Scoops free???

I remember 3 years ago being on the Crown and going to Scoops

to get a bowl of Ice Cream. I believe it cost $3 for Ben & Jerrys.

Let me tell you, they piled what must have equaled close to an

entire pint of ice cream into that bowel, covered with whip cream

and sauce. It was the most satisfying $3 bowl of ice cream I have

ever had.

A) Cruise lines do charge for specialty restaurants (and you called this the "specialty ice cream bar").

B) As you noted, it isn't the "junk" available on other lines and I want it to continue to be better than the others.

C) With the "free" experiment on the CB, guests are reporting long lines and limited availability at Scoops.

For all of these reasons, I'd still prefer Princess to keep the minimal charge at Scoops. This is not logic suggesting a charge for all meals, but acceptance that some optional items having a charge benefits those who choose to enjoy them.

Just because it's free does not automatically mean the quality will decrease and that it will become "junk." I have sailed on two different Celebrity ships (Infinity and Galaxy) that offered free soft serve and hard ice cream (and have done so for quite a few years), and the quality was VERY good.

From what I understand, the free soft serve was pioneered on the Caribbean Princess and is being rolled out fleetwide. All ships should have it by mid-June! :) Oh, and I believe that the ice cream card will be discontinued...

I totally agree! Holland America serves ice cream free throughout the day and evening (soft serve and scooped ice cream). The ice cream on HAL is excellent! I'm surprised that Princess charges for ice cream anyway. It should be available in the buffet as part of the dessert menu for lunch and dinner, not just between 3:30 -4:30 p.m. The lines during this hour must be awful.

Maybe Princess did a market survey showing free ice-cream leads to brain freeze, prompting passengers to purchase more alcohol, pics and casino credit:D. Though I was allowed to take wine "freebie" I had one of highest bar tab ever. I do not believe in the generosity of Corporate America or corporate anything. If they are giving something for free, they have a plan to make you pay. It's a question of when and how much.

Like the specialty restaurant, a charge for premium ice cream would work for ice-cream lovers. Regular ice-cream should be provided, lobster but no ice-cream except for an hour in HC!

Just a thought

Never encountered any long lines! In fact, most people didn't even know about it:D

Waited 10 minutes numerous times last month on the Coral for the free ice cream between 3:30 and 4:30 PM at the back of the Horizon Food Court. There were three Princess people back there, but only one was was scooping. The others were handing us the bowls, helping us with the toppings or running to get things as they ran out. Not the most efficient operation. But hey, it was free and very good!

Just read on another thread that Scoops is now offering vanilla and chocolate (with sprinkles) free of charge!!! Anyone else run into this? ( I think it was on the Caribbean Princess).

I will add my 2 cents worth. We were also on the CB repo cruise last week and the soft serve ice cream WAS FREE at Scoops. We also got a strange look when we offered our cruise card after being served. This was a surprise to us as it hasn't been free in the past cruises on the CB or the Ruby in March. Again it WAS FREE on the CB last week at Scoops!!!

INTERESTING. . .as I posted on the main board, we had ordered the ice cream card as a gift for some friends of ours on their upcoming cruise. We recieved a call yesterday from princess asking us if we would like to choose something else. . .as of June 1st ice cream is free fleet wide.:D

Just got off the Caribbean Princess on Tuesday, June 2nd. and yes they are offering free ice cream at scoops everyday. It was okay, not creamy at all and they were very small portions but it did hit the spot!

We just got off the Star yesterday and there is only free small soft serve ice cream cones in the Scoops area. The Scoops sign is gone as well as the menu that used to be there. No sign saying the cones are free, but many people must have found out quickly the day we boarded. The lines were long and they must have been pumping out free cones constantly that day.

This was one busy area last week because it was so hot in Alaska.

I have never had ice cream from Scoops. Was the quality the same as it used to be or did they cut back on that?

Most of the charge for ice cream bars had real ice cream at some point, at least on the Emerald/Ruby they did. Especially for the shakes and smoothie type drinks.
