Anybody actually like to cruise in August?

We have been on 3 cruises so far, all in August. We are planning another cruise for Aug 2010. I have heard many people say they would never cruise that time of year, due to hurricanes, or too many kids on board.

Granted we do have 3 kids, and that is why August has been our first choice. We pick the end of August, normally the week before Labor day to get the cheapest pricing for the summer. Yes, the port visits are VERY HOT in the Caribbean in August;). BUT..it just feels right to cruise in August.

We are looking forward to when the kids are older and we can cruise off season.:p

We've done many of our cruises during the July/August period by choice and haven't had any problems with huge numbers of kids or the weather. Yeah, it's hot,but coming form the Central Valley, hot we can do. We don't even pick that time because of lower rates. For a long time, it was my only down period at the theater, so we just got into the habit. August is fine by us.

I could cruise anytime of the year but since I am a teacher we have done the week after Easter and either June or July of the last 3 years. We originally were going to go on a cruise in about 2 weeks but we found a better deal at the beginning of July. If you need company we will go.

There is not a bad time of the year to cruise.:)

I like Alaska (or Canada) in the summer...going in 29 days, hurrah!

I like the warmer ports in the winter because the area that I live in is in the 100's F in the summer.

When DS was a wee lad the summer cruises were fun for him because there were other kids to play with. Now that we are on our own packs of other kids don't bother me because they usually aren't in the casino and piano bar and I'm usually not in the Kids areas.

We usually cruise in August - the week before Labor Day - we rent our house out for a 10 day horse show so we have to leave town. We have had a few changes due to hurricanes (check my sig), but it's all good :D. I know all I really paid for was to be on that ship for 7 days - where we go is up to Mother Nature! As long as I do not have to cook and clean and there is someone to bring me my margartias I'm just fine!

We've been to the Caribbean in August awhile back but I don't ever remember anything about hurricanes (I thought those were more prominent around the September/October timeframe). Either way, if you're getting a great deal, go for it! We have also been to Alaska during the month of August and as another poster mentioned, it's a great month to travel to Alaska as whether is usually pretty nice (not as cold).

I've only cruised in August. I'm a teacher too so the only times I can really get away for more than a few days (well, we get a week at Christmas) is in the summer. The prices are good in August too! I've not had to deal with hurricane weather- though shortly after we came back was when Costa Maya was hit. :(

We've only done one August cruise, and that was to Bermuda and the Bahamas out of NYC. Lots of kids on board which would have been fine except that many ran rampant without supervision and paid no attention to DH who was using a walker.

For that reason I wouldn't go again in August except to Alaska or Northern Europe.

My first cruise was in August, from New York to Bermuda, in the early 80's. It was such an unpleasant experience that I didn't cruise again for twenty years.

I learned several lessons on that trip. It was a "reward" trip that my friend's aunt, a travel agent, had earned by selling many cruises on that particular line. She couldn't go, so we did.

Lesson #1: Don't sail on the cheapest ship on the ocean ... because pretty much everyone else on it are there because it was the most they could afford. Not to be too much of a snob, but one of the women at our table had to be told by the staff that just because her sweat band matched her sweat pants, that didn't qualify as "formal" attire. (Okay, it was the 80's and Jane Fonda's workout was hot, but still.) This woman was a New York City school teacher, so she wasn't uneducated, just not very worldly.

Lesson #2: Don't sail in the summer (although I did it again this year, so I guess I didn't learn the lesson well enough). There were about 50 recent high school graduates on this cruise, which was a graduation gift for them. I don't recall seeing any parents around, I guess at 18 they could cruise alone in those days? It was the first and only time in my life I'd ever seen women wearing high heels with bathing suits (other than beauty pageants). I grew up outside of New York, but I learned a lot from those young Brooklyn girls. It was "educational", but not a vacation experience I'd like to revisit.

Lesson #3: Free isn't all it's cracked up to be.

We usually cruise in Feb./March to break up the winter and get away from the cold/snow. We have also cruised in July/August and have enjoyed ourselves. Loved Bermuda in August. We just love to cruise.

We were on a Med. cruise in late August 2007; very hot but not humid, not overly crowded either. Doing the same thing this year on the Brilliance of the Sea from Barcelona leaving August 26th.

Love the Caribbean in winter because the water is too cool for us in Florida from Dec-March whereas it is great on the islands.

We always loved sailing the Caribbean in summer but HAL no longer has any ships there from mid April until mid October. They leave that area a full six months of the year so we have sailed in Europe and now Canada/New England in the summer months....usually at least August if not also June.

We only sail HAL.

We've cruised in July, August and September. Also cruised in January, February and March. I'm willing to cruise anytime I can. I would love to go Europe or Alaska in August, but DH's business if really busy in the summer.

I don't see any reason not to cruise in August. If there is a storm, they will just reroute the ship...no big deal there. If you thing August is hot in the Caribbean, try New York City, or Charlotte, NC.

I live in FL, and we're used to the heat and humidty, so the Caribbean breezes are a nice change actually.

I have cruised april, may, july , august and september. I have never had any weather related issues. As for kids there are more kids in april during school vacation than there ever was on our august cruise.

As others have said any cruise is better than no cruise at all....;)

We love to cruise in August - it's a great family vacation that is the perfect end of summer . . . then back to school for the kiddies in Sept.

Yes, that is how I look at it. I hate the end of summer, so having a cruise the week before school starts it like one last fun thing :)

We kind of like to do late August because by then I am sick of the heat & humidity. It's the same as January - I want to get out of the cold. I find that if I do both of those, it's the best of both worlds. (Sounds like I'm a snow-bird and sun-bird cruiser!!:D)
