

G'Day Mate!

Dave

Hey Dave,

In the jewelery business I believe a 300% markup is referred to as "Keystone". Quite normal.

At least the lower priced wines on Princess are drinkable. When I was on Royal this spring the lower priced wines were marked up 400-500% and were undrinkable, the kind that you can buy a 1.5 liter bottle for $6 in your local grocery or wine store.
